Episode 16: Why Pennsylvania is a Great Place To Go Boondocking

- This video explains why Pennsylvania has the best boondocking on the east coast. There are over 2 million acres of state forest land in the Commonwealth. Booking a free dispersed campsite in one of these state forests is easy to do on the DCNR website. [see UPDATE below--it's not free anymore]. Furthermore, access to the 121 state parks in PA is completely free, whether you are a resident or not. In this video, I will show you five of my favorite boondocking sites in PA and tell you what areas to explore in the vicinity of each location.
UPDATE: Beginning Nov. 3, 2022, the PA DCNR is changing its policies and will now charge $10 to camp plus a $6.50 registration fee. If you object to this new policy, as I do, please write to them at:

A simple letter explaining why free camping is important to you should suffice. Get involved! Let's build a campaign to reverse this unreasonable policy. Our tax dollars already should be paying for free access and camping on public lands! Forcing people to pay makes access to these natural resources a two-tiered system only available to those who can afford it. America deserves better.
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing 🎯
Glad it was helpful!
The fishing is really good at Ohiopyle too.

I’m from NW PA also - Bradford to be precise! Wonderful place to have grown up!
Loved your poem! I just found your channel and subscribed. I am 56, and have thought over 2 years about living t his way, all year around. I love Pennsylvania, also my home state.
Thanks for the comment and subscription. Check out some of my other episodes. I recommend you rent a van and try it out for a week or so first. The. If you like it, go all in. We are summer only vanlifers and still have our house too.
Free is now $10 per night and Reserve America
Yes, I mentioned that in my updated comments below the video and in another YT (episode 41) that I linked to. If you are as mad about this as I am please write to DCNR. The address is in the comments section of Episode 41.

As a native of Pennsylvania, I had no idea that dispersed camping was available. I now live in Idaho, where there are lots of dispersed campsites on National Forest and BLM land. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching. I too thought it was a best kept secret. Now that my video has 5000 views not so much anymore.
Yeah, unfortunately Free camping in PA is no longer available as of Nov 2022 . Cost is $10 plus processing fee of $6.50. still not a bad deal.
Not anymore new rules say you can only camp were they let you in designated sites and you must pay for the sites
Does anyone know if you can go camp at these places during the off season when you cant make a reservation?
What site # was your pick in Tuscarora? Ricketts Glen is my favorite also.
God, I can’t remember that far back
we have a 5th wheel. Would it be inadvisable to unhitch and explore area attractions and leave the 5th wheel at the these locations? Thx for great informational video. Nicely done. Subscribed.
As long as you have your permit posted, this should not be a problem at all.
@@thisvantasticlife thanks. I was thinking maybe vandalism might happen way more than at a state park for some reason?
@@carolm8003 I have never felt threatened in any way in any of the state forests. Campsites are dispersed and remote from each other, so not many people would just happen to stumble upon your site. Probably safer than in your typical neighborhood.
@@thisvantasticlife good to know! Figured it wasn’t really an option to unhook and go sight seeing. Thanks for sharing
Hello, you spring chicken! LOL. I heard they started charging for all sites in the State Forests now. True? I'm out West but planning on being back soon.
This is true. Video was made before they charged. I’m actually afraid the popularity of my video was the reason.
@@thisvantasticlife i doubt it. Probably just the usual of people trashing and vanlifers getting the blame. Sometimes it IS the vanlifers but more often it’s locals. 😥
It's pronounced like Kinzoo. Drop the A
Thanks. I did not know that.
You were circling your cursor around the dark green areas, those are all state forests, the national forest is just to the west in light green.
Thanks Jeff. Still new to making these kinds of vids. I appreciate you watching. Happy travels!
I understand! Keep up the good work!
how often can you rebook the same place?
Rules vary depending on the forest district but in general you can stay at a site for 7 consecutive days but no more. There is nothing in the regulations about number of times you can rebook. just have to move spots after 7 days.
What's the location/# of the campsite near the creek in Tuscarora? It's beautiful!
Thanks for the great video, this is really informative and helpful.
