South Africa's Cameron Van Der Burgh sets a new world record of 58.46 as he wins the gold medal in the men's 100m breaststroke event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (29 July).
Australia's Christian Spenger and the USA's Brendan Hansen won the silver and bronze medals at the event held in the aquatics centre.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

So many of them did 3 butterfly kicks at the start. Great observation skills by the officials...
thats not illegal
Sam Wright Yes it is
Josh Mairose sorry I was thinking about backstroke
Sam Wright lol, were you not aware that you were watching a breaststroke race?
ironjohn03 no shit😂😂😂 jk I had a brainfart
4 years later, Peaty arrives
And literally crashes the world records. 1.5sec faster. Unbelievable
@@denkatapaldi yeah. He is the king 🔥
@@denkatapaldi no he doesnt lol wdym. let the man celebrate his win.
@@denkatapaldi well not everyone takes adventage of it, thats all.
You know every one cheated in that final and he even said it himself " would you train 4 years and let the guy next to you win because he cheated and you didn't so he cheated as well." So that final was fair game.
they all hide those dolphin kicks on the start, ive been disqualified so many times for trying that lol
Just 1 dolphin kick is now allowed but in this case some of them had to be disqualified
Michael Cobb yeah! There’s no dolphin kick in a split stroke
@@h34thg0w3r a what stroke?
What is a dolphin kick?
@@markgwapo2918 A kick in which the legs move up and down together, with the knees bent on the upswing.
I may now sneak in a few extra kicks.
It is supposed to have only one dolphin kick at start and turn in this event, isn't it ????
Yeah
Hello
Yep
No, u guys are wrong. I am a professional at swimming and trains 12 times a week and ur allowed to kick first, then a keyhole pull then one kick while doing the pull

For something as official as the youtube channel Olympics, it's kinda strange to see "wold" record
Their youtube channel is official, sure. But there are just so many errors
Sam Corbin Six months later, still "wold"

Kosuke Kitajima he had been a FINALIST of Olympics for 4 times. i proud of that he is Japanese hero!
Pay attention to how many dolphin kicks he does
3 but it is only 1
The guy right next to him did a little butterfly kick too. Van Der Burgh tried to cover up his butterfly kicks with the splash off the dive. He also is boarder line butterfly kicking at the end of each of his breast kicks when he takes a stroke.
Jacky Tang did u watch that video too?
he got stripped of his medal
He isn't doing butterfly kicks end of his each breaststroke, I am doing breaststroke for 12 years and everyone sees my and many people's kick like that. It's just what you see but he isn't really doing any butterfly kicks on purpose.
Watching this 2 years after the event and I'm still getting excited and proud of this great SA moment. :-)
Well he kind of cheated and he admitted to it
Joshua Nguyen kind of??
3:32 Van Der Burgh obviously took 3 illegal dolphin kicks, and Scozzoli took one as well. This should not be a world record. Both Scozzoli and Van Den Burgh should have been disqualified.
According to FINA, breaststrokes swimmers can only perform one dolphin kick only during the long breaststroke after every turn and takeoff. But you're right, they both did another movement when hit the water. In my opinion, judges considered those as part of the dive in phase ...
The fina officials can't legally disqualify them because they have to be 100% sure they saw it.
Everybody only found out later about the dolphin kicks by watching the footage.
Sarthak Dhingra true, but the dolphin kicks were still illegal. He is lucky that according to the rules now he cannot be disqualified, because he should be.
You'd think that the officials would watch a replay of the race afterwards and make sure that no one cheated, it is the Olympics after all... Unless they do and Burgh had them on payroll, which is total you know what.
Connor Miclette officials cannot make decisions after reviewing video. It needs to be when it happens.
yeah not 1 kick but 3 kicks
+Man Jam Yeah that's what I saw from the start...
Cameron James right his legs were straightening then bending 3 times
I almost guarantee that you're wrong. Kitajima is from Japan, a country of honor. He would never stoop to such a low level as these other few breaststrokers have. And no, he did not intentionally do that butterfly kick back in Athens 2004. Kitajima's style is beautiful and flows, the kick was a natural part to that style during the pullout. He has perfected that pullout and would never change it now.

Lifeguards: can you hop off the line
love that he has paid his respects to Alexander Dale Owen now by having a commemorative olympic medal made and presented it to the Dale Owen family. True class
I'm glad Adam peaty broke the unfair world record... by over half a second!
By over a second and a half*
Jackson Kaye Two and a half if you include the relay (56:54)
+Jackson Kaye it was at the time I commented... ( same person just new account) it was at the same pool same lane actually
I've got a question what did the person who won the race do?
Antonio Smith-Plata relays don't count
Hansen beat Kitajima... finally.
Manuel Gutierrez haha 😂👌🏻
I wonder if they get distracted by all those cameras on the bottom of the pool
I wonder the same exact thing sometimes...
dingwon No. I mean i dont know if you swim competitively if you do and if you are anything like me when i race there is nothing that can distract me.
dingwon Focus
You don't think at all to get distracted
@@IcoN377 I've heard Megan Quann/jendrick say that it did in fact distract her, especially the first time and I don't think she's the only one. You practice with nothing on the bottom of the pool, if something is there that's different they'll notice.
"DOUBLE Dolphin kick"when he plunge into the water(3:31-3:35),That's why he lead a half body when all swimmers lift heads. You can recheck it with slow-motion speeds(5:08-5:11). No one doubt his ability level ,but it's really not a FAIR play.
everyone else did it
The thing I hate about breaststroke in the Olympics is they hide the extra kicks in the bubbles.
Brendan Hansen. When I saw his name, I didn't expect anything other than his beautiful stroke. But when I saw his name at the 3rd place, yeah... good effort. He is still my model to learn breaststroke.
Christian Sprenger is the best of these
Hansen must feel good for stealing the bronze from Kitajima. They've been long rivals!
Can't believe I did not notice those extra kicks till now
The way they pronounce Kitajima is cringeworthy.
KEE TAJ EE MAHHH
Alexander Dale Oen was a legend, so sad he died 😥😥
Grinds my gears that this WR stands when he clearly cheats.
Adam Peaty recently broke it at British Champs. It is a blazing 57.97!
I saw SwimSwam tweeted that! Unreal race.
I wanted Kitajima to take the gold medal.
he did cheat though
Is this for real? So many butterfly kicks underwater, this cant be a WR
Looks rather pedestrian after Mr Peaty's exploits in the very same pool tonight
Records are made to be broken. Peaty's record will not stand forever.
Actually, I'm not so sure about the "not before your hands separate" rule; when I watched the breastsroke races at London and Barcelona, as far as I can remember, I did not once see someone follow that part.
The dolphin kick part is true though, and to be fair, almost everyone in that race should've been DQed. I saw 3 (very fast) fly kicks from everyone you could see from the underwater cam.
He actually did four kicks three underwater and one before he comes up
Van Der Burgh did many fly kicks as he entered the water
That title typo
Also who's watching in 2016
everyone does 1 kick in the beginning and he does 3? wow talk about cheating
Christian Guzek eh, Im not sure about that... looked like one on the dive, and a regular pull out...
AwesomeratFilms It looked like he did two small kicks as he entered the water, and a while later he did another one as he did the pull out.
+Christian Guzek He didnt do three other wise he would have been DQed !
@@andreamcgrath3317 he did he even admitted to cheating
Kai Hutto he didn’t admit it but he did cheat lol
The guy next to him did 2... cameron did 3, and it hard to tell for the rest. Cameron what cameron said about this was right, a lot of people do it.
All you experts picking on VDB but they all done multiple kicks. This was reviewed at a later stage and it was proven. They all do it!
Gyurta’s closing speed is INSANE
4:49 Spenger in lane 6 looking real happy
yes rightly so. he wasn't expected to medal
5:08 Van der Burgh did Dolphins kicks
Thx for he recommendation Tim :)!!!!!!!!!!!
@Irondirtboy your aloud to do a dolphin kick once you enter the water, but after you straighten out its illegal so it was fine
YEAH Cameron WON taking the GOLD home
I love how they show us that they are cheating
He is cheating on the very first kick.
+Kats Cats scozzoli
+Kats Cats So is Scozzoli. I hate these guys who do this.
sure
It is so normal i do it same
aaaaand peaty comes in, with legal dolphin kicks, and with a new WR
I like that they don't catch this in the olympics, but if i was swimming at a YMCA dual meet i would definitely be DQed.
Peaty smashes everyone and doesn’t need to cheat 🐐
Really great butterfly race😊
He is the teacher of Glee!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank man!!!!!!!!!!!!
bro this is the olympics. these people are olympians for a reason, they know what theyre doing
Adam peaty New world record holder with a time of 57.92 at the British swimming championships
Peaty can achieve that time in his sleep 😂
Adam peaty vs Cameron van der burgh should be two great races at worlds this year.
I'm afraid not Adam kicked his ass
+random channel 101 They were good races but really sad when Peaty won!
How ironic is it that Vanderburgh beat Peaty at their most recent race?

The way the lady says "van de burgh" PLEASE-
When you know people out there who swim breaststroke faster than you can freestyle 😂😂
Yeah South Africa!
Fabio Scozzoli is life 👉👈💞☺
Btw. Scozzoli also does those rapid dolphin kicks with Van der Burgh.
did anyone see that Cameron van der burgh did so many illegal fly kicks of the dive?
Then The Springoks beat England again in the Rugby world cup final to win it for th 3rd time .
Cameron such a lucky guy. 4 years ago there was Kitajima, 4 years later Adam peaty appears. Now Oen died.
Van dear burgs cheated because he took three dolphin kicks
3:35 "Rick Astley?"
After 11year , he did 3 Dolphin kicks
A kid in Northern California [where i live] set a new national highschool record at mid :53
South Africa❤
Cameron Van Der Burgh looks a Good Guy.
but he cheated
FINA really shouldn't have allowed dolphin kicks in the first place. It causes controversy like this.
No, this is unrelated to the dolphin kick used in the pullout. Allowing that single dolphin kick was sensible due to the natural body movement when pulling the arms after the dive - though people are misusing the rule and doing it before the arms, which maybe shouldn't be allowed. These kicks are a part of the dive as such, and obviously practiced - which makes it calculated and cheating (though I'm sure we agree on that part).
I think they should allow one before the pull and one during, but for now just do 1
To think that Cameron Van Der Burgh used to go to my school👏🏽
van der burgh best breastroker ever
technically he didnt... which is why his victory and record stand
i don't know how he could smile after doing that...
Most of the people in this heat did a couple butterfly kicks as they entered
Rip Alexander dale oen.
It will be fun seeing Adam peaty vs van der burgh
+17sunnyhour peaty just broke the world record, get fucked
And today, 2 swimmers swam under 58's in series
All those dolphin kicks in the pullout... Lmfao
Christian sprenger..love
4:50 guy in the yellow cap.hilarious
He was suppose to be the gold medalist that event
Cameron Van Der Burgh: breaks the world record
adam peaty: im about to destroy the's mans whole career
Rickard has a beautiful stroke
college pools record of 53 should be for 100 yards only (91.44% of original)
In my opinion, I don't think van der Burgh did it on purpose. One of the techniques used by some swimmers is to do a fly kick on the surface of the water on the dive (which is legal). Sometimes this results in an involuntary continuation of movement in your legs, which can result in what you saw at 3:31.
Not saying he shouldn't have been DQed, just trying to explain a possible cause. My respect for South African sportsmen continues knowing van der Burgh admitted to the extra kicks.
Cheaters are automatically pathetic. Respect to all the swimmers who actually had integrity 👍🏼
Now, Cameron, has COVID-19 😭💔
4:52 "get rekt m8?"
Even Hansen took extra dolphin kicks
The first and second one do 3~4 dolphin kicks at start...
If you see at 5:08 ,really everybody does it, but maybe not that obvious. Also Sprenger does it who claims that Van der Burgh did it. If Sprenger would have broken the world record it would have been the same except that Van der Burgh wouldn't accuse Sprenger of doing it because he's an honest man and also told everybody that he did that extra dolphin kick...
and yeah, 4 years later, THE DEATH OF HIS DOMINANCE and adam peaty's dominance arrives
Only lanes 4 and 5 cheated.
all of them did if u go to 5:07
@@kaihutto34 You can't see lanes 1 and 2. Gyurta never did more than 1 dolphine kick. Just sayin'. : )
I have been disqualified for doing one and van der burg not doing 3 kicjs in the Olympics. Im thinking of taking greej judges in the Olympics
You must of did 2 by accident, 1 is legal, unless you did it in the wrong spot(I am a breaststroke.)
No thy said that i did it earlier but my coach didnt see it
i have 11 years from Egypt
i like peaty and Cameron van der Burgh and michael phelps
idk but last year another guy swam 1.06 at the Belgium junior championships. He was also 14 and he is called Robbe De Coster
(50m pool, not a 25)
lots of comments about the kicks off the dive. Doesn't really help that much, there's so much air around the legs at that point that you don't get any propulsion out of it, and it really only increases drag.
I think the point was really that they intentionally tried to get extra propulsion in their underwater by cheating, but I do somewhat agree with you that it wouldn't help much.
yes,you have right ! :) but van der burgh in the final kick 4 times :D and everyone see that
