Abandoned Ghost Town Exploration in Aspen, Colorado

- What an adventure day!! Join us a we explore Independence Ghost Town and drive up Independence Pass on the first day it opened. We ended our day with a quick walk around Aspen and checked out another trail in the area.
Independence Ghost Town is located about 16 miles outside of Aspen at 10,900 feet. The town is located off Independence Pass which passes over the Continental Divide and connects Aspen and Leadville.
You can explore the town via a network of trails that wind through the valley. Independence was founded in 1879 and just a few short years later became the ghost town that it is today. There were once over 47 buildings including multiple saloons to keep the miners entertained.
Independence Pass is a seasonal road that generally closes in November and opens Memorial Day weekend. This year it opened a little later and we were able to drive it on the first day it was open. I was not prepared for the gorgeousness that was Independence Pass.
I hope you enjoy hanging out with us and exploring Independence Ghost Town. The history of these towns always grab my attention and pull me in. I hope you can enjoy my dorkiness and join right in.

Helloooo Michele and Feens! Woo hoo…welcome to Colorado! Independence Pass is very beautiful! I am super glad you two got to enjoy it! Ha…Feens looks in his element in the snow. He is like “hey…I will love you even more if we stay here!!” Hehehe. Aspen is awesome! I only get there about once per year…..but always enjoy it.
I am off to Des Moines IA today for work :-(. But, I will continue on to Washington DC to visit my parents for the week until I have to return to IA to bring my boss back to CO.
OMG he loves snow so much and will always be the first to find it and roll in it. I fell in love with those mountains! So beautiful! I love DC I hope you have a blast there before returning to the best state….Colorado that is 🤣
What a fun adventure!! Finley and I enjoyed w🥲 seeing all the amazing vistas and cool mining town. We’ve not been to Independence yet but I’ve just added it to the list 😊

@@MicheleShanklin Yes Utah has been lovely. We are hot footing it to Bend, OR to meet up with a friend on Thursday and then we’ll hang out there for a few weeks. May even go to the Overland Expo PNW in Redmond, OR 😊

Michele, So happy to see this adventure as it was a trip down memory lane for me. I explored the Independence Pass Ghost Town a few years ago and like yourself thought it was a very cool place. Imagining the life of the people there at that time. I loved the shot of you and Phenz ( sorry for the incorrect spelling) sitting on the bench, so sweet. I thought the drive down the pass was a white knuckle drive. Did you feel the same ?
Do you think much has changed since you visited? I’m always interested to hear what time does to these places. I have a still shot I grabbed from that. It was one of my favorite moments 🧡 I didn’t think it was too bad but maybe that’s because now that I’ve towed down passes just being in a car feels easier 🤣🤣
@@MicheleShanklin From your video it looked pretty much the same. Funny thing when I was exploring one of the buildings a couple came around the corner of the building and we startled each other, jumped with a bit a of yelp...LOL! It was so quiet and you get so involved that you're not watching for other people. As for the drive, you're a better woman than me!
