    When I started to play commander (about 3-4 years ago) I had a hard time reaching 99 cards...
    Now I always have to cut 20-30 cards xD

    • @olafthemoose9413
      @olafthemoose9413 Před 2 lety +2

      And here I am comfortably getting to about 200 cards

    • @z-mashupz8069
      @z-mashupz8069 Před 2 lety

      It's the opposite for me, my early deck I wanted to put so many things into my deck that I would end up with 50 extra cards, over time I've gotten better a judging weather or not to put something in my deck in the first place.

      @@z-mashupz8069 It's been a rollercoster for me. Have been playing on and off for over 20 years. As a beginner back then, of course, lots of missteps and too much jank in my decks because it was shiny. Also understanding that your 60 card deck should be 60 cards, not 65 or whatever.
      Then commander got popular and I returned to play magic and I just didn't have all that many cards to support one theme for singleton 99 card decks because my collection was a bunch of playsets of certain cards and it felt like I didn't have anything to put into my decks. Like on the extreme end, even in Casual I might play 24 lands and 36 spells, 4 copies each, meaning I'd have 9 different Spells in my deck. And now I'm supposed to make decks with like 60-70 non-land cards? While my collection was always pretty deep with several thousands of cards, WotC just went ULTRA power creep in their creature designs invalidating a huge chunk of my collection, to the point that a once over the top powerful card like "Spirit Monger" (6/6 for 5 WITH upside was INSANE in 2001) is now an ... okay drop but probably doesn't even make it into many deck-lists anymore.
      Only after a couple of ... uh.... shopping sprees over the years am I again in the fortunate position of having to make hard decisions about which cards to cut because for any given theme/commander/color combo there are now more "must plays" than there are available slots.

    Golgari was the first Commander deck I made. SlimeFoot, The Stowaway was my commander and the deck focused on saproling token creation and the sacrificing the tokens to damage my opponents

      When I got into commander, Slimefoot was one of my favorite legendaries. And man, he's a beast if built well. He can have an almost non-interactible board from the sheer amount of sacrifices and drains.

    Great video. Golgari is my favorite color combo. It surprises me that do much of your decks are made up of staples though. 25-30 staples, 35-38 lands, and 1 commander only leaves 32-39 cards for your deck theme. I prefer to focus on the theme and use staples to fill in the gaps that my deck doesn't handle well.
    For example, instead of Cultivate, I might play Grisly Salvage.
    Often these 'on theme' alternates are less powerful is less reliable but this helps me keep my decks at a casual power level and makes each of my decks feel different from each other.

      Wow 38 lands? Really? My land count is 33 across the 8 decks I have, and it's the perfect number. The game is way to fast and efficient for so many lands, at least for my group and decks.

      @@BardtheHowler I have a player in my playgroup who builds his decks like that and I see him like every third game struggling getting his lands.
      I kinda feel bad playing early Boardwipes that kill rocks 😅.

    • @BardtheHowler
      @BardtheHowler Před 2 lety +1

      @@leonfriedemann9151 I don't really even run rocks much anymore honestly, so that's not a super big issue in my group. I keep my average mana curve topping out at 3 with maybe 2 or 3 cards at 4+. Most of my ramp, if I run any at all, is either mana dorks or land auras. Also depends on color/s of course. There is a giant amount of 1, 2, and 3 mana spells and bodies that say draw a card. That's how I build now. I'll pay that mana to draw a card, and get a dude or some effect. I churn through my decks getting draws, and I mostly play at the end step of the player before me. It's all the value, and you don't have to really use spell ramp or rocks. I just find all that or tons of lands in the deck to be highly inefficient.

    Wow, really surprised Pernicious Deed was not mentioned. It's an incredible boardwipe and is not very expensive (like $5). Like Toxic Deluge, if you have the biggest thing on the board you can make sure it survives, and you will often get 5, 6, or more permanents when you blow it up.

    Fiend Artisan is one of my personal favorites. It's easy to cast because it's only a 2 drop and both its pips are golgari hybrid mana. Its almost always going to be bigger than a 1/1, especially if you're doing graveyard stuff or sacrificing creatures. And it let's you cast pretty much any creature in your deck for 1 extra mana. Insanely useful in pretty much any golgari deck.

    Gotta say, Selesnya, Golgari, and Simic are probably my favorite color spreads. To the point that my strongest non-EDH deck was a Simic hybrid beatdown/control.
    That said, for EDH, I prefer a tri-color deck of Green/Black/White. All the removal except bounce, either boat loads of tokens or huge monsters (or both), draw and tutoring, ramp, Life gain and life pay. all sorts of good stuff.
