This film was ground breaking for its time. The zero gravity was accomplished using the Boeing KC-135 nicknamed the 'Vomit Comet’ to shoot all those scenes inside the capsule. The best part of this 4K release is the audio commentary with Jim and Marilyn Lovell. Nice to see they included his Cameo shots in the postcards included in the film Vault set! I gotta say when I saw that massive tear in your copy my heart sank…I’m so sorry that happened Kieth. I didn’t realize how rare this edition was at 3500, I really hope you get a replacement Kieth. I totally agree that it would have been nice to get some original artwork on the cover, but at least there was plenty included within the set. Hopefully next year they get those pesky crystals figured out. Again, top notch Video Kieth! Cheers!
Hey Chadwick. I have to admit it's great to see Apollo 13 getting this kind of treatment and I never thought the day would ever come. It is getting very frustrating when it comes to the crystal and hopefully next year they can sort this issue out. Like I said in the video it's a very simple problem to fix and it should have happened by now. Breaks my heart that I have to return it and fingers crossed the replacement will be okay. You just don't know unfortunately. When it comes to the edition itself it felt like a real tribute and it's probably what I found most impressive with the release. Ron Howard is an underrated director, i just love Rush and the Davinci Code. I even love Cowboys and Aliens.

Hey Michael. I heard that near dark is getting a 4K release. I'm almost certain it was Second sight. Maybe I dreamt it or I'm just hoping but I do remember hearing something about it
I've seen that French Mediabook and I was about to pull the trigger on it but then I heard about the rumor of the 4K release and I opted against it. I still might pick it up though. Depending on how long it will take for the 4K release to come out
@FUKAOKEVERSE that is actually a valid point and I might actually consider getting it now. Mind you if second sight are doing it you would imagine they will put everything they can into it when it comes to special features. But God knows when it will come

Beautiful release Keith. You made me re-check my two of this batch again. My Jaws has minor crease but couldn't return it anyway so I'll just about accept it. My Shawshank was actually perfect. You were very unlucky with that damage, looks quite severe.
Most of my Editions are fine but this is definitely the worst I've seen and I've already sent it back and my replacement will be here on Thursday. A huge fingers crossed on this one Steve that everything will be okay. It's a ridiculous problem to have but a problem nonetheless

That a shame you have to return your copy. I love this film ....I seen it at cinema when it first came out and have owned it in vhs, dvd (couple of times), blu ray and now in 4k (just standard release). The picture and sound on the 4k are fantastic. Hopefully you get a replacement.
It breaks my heart that I have to return this. I have been anticipating this release for so long and the last thing I ever wanted to do was return it. I can deal with a crease but not a tear. It costs far too much to ignore it. It really is a great movie and it's nice to see it get this kind of treatment. I never had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. That's such a shame Keith, what's the matter with Film Vault, they send out these premium editions and they are damaged. It's so frustrating. As you know I watched this last month when I had my Tom Hanks marathon and really enjoyed it and like you said it has a phenomenal cast. I really like Gary Sinise in this.
It's getting very frustrating at this point Gary. Like I said in the video it's a very easy fix but they don't seem interest in doing so. What I want from the Film Vault range is something that doesn't have a Universal or WB special treatment yet. I don't like to double dip with movies I'm not totally in love with. So movies like Apollo 13 are perfect. Exorcist just got a Boxset release and a steelbook. So I would pass on that one (I don't need to have all the Film Vaults).Agree with the franchises. It is possible as long if the movie holds up for itself and it doesn't depend on sequels.
My god Robert I'm already 50 hours into starfield and I haven't even scratched the surface of that game. Just like yourself I am absolutely addicted and I honestly think I'm gonna be playing it this time next year. I mentioned the Exorcist in this video but I absolutely do not want it. Like you said there is a box set coming out which I have pre-ordered and I'll be more than happy with that. The only reason why I mentioned it is because it sold so well and You Know the Way Warner Brothers are when it comes to 4K releases.
@@millerman9991 true true about the Exorcist. Hard to think of a release fhey would do next. We just need to let them surprise us! Glad that we are in the same rabbit hole. I'm keeping myself busy for hours now with a side storyline that I'm helping the Freestar Rangers as a Deputy and discovering a big complot. Also 54 hours in the game now. Don't have any idea how much main story I have left. I'm currently at level 23 and waisted 3 hours of my evening with editing and rebuilding my ship 😂😂
@reprobert I still haven't gotten into the whole ship building aspect of it yet and I definitely haven't gotten through much of the storyline. It's a testament to how much you can do. My only issue and it's a big issue I noticed I've been going into the same buildings quite regularly and not only that but all the items inside the buildings are in the exact same positions. But other than that I think it's a masterpiece.

Got mine with the inside damaged from the plaque as well but I'm in the states so the video store I got it from would take it back but no guarantee I'd get a replacement as it's sold out.
Thankfully my replacement is on the way and I should have it on Thursday. Having said that you just don't know what's going to happen with the replacement copy. I don't think it will be as bad as this one. Well I hope it isn't. I'll know soon enough

I seriously doubt come on it Michael. But I really do hope they address that issue sometime next year. Ron Howard is such an underrated director and he has directed some amazing movies. Hi Keith great review as always. I unfortunately have the same issue but I have managed to repair it myself it’s ok but not as it should be. I will keep my copy but after 8 releases isn’t it time film vault changed the design and maybe go with a numbered type plaque or sticker within the box instead of the heavy glass/ crystal. Disappointed for the cost of each film. Thanks again keith.

Like I said in the video this is a very simple fix but they don't seem to be bothered and they really should be because as you know there are very expensive and the last thing you want is any kind of damage. I think you're right maybe change it to a plaque. At least then you know nothing will happen. Unfortunately there was too much damage on this release for myself so it's definitely going back. I passed on all 4 from this series. I had gotten all 4 of the last and was planning on continuing on getting, but I really did not like the art on any of these 4. Compared to the last set, these are awful. But that is just me.
But the main thing is main thing is like you mention, the tear or creases where the crystal is. I gave them a pass on the 1st series and maybe they were not aware of that flawed design on it but it became very well known and I remember them saying they would address and fix for future releases.
Well, here we are and all I hear is the same thing. Same problem. They did NOT address and now can't give them a pass. Nope. And is such an easy fix. These are way too expensive for that.
So done with them. I might consider selling the first series now? Not sure. Debating.
Me personally I had absolutely no problems when it comes to the artwork of any of the four. I actually think they rival the previous ones. As a matter of fact I think 2001 has the best artwork out of the lot. The crystal is getting very frustrating at this point and surely they're going to have to address it next year. There are losing buyers like yourselves and that's the last thing they want to see happen. Unfortunately I will have to return this and fingers crossed everything will be okay with the next one. Yeah Christopher Nolan would be great and I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see some of his movies. Interstellar could be a very nice release. Hopefully we will find out soon enough

This film should lend itself perfectly to 4k because it was shot on film not digital. Grain should be filmic and blacks of space should be deep and detail filled when there is shadow - instead it looks milky. Look at the opening with Lovell driving his Stingray (I think it's a stingray) the car should look pin sharp and have a lot of specular details but it looks flat. It's the worst looking uhd I own in terms of what it could look like and what it delivers. I think it looks processed and not a fresh scan - at least it looks so. Perhaps I need to spin it again on default settings on the panasonic player but I had to do too much dicking with tv brightness where I usually dont.
Wow I thought it looked beautifully filmic. There's definitely no processing going on. Other than a few compression problems I had no issues with the 4K transfer. If that's your worst looking I'd love to see what your best looking is
