"You can't always can" - Ben Mariott
Great tutorial yet again!
Small question: Did you use 12.5 as a framerate on the Posterize Time effect because you animated in 25 fps or is there a different reason?
Haha, thank you so much! Yes. That's exactly why. 25 is the standard here in Australia. You could set it to 12 and it really wouldn't make a difference. If we used 24, the math would certainly feel a lot nicer to use.
Okay, thanks for the reply!
I know Im randomly asking but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Theodore Alex Instablaster ;)
@Achilles Marcos Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
"Sometimes you can't always can." Very true words for the professional design process at times.
I am honestly obsessed with your intro! 😍
Great Tutorials!
Your tutorials are so helpful. Seeing your workflow in this full project tutorial is incredibly helpful. I will be watching and re-watching this. Thanks!
Great video Ben - love watching you work, I’ve also learned so much
Love your tutorials man! As a motion designer just starting out I love to see your process and pick up new tricks in every video!
Thanks so much man! That's awesome to read. I'm trying to make videos that I would have loved when I was starting out. Please hit me up if you have any suggestions. :D
So many little touches really make the look. I think these full project tutorials are super helpful even more so than the effect spotlights which I also think are great.
Thanks so much! That's really awesome to hear. I'm definitely planning on doing more of this type in the future and mixing it up a bit. :D
your tutorials are so helpful, please don't stop!!!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the encouragement :D
Thanks again for the insight into your process!
You are freaking amazing! thanks for this channel! looking forward to your future classes!
You make the best after effects tutorials!
too good to be missed. Love every second of it
Thanks so much!! :D

OMG i learned here far more than a 3 session of after effect class! thank you
You are amazing Ben!!!!!
Thank you, Cynthia :)
Great tutorials. Really nicely presented too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks so much!! :D I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching :)
Omg it's amazing! Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I'm curious where can I find this kind of character illustrations?
entertaining tutorial to watch :D good job Ben.
Thanks so much for watching :D Glad you enjoyed it :D
thank you ben
You just got an immediate subscriber I need more of these
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed them :D
Thank god I found this. Thank you so much
Amazing tutorial. Thanks Ben! :)
Glad you liked it! :)
love your videos
First, so glad I found your channel. Seriously great work producing informative and brilliantly conceived and executed videos. I learn so much every time I watch your videos and this includes during my often repeat viewings. Second, in trying to form my question, I may have discovered you already answered it in this excellent video. I will ask it anyway because I can be a bit obtuse about visualizing how parameters in effects should be set to mimic real world observations. Here, I am referring to the Wave Warp effect applied to Snow’s hair strands. It seems with the wind blowing the strands from left to right from the viewer’s POV that the crests and troughs of the wind-driven hair strands should travel left to right visually as well. The question it seems you already answered in the video: How to reverse the direction of the waves and it’s right there in the Direction parameter of the Wave Warp effect. Am I mis-interpreting how the wind should make the hair-strands wave?
okay, so this is my first time in your channel and I just have to pause and applaud you for that AWESOME intro sequence. Probably the best intro sequence for a CZcams video I have seen lately :D kudos!
Thank you so so much! :D That's so awesome of you to say. I had a lot of fun designing that intro
@@BenMarriott you have a really outstanding style. Thank you so much for these tuts, as an aspiring motion designer this is a huge help :)
You have such a unique style
Hilarious and informative, great stuff
where the hell have you been, i have been looking tutorials who teach us production quality, well i am glad i have found you out now.
Thanks so much :D Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Ben... Your videos are really informative...
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you find it helpful :)
You are amazing!! ❤️
Thank you so much :)
amazing work
Thank youuuuuu! :D
Love it so much many thanx
Thank youuuu!
Really nice and great techniques. The wave effect on the hair - might be blowing in the opposite direction?
I love the simulation music.
Haha, thank youuu!
Wow amazing Love your videos
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it :D
Hello! Amazing tutorial. Which tutorial is the one about the animated gradients with Adobe Photoshop? I can't find it. Thanks
awesome !!
Thank you! :D
With this style of illustration, i would draw everything directly in after effects with shape layers. At first shape layers seemed complicated, but once you figure out how they work, a big time-saver. I draw in a similar style and I never opened illustrator again ;)
in my personal opinion the hair is waving from right to left while it should be the opposite way to look natural.. is there a way to reverse the wave orientation? and great tutorial i loved it!!
+1 Subscribed. Very Nice! Keep up the good Work.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. :D
Hey Ben, I loved this tutorial. I'd love for you to create some more tutorials for non-illustrator motion designers if that makes sense (us who make idents, branding related stuff, social media content etc). Like the 'Ben Marriott' part at the end of your intro for example! hope that makes sense :)
Thanks so much! yes, makes complete sense :) I've got a texture tutorial coming our tomorrow that should have lots of applications. I've used them in all kinds of projects. I am definitely going to tackle that last scene in my intro soon. Thanks so much for the suggestion.
@@BenMarriott Amazing, thanks for hearing me out! :D
Nice stuff!
Thanks so much! glad you dug it :D
hello thanks for the Tips , I have a question
can I add the grain texture to someting rotate like arm movement and that kind of stuff .I never use set matte effect before.
With the falling snowflakes you could separate dimensions> key frame Y > wiggle X
Thanks so much! That is a great idea. :O
@@BenMarriott Glad to share knowledge. One step further is you can animate the anchor point X> wiggle Y and then just use the positioning for it's location start. That way you don't have to adjusting keyframes every time you move the snowflake.
Man is great! I'm slappin' my forehead thinkin' why didn't I think of that. haha
BTW. I switched the X and Y in my last comment. Doof!
Anyways... keep making content. I love learning new stuff. Thanks.
Thanks so much for the encouragement! :D I really appreciate it
Sorry, I am new to the animation scene. I recently started making sprites with photoshop to use in unity, can you tell me if after effect can also be used to make sprites? If so I think that it can make my work a lot faster since I can had some effects without needing to draw every single frame by hand. Thanks for your help.
wow
can you do a video about best export settings? my animations always look choppy even at 30fps
I need help. I followed your tutorial, but when I got to 10:43 and applied matte to the pre-composed layer with textures and set the matte to the layer I want to apply it to, it did not work. (The layer is also continuously rasterized as it should be) What can be an issue there? I tried to google it but did not find an answer.
It is still possible to get similar result by copying the layer and setting the TrkMat, but I end up having a lot of unnecessary layers.
Set matte worked at 3:29 for the glass reflection for me
Thanks for the tutorial!
Is that a program that displays the key strokes? Or is that edited in?
B/c my online classes need that.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!
111
Thanks so much! :D Glad you enjoyed it
Ben, how did you shy frames On timeline? Lost only sec point
Would you generally recommend doing character animations in After Effects? I feel like most studios these days only use Animate for it, but it's so much more time consuming that way...
By the way, this animation reminds me so much of Robin Velghe's animations and illustrations, which I find super dope, so thank you! Very informative and helpful.
I would definitely recommend after effects for something similar to this. Animate is great for frame by frame stuff, but replicating this animation would take much, muuuuuch longer.
I'm a huge fan of Velghe's work! I know as soon as I had those glasses on it looked a lot like his characters and tried to keep it far enough away so it didn't come across as biting his style.
@@BenMarriott Nah it still screams Ben, don't worry about it. Guess it's the sunglasses indeed
Great to hear! The glasses and lips combination are the main offenders. I had a little checklist as well trying to push it further away. No stroke, no warm colours, no sparkles, I was starting to get paranoid haha :)
@@BenMarriott So I mentioned the one thing you were afraid of. Fuck lol my bad
Haha, no problem! I can't run from the truth :D
Hei, how you can make wave warp to be loop?
cool
Thanks so much for watching :)
what to do if animated illustrator layers first then changed the size in the illustrator but it made a mess of my animation..the postion of the layers changed and animation is collapsed any solution for this
Hey Ben, have you tried "Ray Dynamic texture" ? It'll save you a lot of time for texturing!!
I have! It's a super useful tool. I'm trying to keep the tutorials plug-in free for the most part, so everyone can follow along. :) I'm waiting for the perfect project to really sink my teeth into it though :D
@@BenMarriott Gotcha! You're killing it with the tutorials man, keep it up and all the best! :D
Inspiring tutorial, although I'd wish I could speed up some processes in real life.Where can I find the Light textures?
Thanks so much! I've got a "looping textures" tutorial that explains how to create them :)
@@BenMarriott Oh cool,guess I will subscribe then.Interesting channel!
quick question ik the the vid is 5 yrs ago but can u upload the file without any animations so i can give it a try myself
So cute! This guy looks like Post Malone to me though, hahahaha. xx
Hi. Just watched a tut about echo effect. Can this work on the snowflakes?
Oooo, That's a great idea. I think you could. :D
Hello Ben, the project file isnt accessible anymore
i think the wave direction on the hair strands should be reversed... it appears waves are coming inwards.. great tutorial and style though!
Please make a tutorial for your cool intro 🙏🏾
imagine all the work from a single kurzgesagt video
I thought it was Post Malone.. .-.
Awesome stuff Ben.. I saw your Insta stories that you were freelancing for Buck... how was it?
Thanks so much! Freelancing at Buck is great I'm still there now and my booking got extended a little longer :) It's been amazing working with so many talented folk. They really give the artists time and space to do their best work which is so refreshing. They really understand how much time a good product takes to craft.
@@BenMarriott Awesome dude, would personally wanna work for a studio like that. Let's hope your tutorials get me there :D
Haha, I'll do my very best :D
I laughed way to much at that goodbye fade
Haha, thanks man! :D
how many times could you like a video?
Haha, never too many. Thank you so much! :)
The hair is waving from the wrong direction, isn't it? Seems to start waving from the end of the hair rather than from the base of the hair
It should be animating from the base of the hair, maybe the frame-rate makes it hard to tell. That can be easily adjusted in the wave warp effect "Pin left edge"

2:28 i think node are better 🙄😁
The link was blocked Ben.
I thought it was Ryan McGee from Supermega
Pls vietsub
great video but the music is terrible it makes me want to die
