  • How to reef and RS Quest on the land before going out on the water. Making sure you reef your dinghy correctly is really important, if done incorrectly it can cause some issue on the water. Big thanks to Portland Sea Cadets for the use of their boat.

Why did you stow the halyard in the port side pocket? It seems simpler and neater to stow it on the same side of the mast that it’s cleated on.

Was it deliberate not putting the reefing slug in? Manual says you should, but it doesn't seem useful at all for sail shape and just slows down reefing and shaking out.

I set up my Laser with single line jiffy reffing. I can still use the outhaul while reefed since the reef lines comes down from the aft cringle, down to a small block I've afixed to the outhaul itself. Therefore, outhaul useable when reefed still (weather conditions are very, very quick to change here sailing on a bay in the Pacific s shaping a reefed sail is handy. Anyhow, reef line, after leaving additiona block on the outhaul, then goes forward toward mast. I had a small cheek block there on the starboard side. Line goes up through this forward reef cringle, up to the forward reef cringle, out the port side of the sail, and down to a (new) cleat attached to the other side of the boom. Reef line needs to be fixed onto the boom on port side (as opposed to the mast or else the reef line would twist the boom toward port. This arrangement applies even force to starboard and port sides of the boom up forward. Regarding adjusting the halyard (yes, I had a halyard set up made), I had a second horn cleat put on the starboard side of the mast. I tied a loop into the halyard that corresponds to the reef cringle. I can run teh downhaul hook into the reef cringle if I need to add tension to the luff (this is alongside the reef line. Luff tension could also be applied via the halyard but the downhaul is already there so why not hook it up to the reef cringle? The project is a bit absurd but with the conditions it really makes it fun to pretend I am a big time sailor on a big boat. Haha. I love my toy. I call my boat "Passing Wind' and the giant logo on the sail has the two S's like a butt flatulating on the D in "Wind" sinc that letter is the sail on a little sailboat. I'm a dufus.

do you also use a cunningham? when you reef. on our club boats the tack hook is usually broken so the tack is tied to the goose neck,, so the question is do you just use the cunningham as the Reef Tack or do you tie a Reef Tack and still use the Cunningham as a cunning ham?

This is a very helpful video, but I think that the approach here is different from that described in V4 of the Quest rigging manual. Is there an intention to update the rigging manual?

    That hurts the sail...

What a palava! Surely you can come up with a slicker reefing system than this, which is out of the dark ages. Clearly you cannot reef this boat on the water. Shame because the rest of the design is good.

You can reef the RS Quest in 2 minutes on the water! The feedback from training centres worldwide suggested that single line reefing system causes more issue than benefits. If students accidentally pull the reefing line through the boom, you can loose alot of time re threading.

@@rssailingmarketing9396 Are you going to have a video about reefing on the water? This would be most helpful.

Are you talking about the reefing system on the Venture? Our Venture is almost impossible to reef because it takes so much effort to slide the bolt rope in the track. Raising the sail is a hernia inducing task as well.
