  • In this video I use Arturia Beatstep with the MPC LIVE Bassline ( amzn.to/2MocRsE )standalone synthesizer. As of version 2.3 we can now use 3 plugins on the mpc live in standalone mode. This is firmware version 2.3 of the MPC LIVE.

    By the way, you CAN connect the USB cable to the MPC LIVE to power the Beatstep. Also, the Beatstep is able to send MIDI Clock to the MPC LIVE through the USB cable, just set the MPC to receive MIDI Clock and it works no problem. However, you CANNOT send MIDI Clock through the USB cable from the MPC LIVE to the Beatstep. You also can use all the encoders on the Beatstep to control the Bassline synth parameters, and use the pads on the Beatstep to play the Bassline synth live. This is as of version 2.3.

      Matthew Stratton is it possible to sync the beatstep with the MPC live project bpm? Or send midiclock from MPC to the beatstep?

      Can you send clock and midi notes from the Mpc to the synth, thru usb cable, with the new 2.8 os update?

      One more, can you use the midi out port as a midi thru port? Thx

      @@LukezyM Yes you can now. I have MIDI clock being sent to my Beatstep Pro and my MiniBrute 2S via USB. Just check the SYNC button on your MIDI ports OUTPUT page in the MPC’s PREFERENCES. 😉👍

    Thanks so much for this. I have been looking for a 16 step hardware sequencer to use with my MPC One and this looks like it could be useful in a lot of situations.
    Currently on amazon for a little over $100, Absolute steal.

    Matt this video is excellent. You did one on the keystep and I was wondering if you could do one more indepth using the sequencer on the keystep you have.

    How about the mid channel?
    the beatstep will control al 16 midi channels in the MPC each time you change track/program.

    Bro since the firmware update I think thinks have slightly changed. I'm super into making my best step work with my mpc live 2. Can you assign the knobs to the q link?

    Nice! Can you use the beatstep as a controller? Lets say controling the filter of a synth with a knob on the beatstep. Also can you just plug it in the usb port in the mpc? So it would be powered and a controller?

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 5 lety

      Yes, you can use the beat step as a controller. The pads can play notes and the knobs can control any parameter that you assign them to in the midi control/ Midi learn menu (including the filter of a synth). The usb port powers the beatstep with no issue.

    Hey Matt! Is it possible to use the mpc live library when you’re in controller mode? I can’t seem to access the library that comes with the live when I’m using the mpc in controller mode.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 5 lety

      Yes. You need to login to your account on Akai’s website to download and install the library onto your computer.

      @MatthewStratton  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the comment. You can set legato to on within the beatstep MIDI control center software, but it is a global setting and cannot be set to specific notes.

    Just to make things clear: beatstep can sequence only the selected/active Track, right? (Have you tried switching tracks???)

      I guess the plugin tracks are open for further experimentation, as they have a midi channel parameter... have you tried the beatstep with those? I go get my machinedrum to see

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 5 lety

      @@davidkapitany1240 Haven't tried yet. If I am thinking about it correctly, it would be helpful when moving through tracks. So you set your midi channel on the plugin to match the midi channel on the beatstep. This way the beatstep doesn't trigger other plugins when moving through tracks. Don't think it has anything to do with multi tibral though. Still one track at a time.

    • @davidkapitany1240
      @davidkapitany1240 Před 5 lety

      @@MatthewStratton I've tried it with Machinedrum (which isn't a typical midi seq/controller as you might know), but still I can trigger only the active track without any regard to the selected midi channel. And it even triggered the sound of a muted track, hehe (most gears mute the midi data, not the sound of the patchm, so that was a bit of a surprise)
      So I'm still curious if a more convenient controller does otherwise....

  • @PriscillaGomez

    Excellent walkthrough! But I had to give it a thumbs down because it would have really helped for you to point out all the connections ie stand-alone mode or are you connecting the live to a computer? What are my options and adjustments if I don’t have plugins? This is a common mistake that many tutorial peeps make. And I know it’s a fine line between too much info and not enough. Anyway thanks for taking time to walkthrough the rest of the setup. Looking forward to the next video!

    I can't see how 12:00 is a good thing. A lack of multi-timbral midi input is a huge handicap for creating on this machine. It will also trigger any notes in that range while scrolling through programs. Terrible for live use currently. Midi input assign has been present on prior MPCs going back to the 90s. Also this creative work around you present won't be relevant with the upcoming updates unless you adjust the midi channel.

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 5 lety

      I agree, multi-timbral functionality needed. In regards to switching programs: It is easy to keep a blank sequence on the beatstep to switch to when changing programs to avoid triggering programs when changing tracks/ programs. I am not sure what you mean about changing the midi track in regards to the update, but changing the midi channel on the beatstep is as easy as pushing shift + chan and one of the 16 pads. I still stand by 12:00 being a good thing as you can easily layer sounds with no issue when creating a sequence. But to each their own, if doesn't work for you then it doesn't work.
