  • Tony Hawk is the consigliere of skateboarding and an icon of pop culture. He's got more than a dozen X-Games medals, was named the top vert skater every year from 1984 to 1996, and boasts one of the most commercially and critically successful video-game franchises of all time, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. But how is he with spicy food? Find out as The Birdman makes his triumphant return to Hot Ones and takes on not only the wings of death, but also the brand-new Hot Ones Hot Pockets-now available nationwide. Along the way, he discusses the evolution of skate slang, tales from the grommet come-up, and the Space Jam follow-up that almost was.

What other sport has one person had such an impact... maybe Michael Jordan in Basketball but Nike marketing him to people has a lot to do with that. Tony Hawk never had a brand like that pushing him.

It's amazing the longevity that Tony Hawk has had. He's around 11 years older than me, but I remember being a very young kid and skateboarding and he was a pro then. And then all he has accomplished, and given back to skateboarding. Even after I stopped skateboarding 20+ years ago is around when THPS and those games came out. I played most of them endlessly. He is someone I very much looked up to, and he was a good role model for younger skateboarders to have all these decades up til this very day. He's our Michael Jordan. An absolute living legend. Much love and respect to Tony Hawk.

I'm 74. I first started skate boarding in Seattle as early as 1963. We stole the trucks/wheels off of the roller skates at the local skating rink. There were no skateboard shops or parks. We primarily went for speed down hills. I broke a finger once during a local competition held in a parking lot. My trick was a 360 spin on the rear wheels then I fell. We once got pulled over by the local police for speeding down a hill. He used his lights to pull us over, but since we didn't have brakes, we had to just let it run out at the bottom of the hill. We were not looked at very favorably back then. In the early 70s, in Palo Alto, we once again started boarding. With the new wheels it was into empty swimming pools that had been drained. Everyone built their own boards, I still have mine in solid oak, flat.
