Hi everyone! I wanted to stop by and say that I do believe these individuals as well as the entire group are incredibly talented and obviously so sweet. Like I said in the video, I will definitely watch more from them (the FULL GROUP) in the future! Also, I have learned from you all that this was at the end of a long show and just for fun, which does change things a bit for me. Please remember to be kind in the comments, as I can only give you my personal opinion, in the moment, and the whole point of this channel for me is to learn and grow every day. I cannot wait to hear another number by the full group so I can give a more complete reaction!! Thank you all!

Scott and Mitch used to have a side youtube channel called Superfruit. On that channel the two of them did a cover of Defying Gravity you should DEFINITELY check out. It was sort of Mitch's birthday gift to Scott because the two of them were supposed to see Wicked for Scott's birthday but then Scott was sick. The video is super silly and goofy but the vocals are insane

Scott is a baritone with an amazing range. Kirsty is a mezzo-soprano. Their "guy with the high voice" is Mitch Grassi, countertenor, also with an amazing range, who wasn't in this clip; he sings Elfaba's part in Defying Gravity in the Superfruit version, which you should totally watch. Matt is their bass now (it's Avi in the older stuff). Kevin is their beatboxer -- one of the best beatboxers on the planet -- who's a tenor when he sings, and also plays cello in some of their videos.
Most people start with their version of Hallelujah; I like the official video best, but the live version from one of their Christmas shows is great too, and a lot of people like it because you can see pretty clearly that Scott is taking over the bass line while Avi's singing the second verse; there's occasionally some argument about that. :)
After that, there's a bunch of great stuff. Their Daft Punk Medley is awesome, and got them their first Grammy. Their version of Bohemian Rhapsody freakin' rocks; Brian May linked it on his socials when it came out, with one word: "Enjoy." Sound of Silence, Imagine, Evolution of Music (awesome!), Evolution of Michael Jackson, bunch of other "Evolution" videos; they do medleys better than anyone else. I love their version of Can You Feel the Love Tonight, it's completely amazing. If you've heard the Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli version of The Prayer, you *have* to hear Pentatonix's version, holy sheep. They did a collab with Lindsey Stirling on a great version of Radioactive (you get to see Kevin play the cello in that one) and with Todrick Hall on Wizard of Ahs. Oh, and if you're a Mitch fan at this point (which you will be) you have to watch the live performance of Aha! at the Star Vista in Singapore -- great intro by Avi (one of his speaker-blowing bits), then the rest is Mitch + jet lag + multiple Red Bulls = their *very* best live performance ever. :)
Oh, and Pentatonix pretty much *owns* Christmas music. My favorites are Carol of the Bells (subtitled "Mitch, Breathe!") and The First Noel, but they also made 12 Days of Christmas fun again, and made Over the River worth listening to. They won their second Grammy for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy -- a group with no instruments does a brilliant job on a song with no words. Matt (the new bass guy) does a wonderfully fun job on You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch. Little Drummer Boy, Angels We Have Heard On High, Joy to the World, I Saw Three Ships, O Come All Ye Faithful... Just wander through the catalog and you can't go wrong.

Pentatonix has been around since 2011, with one member change in 2017 (the bass singer). There’s no official lead singer, but Scott (the blond guy you just saw) is credited as putting the band together and is their default spokesman/frontman.
    The members are:
Scott Hoying (baritone, huge range) *seen in this video
Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano) *seen in this video
    Mitch Grassi (tenor/countertenor)
    Kevin Olusola (tenor/beatboxer)
Avi Kaplan (2011-2017) / Matt Sallee (2018- present) (bass)
Some of their most popular songs are Hallelujah, Daft Punk, Sound of Silence, Amazing Grace, The Prayer. Some of their original songs include Sing, Run to You, Can’t Sleep Love, Be My Eyes.

the guy with the cell phone is helping them film the video. Also, Scott is well known for forgetting words, and since this is audience engagement and not one of their "scheduled" pieces, he probably didn't have the teleprompter to help out.

I was at that show in Orlando, and being part of that TikTok was so much fun! AJ met up with the group in Orlando so he and Scott could go to Epcot and hear the song they wrote for Luminous: The Symphony of Us. He's the one who helped them arrange this mashup for their TikTok. They didn't have much time to prepare, but Scott forgetting lyrics is typical. (We find it endearing.) He's actually the baritone of the group. Kirstie is a mezzo-soprano. This concert was towards the end of their tour, and they were all pretty tired by that point. It was still amazing to hear live. Be sure to check out Hallelujah, The Sound of Silence, or maybe The Prayer if you want to hear the whole group. 🤍

They do this at all of their concerts. They teach the crowd their portion and film a TikTok. It is SO much fun for the audience... And yes, they do this in the fly and it is a different song each concert.
Scott is the baritone of the group but covers the bass line and can also go pretty high.
Their concerts are huge and often sold out...and amazing accomplishment for a "bunch of chior nerds" singing acapella. Oh, and they have won 3 Grammys. You should react to more of their songs. Most people start with Hallelujah, Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Interestingly enough, Ben Folds was one of the judges on The Sing-Off in 2011 when a very young and new Pentatonix competed against other a capella groups and eventualy won that season, launching them to their current success (3 Grammy awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a reputation as the go-to group for things like Grammy tribute shows, and so on), I would seriously suggest that you check out either some official videos, like Sound of Silence or the recent A Kiss from a Rose, or some numbers from one of the best recent concert recordings, the 2022 Hollywood Bowl performance (90s Dance Medley, for example). ETA: Scott Hoying is the group's most extraverted member and in some ways is their public face. Annnd ... he forgets lyrics. Famously and frequently. BUT he also has an Emmy for musical arrangement and choir direction. He's done a bunch of solo work recently, with his own music. He is officially the group's baritone but has a huge range.

Thank you for asking for more information and for being willing to hear more from Pentatonix. Sorry, sometimes we Pentaholics get a little defensive if someone dares to imply that they are not absolutely perfect at absolutely everything! But we kind of got that way for a reason. I suggest Amazing Grace, any of their Christmas music (starting with Carol of the Bells), a quirky favorite of mine called Come Along, and their classic "greatest hits," Hallelujah and Bohemian Rhapsody. I just subscribed, because I like your way of analyzing, and I look forward to seeing your next review of PTX. (By the way, they aren't called "THE Pentatonix." Just "Pentatonix.")

You asked for a favorite Pentatonix song ... that's actually impossible because they are so different from song to song and each one they do seems to be better than the last. The songs most reactors start with are "Halleluiah", "The Prayer", "Imagine", "Amazing Grace", "White Winter Hymnal", "Mary DId You Know", "Daft Punk", and "Jolene". The last two won Grammys !!!! Others that show their versatility are "Can't Stop Us", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Can You Feel the love tonite", "Radioactive", "Havana", and I could go on and on and on ........ ENJOY THEM !!!!! :)

LOL! They create a tiktok with audience participation at every concert. They do something different every time, and usually Scott thinks of it during the day before the show. Scott actually made my audience sing O Fortuna in archaic Latin at the show I attended last Summer. It was definitely not the best one ever, LOL. Scott is technically a baritone but he covers the bass line when the bass (Formerly Avi Kaplan, currently Matt Sallee) has the lead, and he also has a beautiful high range. All five of them have huge ranges, but I'd say Scott has the biggest. Scott is something of a "Leader" though they don't technically have one, it's his personality. He does most of the talking, though Matt and Kevin do a lot of crowd hyping, and all five speak at every show and interview. I love hearing a professional singer's opinions about Pentatonix. You can literally throw a dart at their catalog and pick anything and they won't let you down, (they do covers, originals, Christmas music, collaborations, and solo side projects). If I were to suggest some to hear them all shine, I'd say two of their newest releases, Vevo live cover of "Kiss From a Rose," and "O Holy Night" are great choices. I also think you'd enjoy their covers of "The Prayer" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (rather than the official video, I suggest the "Pentatonix Live 2021 Yale Livestream" version because it's easier to see what everyone is doing). All of these are post-Avi in the Matt era. To hear Avi, you might enjoy their biggest hit "Hallelujah," "Daft Punk" (their first Grammy winner), "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (Their second Grammy winner), and I also love his parts in their original songs "Love Again" and "Light in the Hallway." Like I said, just throw a dart, it's all wonderful. I can't wait to hear what you make of them!

This was their audience bit for TikTok. They did a different thing each show of their tour, led by Scott with 1 or 2 other members sometimes joining. So this mashup was planned but maybe just a couple of days prior and was the only time they performed it on stage. And yes Scott admittedly has trouble with lyrics lol.
Can’t really go wrong with any song in their catalog, old or new.

Besides incredible musical (singing, arranging, composing, etc) abilities they are great stage performers and wonderful with the audience. They love their fans, their fans love them and it shows. Scott (the tall blond whose voice you inquired about) can cover the bass line when Matt is singing the lead and he can also get up high with Kirstie and Mitch. But it's not just Scott, they all have amazing ranges.

I “discovered” PTX about a year ago. As a kid, I lived in the New York metropolitan area, so spent a fair amount of time watching musicals, concerts, opera, etc. Pentatonix is my favorite group EVER. Every member has an amazing voice, including Kevin the beatboxer. If you want to hear his voice, watch the Official Video of Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone). His solo starts at 4:09.
Fun fact, someone commented that Mitch Grassi’s vocal range is 7 octaves, matched only by a handful of others, although when I did a little digging on the internet, others thought his range is only 6 octaves. His voice is most often compared to that of an angel by reactors on CZcams. I’ve also noticed most reactors mention they have goosebumps, especially the first time listening to him. 😊

Although Scott sings many of the leads, he is more like the frontman as all Pentatonix members can and do sing leads as well. This was done for a TicToc during a break. Scott is famous for forgetting lyrics and as teleprompter support during the shows.

It sounds like Pentatonix may not be to your taste. They are too pop for some traditional a capella people (and the last few years they have been experimenting with instruments and more vocal processing). And they are too "show choir" for many in the pop music community. But they have a lot of fans and their audiences have been steadily growing.
