So annoying that the police said she was too “calm”. Like if you were being raped and severely traumatized for the past 26 hours it probably became an out of body experience for her and she just disconnected. Who are they to decide whats an appropriate trauma response?!
I had a policeman tell me after I reported a doorstep visitor who wanted to use my phone that I was making it up and needed counselling. The visitor was wanted by three overlapping forces as oart of a fraud ring. She'd been on crimewatch. I later got her name and knew where she often stayed. He was a very pretty boy. Later on a very good policeman got these details. Bad apples in every box. Pretty boy was sacked I later learned for a misogynistic arrest. Mmm.
Annoying that was said by the officer. Similarly, I had a therapist tell me I didn’t need therapy because I didn’t cry during the session. I was recalling a terrible event that has caused a lot of anxiety and insomnia. She said, “ well I have clients that can’t stop crying.” And dismissed me!
@@barbiejean7947 I have a very similar experience, I've got a mental breakdown after being exhausted and living with depression for years, I just kept having panic attacks and tetany seizures, sometimes with episodes of full blindness for minutes (which is not safe on its own, but I had kids around)... my friends took me to psychiatric hospital for a week and they genuinely didn't want to hospitalize me, because I seemed too calm at the moment to have such problems... and even though they happened to hospitalize be based on what my friends told them they witnessed, they didn't help me with anything, I had no neurological appointment during the stay, they were just asking me the same questions and repeatedly "surprising" me with observations like that I was way too organized and calm to have any mental issues, that it would probably get better if I've decreased the stress in my life (even though I was the first one who actually mentioned it waiting for maybe a further advice or at least a brochure or a book or whatever may help). They were clueless. It helped me, though, because I was just able to switch off, I slept almost 14 hours per day, I had no duties, I've read like 2000 pages of books in their library... it was a nice "me time", but I was probably expecting more by mental health professionals than just letting me rest for a while and then put me back with literally no more information about my status than I had entering the unit. (It's years ago, I helped myself significantly using random sources of wisdom, my kids grew older, our financial situation improved a bit, so it all together got better, but I'm still very frustrated that this is what happens there, maybe to people who had not so much luck being able to manage as I had been able to...)
Not to mention that she had been through the whole mess for 4 years before that; it's no wonder she was so calm. Poor child.

I was so upset when I heard after being kidnapped, she came home and nobody cared. No open arms. Most cops didn’t even listen at first. She was completely alone which is devastating. She’s incredibly smart and I’m happy everything didn’t bring her down. She is a warrior and she’s came such a long way. ❤

The sick thing was that Lisa's prior abuse was what likely saved her whilst in the clutches of Long. She was already a seasoned victim of abuse and had learned the art of switching off. Had she never experienced that prior abuse, she may have fallen apart in the way most other girls would and ended up on the list of murder victims. I'm glad she was able to turn her life around for the better for sure....
I was thinking the very same thing. Lisa knew an abusers weakness and MO. Very sad for all the awful things she went through in her life, but she is hero and like you also mention she most likely saved lives. I hope she has a great life now, and I wish her everything good.

I experienced being exposed to my parents doing 18+ stuff as a child as well. It truly messed me up and I was disgusted with myself once puberty started. Parents need to stop being so neglectful

I feel like it should be under the child sexual abuse umbrella, cause that is fucked up. Like kids should not be seeing that shit on the regular. But I also wonder, our ancestors all lived in one room homes, had 6 kids and did the nasty in front of the kids 24/7. Was the mental toll as bad back then or did no one just talk about it? Cause humans lived like that for most of our history but only lately has it become weird and even abusive. Considering how Lisa was treated by the police when she filed a report, I am not surprised that the man got away for so long... Sexism and rape culture have made all of this happen. Lisa is really strong! I am amazed at how she kept her composure during the torture she went through. Lisa's story was not initially ignored by law enforcement because of sexism, if you were really paying attention.
We don't have rape culture in the west. We don't condone rape, it's not incentivized, it's not legal, there are punishments, go touch grass.
Yeah, I can't believe how the police, social services, or anyone frantically didn't rescue him as a child while his mom was having sex with strange men, in the bed she shared with child. Or the catastrophic accidents he had a little boy, I guess I would just say, sexism.
Furthermore, people comment all the time on body language and say whether complete strangers are telling the truth or not, I am certain you've done it..is that sexism? A police officer did believe her, but initially, they didn't because umm people think they are human lie detectors, and I am certain you've been guilty of this as well and have been wrong.
I heard about this case through a movie on Netflix called Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey and remember being in absolute awe of this young lady’s determination to stay alive, as well as how smart she is. The ending made me cry of relief knowing that she managed to move on and build the best life she could for herself. Such a hero 🥺

Extremely smart doesn’t even begin to cover it. “Play accordingly” to try and gain the killer sympathy is a common behavior, leaving your fingerprints on every inche you can is more elaborated, but it’s a regularly given instruction by the police… Now: Clenching her jaw so that her blindfold ended up a little looser, constructing a perfectly accurate picture of his face by touching it and ONLY by touch… All while, going through hell on earth… And then combining all of what she got from these different strategies to deductively build a picture perfect of him - I don’t remember now, but I believe it was a extremely short time if nothing but uninterrupted torment - it’s literally so impressive that if it was a movie people would complain about it being “too unrealistic”. You know you mentioned that this wasn’t a “nice” story and most of them aren’t on your channel because of the nature of the topics. However, I consider this a win, a victim survived and found a new will to live. That’s rare and I am so glad that she’s ok
I think the fact that she said her dad was sick rather than her mom was such an important factor to this. Instead of seeing the example of women that his mother set for him, he saw in Lisa a kind, devoted, and soft woman that he never got to experience. She subverted the vision of women he had that he had so much anger against and gave him affection that he lacked. The fact that she also said she was a caregiver, gave him the feeling as well of a “maternal” love. Her choices for her story were brilliant!
Lisa is one of my own person heroes. Learning that she had planned to kill herself the very day all this started, it blows my mind. This should have NEVER happened to her, but it is a literal miracle that she not only didn’t take her life and survived that evil man. She is incredible.
She saved so many lives and rapes from occurring! I hope she knows how brave and heroic she is. I hope that after this she had a wonderful life full of kindness and real love🙏❤️🕊️✨. She deserves it after such a terrible childhood ❣️

My husband and I really struggled with addiction quite a few years ago. Lost our vehicles and our home. Had to move in with family and start over. I got sober before him. Caught him being unfaithful multiple times. I sat with a loaded gun my lap and watched him sleep 3 nights in a row. I had made the decision that I was either going to off myself or him because I couldn't take it anymore. I'm so grateful everyday now that I didn't do that. Scary to think about the things we're capable of when we're mentally unstable. I am now medicated and could NEVER imagine behaving that way.
The “you don’t act like a victim” shit pisses me the fuck off. I was raped by my “best friend” and my FEMALE police officer said I was lying because I didn’t want to look the advocate in the eye reciting my story of how I just been raped and she said “normal people who have been just been raped would be able to do that”. He went on to admit he did it PUBLICLY on social media and she still refused to do anything. Then we have a fair here every year and he saw me smiled, laughed, and waved at me. Like traumatic as fuck then you have detectives and officers who say you’re not enough of a victim.

To be fair this shit is one of the reasons I didn't bother trying to report my CSA to the police. I most likely have undiagnosed autism so I don't express my emotions in the typical way anyway. With trauma unless someone is actively making me talk about it I look completely fine
You know, what's so bad is that without all of his head trauma, he might have gone on to be "normal" in life. Even after the trauma he suffered from his mom, he was able to have a stable relationship with Cindy which leads me to believe everything that happened was a direct result of the motorcycle accident he was in. What a shame that it turned him into such a sick and twisted individual.

The motorcycle accident caused first horrible change then second accident into telephone pole with Mary caused the second. Not an excuse by any means however one has to wonder if environment (mother) started the process and nature (accidents) caused the progression.

It blows my mind that, in the 80s, when forensic science was still a baby and there wasn't all this true crime content, Lisa was smart enough to leave her fingerprints everywhere and all the other measures she took to be able to later identify him.
And the sheer fucking resilience, not being believed by multiple people at first, and still pushing on until someone finally took her seriously...

Using finger prints to solve crimes started in 1958 it wasn’t fairly new ..now dna on the other hand wasn’t
This really should be highlighted more... back then we didn't have all these CSI shows or the internet. Forensics was still developing and a lot of police depts were still getting on board so I don't think the general public wouldn't have been as familiar w these techniques as we are now.

Please please cover the case of Morgan Kay Harris from Utah!! Her mom is a family friend and the whole situation is absolutely heartbreaking. She and her dog were locked in a storage unit by her boyfriend and then he set it on fire. The justice system totally failed her because he had a history of abusing women and despite violating parole over and over again he never served a sentence for his crimes. Even now he is being treated like he stole a candy bar at a grocery store! This is my absolute favorite true crime channel! I admire how much respect you always show to victims! It would mean the world to so many people if you could cover this.
Many people are unaware of the fact that head trauma can change a persons personality. With all the blows to his head no wonder he ended up the way he did. Very sad story.

Actualy all of his syptomes after his motobike actident are typical of frotal lobe damage to the brain. The front of his brain definitely had permanent and non reversable damage.

Yes! I think her criminal justice degree, gives her a unique insight, that I don't typically find on channels with non-professional creators. While her empathetic nature gives her videos a genuine side that you don't unusually find with creators with professional backgrounds. One of my fav TC creators 😊
@hallievanoutryve3109 This may be a side note but I especially appreciate how she speaks about people with physical disabilities and/or mental illnesses. These topics come up a lot in true crime and they are often talked about ignorantly or in a stigmatizing way. As someone with a disabled partner and several family members with mental health issues I REALLY appreciate that I don't have to feel worried about misinformation and stigma when I click on her videos.

To be kidnapped, 26 hours would definitely feel like an eternity. But damn, she gained his trust "fast." I am glad she was so smart about it to bring his disgusting crimes to an end. Sad it had to happen the way it did, but I am very proud of her. She did amazing. Bring justice to the ones who didn't get lucky enough to survive. None of this should have happened to any of them in the first place though. Sad world we live in.

I often wonder about the abusive parent, in this case, his mother, and how she feels about how her actions affected and caused her son to turn out as he did...she was no better than him. I wish the original abusers paid for THEIR part in these matters.

I am literally baffled by how identical my story is to hers, as well as my approach to trauma. I’ve even been accused of lying by police, and others just because I was calm as well. People don’t understand the depth of what you are capable of once you’ve experienced such trauma. It no longer makes you feel afraid, you feel numb to it all.

This is why it's so important to spread TBI (traumatic Brain Injury) awareness. All those head injuries undiagnosed or treated properly. My husband was hit off his motorcycle and in a coma for 4 months, upon impact. He's also highly sexual, but there are thousands of ways survivors change. Some suffer with severe anger and lack other emotions. March is tbi awareness. One of the most common, yet underfunded, uninformed disabilities.
As a victim of multiple SA’s, You act differently when it’s happened multiple times. I only freaked out the first time and the one time unlawful confinement was involved. Its crazy because police rejected her story because she was acting to calm, but police rejected mine because I acted too weird. It’s almost as if there’s no “correct” way to react

Its honestly so sad how this guy essentially had a horrific switch flipped in his mind after a devastating accident that turned him from a relatively happy, albeit troubled married man in the military, into a deranged sex crazed murderer. Never heard of another case like this where a TBI from an accident completely morphs the killers personality in an instant into the monster he became. Maybe it was in there all along given his genetic abnormalities and traumatic upbringing, but maybe the brain injuries suffered really did turn him into a monster committing absolutely horrific crimes he never would have previously

U should do shanda sharer. She was a 12 year old girl who was brutally killed by her ex girlfriend's ex girlfriend. 4 teenage girls tortured and beat her for hours. Her story is harrowing. The amount of head trauma this man had- no wonder he became a complete monster. Personalities ALWAYS change for the WORST when it comes to serious head trauma.
Lisa’s story always inspired me. It is eerily similar to my life in the sense of she was a twin in foster care, then got out at seven, which is the exact age that I got out of foster care had a tumultuous life with sex abuse, and had a job at a donut shop at a young age because I was literally every single one of those things. Sometimes I look back and I appreciate that I made it through all those hard times, and those late nights walking home alone as a kid she’s a powerful and strong person. I’m glad she made it as well. Hopefully she’s healed a little bit overtime. I know it doesn’t completely go away but at least you can recover in a small way.
L is a had an inner light that hadn't been touched by her abusers. She looked different to the others. Proof that whatever the abuse...some people remain pure. Not all abused children fall into bad ways. I hope you do recover. Fully. Its possible.

I think his mom needs to be held accountable too. If you were abusing/neglecting your kids and they become serial killers, the parents should be arrested or have to pay money to the families of the victims. I hate how these people (sometimes) knowingly create rapists/serial killers. There’s as much blame on them as the killer, bc in retrospect they wouldn’t have been like that if parents weren’t assholes.
I mean how far back should we go with the blame though? I mean what about his mother's abuse? She was supposedly sexually abused her entire childhood and only married his father to get away from her stepfather who was raping her. Then we could likely look into both the grandmother and the stepfather's past and I'm sure we would discover more abuse there as well. Hurt people often go on to hurt people. I completely get the urge to yearn for accountability but I am just not sure how practical it is...
I understand your feelings but it's likely a cycle of abuse. It most times does not start with the parent, it's usually a generational issue.
Sometimes it's generational purely based on the fact that it's been normalized to them and they don't even know what normal boundaries are. They sometimes don't even see what they're doing as abusive but just, life. 😑

This was the perfect case to start the year with because in the mist of pure evil pure good emerged. Lisa is a truly good soul and an inspiration for women everywhere. I've heard this story and admire Lisa more than i can express. She showed strength and cunning WAY beyond her years. I'm not sure if most older grown women would be able to push down their fear and panic to do what she did. Anyway, I've never heard all the details that you put into it. Most psychopaths have a smaller than normal prefrontal cortex. This means that they are not as good at higher process reasoning, analysis, and by having willpower and control over their emotions.
This not only impairs the IQ, it makes the individual more susceptible to manipulation.
This does go to show when you meet someone with a psychopathic brain (smaller prefrontal cortex) who is actually well-adjusted, usually you will find a strong support structure that enforced boundaries and a connection to community in their upbringing.
Kinda scary to think about how isolated kids are nowadays. Seems like the perfect society to breed more violent uncaring psychopaths.

I knew it would be Bobby Joe Long as soon as I read the title. Lisa's story has always been so interesting to me. I have no idea what I would've done if I had been in her situation when I was 17. The movie about her story where she's portrayed by Katie Douglas is incredible. Definitely recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it

The part about the last accident Bobby Joe Long was in and how afterwards he had an extreme shift in behavior made me think about a common case study we learned in intro to psychology about a man named Phineas Gage. In short, he was an American railroad construction worker in the 1800's who suffered severe trauma to the head, where an iron rod was shoved right through his head. Afterwards, he experienced an extreme shift in behavior, from having a relatively "normal" temperament to extremely angry and easily aggravated. This case study was some of the first evidence on record for where emotion was controlled in the brain. I'm so curious - what would have happened if he never experienced that injury? Would all of this have been avoided? If this case happened today, would this be a talking point in the trial?

Just like other serial killers he could've been stopped and lots of his crimes could've been prevented. This case makes my blood boil and this monster makes me sick. Wow.. Lisa is just rock solid. She is truly an inspiration. Rest In Peace to the Victims, known and unknown and prayers of healing to the Survivors still out there. It got me thinking though, with so many attacks it would be nothing short of a miracle if there were no babies conceived in these attacks. If there was I hope they never found out what conceived them.

There is a case that's covered in Evil Lives Here of Mitchelle Blair and although we get a lot of information about the case and her surviving child, it would be really interesting to hear about Mitchelle's upbringing and how she got to the that point.
this girl is fantastic. all respect to her and also Kara Robinson-- this headline reminded me of her, they're both stories I'll never forget. real life Final Girls and then some! both became police officers too!
I've questioned why I listen and I feel it is because of the respect you show the victims of the vile monsters you explore
It’s so sad that, had the police listened to her when she got home from Bobby’s, the last girl would probably still have been alive.
I also doubt that any of the cops who said she was lying due to being “too calm” - never got held accountable of allowing that last girl to die.
I’m not religious but I can see clearly that this woman was meant to be here for a purpose. Her story of survival and how things turned out is just incredible.

This one is about my grandma's friend and she is a very strong woman and is an all around amazing woman, who was extremely smart for her age at the time of the abduction. She used reverse psychology on him and she left a used pad under his passenger seat to have her DNA as proof that she was in that car super smart move

What a case to start with in 2024, Danielle! This one had me going through a whole range of feelings! I had never even heard about this story before, and as usual, your ability to tell these stories is second to none! You convey such empathy and such powerful emotions that I’m unable to stop watching until the very end! This one was particularly harrowing and yet, empowering at the same time. The strength of Lisa and her self control to keep her cool to ensure he was caught, whether she made it out alive or not, was just awesome! Such a perfect story of the ultimate monster defeated by a brilliant victim. Even better when said victim is a woman!

I know it's odd to say, but given all that occurred with Bobby Joe Long's life in his early years; he's almost a sympathetic villain and I am so glad that you did include the information about his early life. I am nearly certain that if they had considered it, they would have likely found brain damage. Couple that with the dysfunctional home life and ta-da you have a criminal who hurts women. It's so easy to just see someone as evil and not saying he wasn't a very bad person; but you feel sympathetic to the little boy who suffered so much in his life.
With that being said, in a weirdly, horrific way; he also saved Lisa McVey. He gave her something to live for. I am so happy to see that she was able to move forward with her life and use her experience to help others.
