This is the last song the lead singer (Wong Ga Kui) created in Yr. 1993. After the album release, he passed away in an accident, he fell off the high stage during performance. We lost our legend.
Name of the song “Boundless Oceans Vast Skies”
    Translated lyric:
The night is bitter cold, the snow is flurrying
My heart is freezing, my mind is wandering
Rushing through the storm, uncertainty surrounded by mists
Between the sky and ocean, will we change in this boundlessness
    - No one can escape the changes
How many times have I faced ignorance and humiliation
Never have I given up my dreams and determination
In a moment of distraction, a feeling of abstraction
The love in my heart has faded without realization
    - Can anyone understand?
Forgive my passion for freedom, and the untamed heart
Even someday I am also frightened, I could fall hard
Everyone has a choice to betray their believes
Even someday I have nothing but you, I wouldn’t be scared
I will always be the free spirit and proud,
I will forever sing my songs out loud,
I will nonstop walk across thousands of miles.

    海阔天空
Today I see snow flying by in the cold night.
Drifting far away with a cooling heart
    chasing in wind and rain
without a trace in the mist
boundless sky, but will you and me
    change (who is not changing)
how many times have I faced ignorance and mock
never given up the hope in my mind
    a sudden trance
the feeling of owning and lost
    has gone weak unconsciously
the love in my heart (who understands me)
forgive my life's unruly indulgence and love for freedom
I too am afraid of tripping one day
anyone can turn backs on dreams
but even if one day, there's only you and me
    but still free and selfish
    forever singing my song aloud
    walking for a thousand miles.

The background for the creation of this song is probably that in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hong Kong, China, mostly popular some very simple pop love songs. Most of the band's songs are inspirational and realistic songs, so the lead singer released Hong Kong in 1992. After saying that there is no music, only the entertainment industry, he left Hong Kong and took his band to Japan to develop. The song you listened to was composed in Japan in 1993 to express their disappointment with the Hong Kong music industry and their confusion when developing in Japan. This song was released 20 days after the lead singer died unexpectedly at the age of 31 on June 30, 1993 on his most hated entertainment show. There are also many Chinese people who think that if he is still alive, he will create a bigger legend. Thank you for reading my favorite song. This song has accompanied me through a long time.

Hi Lao zhangren, it’s fun watching your video. The way you were commenting so seriously is a bit funny because I know you don’t know the background history of the band and you commented in the viewpoint of a producer👍👍👍I can tell you a little about their story: the left hand top corner wrote 懐念家駒(in memory of Ka Kui) the making of this video is in the memory of this great popular singer in HK. He died in an accident in a live concert when he was young. So most of the video is a mix of their original MV of the song and the car things showed how popular they are. So I suggest you asked more what is all about and why he loved this song. It should be very interesting.
I have watched several videos of you and your son-in-law. I just admired you have such a good family and all your sons-in-laws are very good guy to me. I just wondered whether it is by luck or what. But after watching this, I think I get the answer. Your songs and this beyond band has one similarity that the lyrics has deep messages about life (so easy resonance, right). You always like to inspire others and look in other person’s eyes, so your son and daughters can really get your love and pass them away. That’s why I am really touched by watching the videos.
The next point I suggest you communicate more with your son in law Jay why he loved those songs and I think it will be quite interesting.
Anyway, great to meet you here.

This Band is legend in Hong Kong.. is sad that Wong Ka Kui ( leader of the band) pass away early due to stage accident. This song and another song called Cold rainy night ( czcams.com/video/06SlImznTUU/video.html ) are awesome...

Hi Dan, thanks for sharing the video. This song “Vast Ocean, Open Skies” (my translation 😂) talks about the hardships met in chasing dreams (music), which many of us could relate to. Sadly, the lead singer died from an accident during a concert in Japan. Do check out the lyrics, and also other songs from Beyond like “光辉岁月” (loosely translated as bright brilliant age moon) a song written dedicated to Nelson Mendela.

I'm fascinated how much Cantonese pop from 1980s-2000s has influenced chinese youths (now adults) who grew up during that period, even though many don't speak Cantonese.

    Very professional review!
In fact, this MV is a commemorative version for their lead vocalist, who died in an accident at a game show. He was very talented but unfortunately died at the age of 31. Even though the story behind is sad, the songs from his band are very motivating and emotional.

Hey uncle , for Chinese songs , lyrics are critically important. All the meanings ,emotions , the poem-like rhythm comes from lyrics. So ,Please let jay find the english lyrics for you to preview before you listen to a song that he recommended . Otherwise you can't get the spirit of those songs.

老丈人,I hope you choose to have English subtitles every time you look for Chinese music videos. With English subtitles, you can substitute music better. Of course, music has no borders, and it can resonate even if you don't understand the lyrics. Thank you.

Beyond is one of the most famous bands in China. All the songs are sung in Cantonese not Mandarin. Cantonese is the dialect of Guangdong and Hongkong, but has nine different tones while Mandarin only has four tones.
Here comes another famous song from Beyond with English lyrics czcams.com/video/5hzl3uWOKWU/video.html

I think my Jay spoke a different dialect or language when he grew up, and then he learned mandarin when he went to school at 5 years old or so. I don't really understand what language he spoke before mandarin.

My top 3 memories of visiting Hong Kong were 1. i had to duck in the hallway of my hotel to not hit my head on the light fixtures. 2. i saw super expensive Lamborgini type cars parked at McDonalds. 3. I sat in a music business meeting with 12 men who were wearing suits and ties. I felt very underdressed. i wished i was given a heads up, i would have worn a suit and tie.
