      On top of that; The story was a big letdown coming off of the previous entry, they cut out WAY too much, it may as well have pulled a DB RB2 and not had one at all.
      Meanwhile; DBFZ has a roster of 40+ and pretty much everyone has their own moveset. Even the multiple Goku's have plenty of tools to call their own. And sure maybe the story wasn't that good but at least it was new and not recycled the manga for the 50 millionth time. Quake 1 came out a day earlier than Mario 64 and yet Mario 64 steals the limelight for the grandfather of 3D gaming. Descent 2 also had a head start. Super Mario 64 had soooo many refinements with gameplay that benefited all 3rd person 3D games, while Quake was more of a technology showcase on top of (mostly) existing FPS gameplay. And I agree that Descent was very underrated, but the 6DOF shooter genre just didn't take off.
      When people talk about games, it's usually less about under-the-hood technology like Doom's BSP rendering engine, Quake's precalculated lights, and its ability to run on a 486. Instead, it's more talk about things that are immediately fun / noticeable, like the analog stick, Mario's movement, etc.
      IMO it's more appropriate to give more praise to Doom for being the grandfather of FPS gaming than Quake. In fact, I personally think Doom is a much better game than Quake, a sentiment that I often see online. Not to say that Quake didn't have any gameplay refinements, but going from Doom -> Quake was a much smaller gap gameplay-wise than going from any 3rd person 3D game -> Mario 64.

    • @goranisacson2502
      @goranisacson2502 Před 2 lety +68

      I think it's a matter of influence. Quake was monumental to the PC world as SM64 was to consoles, but if you look at most 3D games today I feel like you'd have an easier time tracing Mario's DNA to them than Quake's. Most big FPS games these days are military shooters or like, battle royales were people are jumping and building and platforming, and I dunno if I feel that strong a kinship with them and Quake. CoD kinda stole the crown? But Assassin's Creed, platformers, 3D action games who were inspired by SM64's camera... sometimes you're first in, but that doesn't make you the baby's daddy, you know?
      Also Descent? Really? Even the most annoying of PCMR-sheep barely remember Descent. Point me to a Descent-like produced in like the latest ten years that's NOT some obscure indie game made by a superdedicated fan and who's sold like less than 10K copies, that game lent it's DNA to NOBODY.

      I mean its about impact not strictly chronology. Even if other games did 3D earlier and at times arguably better for their genre, it's undeniable how much of a benchmark M64 is and was, it and Ocarina are absolutely the games who became the standard not just qualitatively but by sheer reach.

      Well, the gap between Mario World and NSMB was 14-16 years, depending on which launch date you take. It might have taken Metroid 19 years from Fusion to Dread, but if we consider the remakes (which were basically new games as well, being so different from the original), the gap between Zero Mission and Samus Returns is "only" 12 years. :D
      The question is, how will 2D Mario continue next? It's been already 9 years since NSMBU and I can't imagine them doing another one of those. There is Mario Maker of course, but that's not the same as a complete new game made by Nintendo themselves. I hope they re-invent 2D Mario, because the NSMB games were just wayyy too similar.

      I mean, if it's like Samus Returns, it probably isn't; Samus Returns was good but it was clearly worse than the other post-GB 2D Metroids, with the melee slowing basic combat to a crawl, and it wasn't exactly very long. I certainly would not pay 60 bucks for a game that primarily seems to be a sequel to it; I kind of regret paying 40 for it and wish I had waited a bit. Note that I have no similar regrets about, say, Fusion, a game I've played through like a dozen times and even managed to get the best ending in, as opposed to about one full playthroughs of Samus Returns and one "this game is more boring than I remember" playthrough that lasted an hour at most.
      Besides, Dread only costs that much because it's a Switch game and that's the default price point for first party Switch games, not because it deserves it more; Pokemon got much worse overall from 3DS to Switch and it went from 40 to 60 , the Link's Awakening remake was a polished up GB game and it got to be 60, and going from Samus Returns to Dread seems to be the exact same thing to me, the console is the reason for it, not the genre.

      @@hoodedman6579 Good news for you, they apparently took the criticisms about the melee counter slowing down combat to heart and made it much more fast-paced. You can now hit an enemy while running and don't have to wait for them to flash in order to counter. They specifically emphasized this in the marketing, so apparently they knew it was a problem.

    As someone who's shooting a movie for my rock band in black and white (except for a few short animated color sequences), this is definitely relatable. While most major studios stopped shooting films in black and white by 1966 (unless done for artistic reasons), the absence of color has it's advantages and since the late 90's, it seems like a lot of indie filmmakers are shooting films as such for similar reasons as me.

      For christ sakes Hollow Knight is 15 while Fifa is 60/70, I'd say Mania and HK are more than worthy to be at least 30 and should be slightly more Liberal/confident with their pricing while we should make it so new 3D games aren't automatically expensive.
      We need pricing to be more accurate to value to some form of extent, I'm not going to complain games like Terraria are 10 bucks but it's certainly an overly generous price.
