- You can get up to 1000 guests in Zoo Tycoon 1, so naturally the question arises: What is the smallest zoo that can get you those guests?

At first I felt bad the Gazelle had so little room. Then 1800 people were crammed together and suddenly the Gazelle pen started looking pretty good!
It's all a matter of perspective
Guest 999 doesn't look happy
yep, if I were one of those guest I would gladly switch places with the gazelle and live a posh life in her mansion ;)
Hate that gazelle.
fuckin' 1%
Who needs that much space?
Yeah, but the 1800 people path has a better view on the "swing behind the white fence", a world-class attraction, at least according to the ads that I keep seeing everywhere.
"You been to the tiny gazelle cage lately?" "Nah, there's nothing interesting there." "Actually you can see a swing behind a fence now" "Holy shit LET'S GO"
Might as well call it a museum, some famous person sat on it when they were a kid.
I love the fact that you *could* have given the guests access to the tree swing without compromising the challenge, but you didn't because you're a sadist.
Actually you get guests a lot slower if they have access to the swing. I think it might have something to do with it being occupied so guests think it's not available and leave.
@@MarcelVos Thats all fine and good, but I'll choose to believe it's because you didn't like them
@@MarcelVos makes sense, I definitely love to stick around places where what I want is just out of reach but tauntingly close
I love that the minimum zoo is literally just a themed restaurant with a gazelle mascot
I would totally visit a restaurant with a gazelle
You forgot about the display swing, which I am convinced is the most important part.

Ah, I see Marcel pulled the old “replace the hamster while the kids aren’t looking and pretend it lived longer” trick.
That is a mean trick to pull on your kids. Sooner or later they have to learn what death is.

They're witnessing an in game Easter egg
Guest: "The Gazelle was cool and all, but the swing on the other side of the fence was just astonishing. 10/10 would go there again."
I still remember the "traveling petting zoo with a goat" that was at a craft fair. Turned out it was literally one goat, but like 100s of people all around the 1 goat. The guy running the "zoo" said the craft fair said there would only be a few dozen people there, maybe 2 dozen kids, so the fair didn't want to pay for much, but every kid in town just walked there to see the "zoo."
games these days, so life like ;)
That's an amazing story. When was this?
@@607 Maybe a decade ago. I've seen much better "traveling zoos." Where they've had a lot of tents, with animals packed in cages with tiny walkways. One had an elephant. There just wasn't enough room for the animals and felt sad to see, but what do you expect with a traveling zoo?
@@gamesthatiplay9083 @Games That I Play Huh, interesting.
Weird to have that with a goat though, as you'll be able to find those at... petting zoos, too? Huh. Okay, I didn't realise this was the same thing. :P In Dutch they're called "children's farm".
@@gamesthatiplay9083 Actually a traveling zoo with only a goat is probably the best there could be short of not existing at all. So no the ones you saw weren't "better", they were objectively worse, with more animals leading miserable lives behind bars for your enjoyment and the peddler's profits. Good thing these "zoos" are on the way out these days, they're awfully inhumane. Unless they're in properly sized enclosures for conservation or breeding programs, exotic wild animals should be left in their native environments.
"Sold the gazelle and bought a fresh one" hahahaha I love it
Gotta have fresh Gazelle you know.
I'm only imagining how the commercials for this "zoo" are with all the money going into marketing.
"Come down to the Prarie Dog Cafe for scrumptious meals! We have a Gazelle! And the most fun (display only) swing in the tri state area!
I mean, it works doesn't it?
And the award for Most Popular Zoo goes to... this really cramped Mexican restaurant with a gazelle out front!
And a swing that no one can swing on.
When you blink and suddenly the gazelle has de-aged several years.
I didn't notice. I was too busy admiring the swing.
I'd love to see what the marketing department put out to make this bucket with a gazelle in it such a popular joint.
It's the restaurant, really. Best fried gazelle in town.

Add so it begins... in 1 year time, Marcel will of poured over the code to develop a method of filling every tile of an exhibit with large poo forcing some graphical bug interaction causing Orcas to spawn non-stop giant squids which can be sold at an insane profit indefinitely
It would be cool to see you incorporate more of these tycoon games! I know your primary focus is RCT but it’s cool to see you figuring out the mechanics of these games and presenting it in a similar way to the RCT videos. Thanks dude!
Ski resort tycoon
Marcel Vos: Tycoon tycoon :P
Transport Tycoon would also be real cool
Industry Giant Tycoon II please!
I used to have Fast Food Tycoon and it was the weirdest game ever. I'd be very curious to see Marcel play it xD
I think at one point my older sister told me that guests would leave your park if they've seen every animal (similar to how people go to zoos in real life) but I guess that wasn't true lmao
I have been told that too by some Zoo Tycoon experts. They don't understand how the swing makes such a big difference.
@@MarcelVos "Alright, I´ve seen everything there is to see here, I´m going home!"

Marcel is going to single handedly bring about OpenZT1
Is this really a Zoo at this point? Or just a Mexican themed restaurant where the owner has a pet Gazelle for some personal reasons, and owns a giant plot of land? :D
Entertaining video as always, and - though I love RCT - I do enjoy the diversion into videos about other tycoon games.

Rollercoaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon, two games from my childhood. Loved the expansions for Zoo Tycoon that added aquatic animals, pre-historic animals, and ice age animals. If you really wanted to, you could make your own Jurassic Park.
Despite the conditions, the gazelle was still quite happy. We could all learn from that.
I still prefer this game over Planet Zoo just like I prefer RCT over Planet Coaster. Maybe its because the modern games are like: Played 5 hours designed a single coaster/enclosure gets bored. Play the Tycoon games 5 hours desiged a whole park and have lot of fun doing so. Maybe its just me.
I agree 100% with you
That's exactly why I love these games so much. You can spend 30 minutes building really basic stuff and you have a small functional theme park or zoo. If you want you can still spend a lot of time on it, but you don't have to to make something nice.
Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster also are just so high maintenance if you have a large zoo you have to check everything all the time
in planet zoo and planet coaster, every single thing is a time investment and wrestling with the unintuitive building controls. it makes doing anything make me feel stressed. making something in rct and zt is just fun. goofing off and enjoying yourself feels like the main goal instead of creating some ultra realistic hyper-optimized simulation and management game. I exclusively play in sandbox bc I can’t be bothered to worry about prices, and find fun in the creativity. somehow I find the more open designs of the newer games more restrictive because of the barrier to entry and differences in time investment.
@@elusivefrog I agree 100%. It gets me bored too quickly because I just wanna put things down and watch them do what they need to do, not manage how much food each and every animal and person gets for how much money
02:48 So a polar bear playing with a ball shrinks in size
It's not a zoo, it's a very successful restaurant with the owner's pet on display.
I'm so excited to see you branching out from RCT content into adjacent games!!! As much as I enjoy the RCT2 videos, expanding the scope of the channel is such a good idea. Keep up the great work!!
Wait, it's that easy to increase the guest limit? The 1000 guest limit was always my biggest issue with the game; there was no reason to expand your zoo when you hit it.
Im so happy you're doing these zoo tycoon videos! I had both games as a kid but i played zoo tycoon way more than rct. Im excited to your explanations on all its quirks!
Seeing how simple and limited the algorithms are that Zoo Tycoon 1 has makes me doubly thankful for how sophisticated RCT’s are. Played ZT1 a lot when I was a kid, but was always a bit miffed about the dumb Maintenance Worker AI, and the lack of an assignment area for them.
Do I have Zoo Tycoon? No (and I wish I did).
Am I going to watch a random CZcams video about how to break Zoo Tycoon? No.
Am I going to watch Marcel Vos break Zoo Tycoon? Absolutely.
Zoo Tycoon is absolutely amazing, man! Give it a try some day

It is amazing just how much simpler the mechanics are in this game than RCT's were.
You could built the path to the side instead of straight. The gazelle and swing with just one fence at the narrow ends of the path, the restaurant at the two tile wide side. It's technically one fence hence one tile smaller.
God this game brings back memories. I remember I once found a guide that showed some crazy exhibit combinations, like you could put ankylosaurus with lions and they would both be happy. Wish I I could find that guide again
3:25 I like to think you saw a real-life restaurant for the first time and are now excitedly explaining them to someone.

I'm half an hour cracking up due to the "fresh gazelle"
I’ve been away from this channel for a while, as while it’s fascinating to hear the various aspects of the early Roller Coaster Tycoon series I don’t have much interest in the series. Spotting this in my feed, however, filled me with glee - Zoo Tycoon 1 was part of my childhood library. It's fascinating!
Yes omg zoo tycoon is such a nostalgic game please play it more!
Marcel is about to drop the animal overview videos where he tells us why the gazelle is actually superior in every way to the T-rex
No way. Nothing tops the T-Rex!
Zoo Tycoon is my SECOND favorite game of my childhood after Roller Coaster Tycoon 2...! So happy you are exploring now this game ! :)
the unreachable tree swing and replacing the gazelle with a "fresh one" made me laugh
I love the fact that Marcel's covering another great sim game from my childhood. Will have to get used to the style and aesthetic of his videos being used on Zoo Tycoon's graphics, though.
This was one of my first computer games as a child and it's still one of my favorite games tbh so I'm so glad it's getting some love. Now if only it was available to play on GOG or something
Knowing that Zoo Tycoon was Marcel's favorite game as a kid after the recent upload of recorded footage of him playing, the answer to "Do you want more Zoo Tycoon videos?" went from "yes" to "Holy crap, yes please!"
I love when games have easily edited config files like that.
Marcel making Zoo Tycoon videos is the only thing keeping me going
You're reaching out to Zoo Tycoon! OMG no way! ♥ Always loved your videos, but I personally never played RollerCoaster Tycoon, so I never really understood what you were talking about :D
Never played this game, didn't even know it existed. But it's a Marcel Vos video, so I know I'm going to be entertained, and I was. Keep up with the good work!
I really appreciate your videos. I played all of these tycoon games when I was young, and was frustrated by these hidden parameters and finally got stuck on a map that I attempted over and over. I probably didn't have any entertainment because I was spending all the money on animal habitats.
Swing: *exists*
Guests: Shut up and take my money!
I enjoy the way you test and explain things in games. Doesn't matter what game. Keep it up.
No amount of guest-bullying could prepare us for the animal abuse we're going to see from now on
Do the maintenance workers always go to the same corner? I'm wondering if the pathing algorithm has a quirk where the workers will prefer to go in one direction, similarly to guests in mazes in RCT.
I wonder if they have a habit of ending up at 0,0
The animal happiness bar is such an important part of Zoo Tycoon. Like there's no reason to feel bad about the Gazelle in the 2 tile exhibit, just check his happiness stat, he LOVES it.
This Gazelle must be from Japan. Being happy living in a closet. That thing looks like a 4 tatami space max.
We are entering the Marcel Vos Tycoon Multiverse. What's next: School Tycoon? Mall Tycoon?? (Idk those are the only other two I really invested much time into as a kid)
I didn't know restaurants also regenerated bathroom need, but it makes sense^^ thx for sharing!
LOVED this game growing up.
In ZT2 you can walk around the park on first person with a gun and shoot animals with it. It's a tranquilizer gun, but it's still awesome
The fenced off swing has me rolling. Never change
I love how you phrase the ridiculousness of the reality of the game. It's super funny
First Rollercoaster Tycoon and now Zoo Tycoon, Marcel's bringing my early 2000s PC gaming nostalgia back💜
This is very reminiscent of a junky tourist-trap place you might still see in remote parts of the United States. It's nothing more than a crummy overhyped restaurant, with a single swing (no one can use it of course) and a single pathetic animal to be stared at. I love it!
That mexican restaurant with a pet gazelle seems to be worthy enough to visit.
"Bought a fresh gazelle" is a sentence I never knew I would hear ever in my life.
Oh hey I remember this game. It was on the local library computer when I was a kid. I remember noticing the steadily updated saves it had and ruined them all by making peepee enclosures and getting everything burned to the ground before overwriting the saves. Good times.
Come eat at the good value prairie dog restaurant with the world's most interesting immortal gazelle mascot and un-swingable swing!
Wait, a prairie dog restaurant that handles the food/drink/bathroom/rest needs of a thousand guests in a day? Marcel built a Buc-ees
🤣
To be pedantic, the mascot of Buc-cee's is a beaver, not a prairie dog, but you still make a good point. 🤣
I am so happy zoo tycoon is getting coverage now! This is the game that sent me on an absolute tycoon addiction in my early youth leading me to all kinds of weird titles like moon tycoon and monopoly tycoon
I really like your videos giving another game a spotlight like you do with RCT. It adds a good amount of variety :)
Yes! More Zoo Tycoon! The music from the carousel at the end is absolutely nostalgic. Unlike most others, Zoo Tycoon is actually the game that got me into Tycoon games.
"Pause the game, put a new one in, and un-pause. They won't know the difference."
Is this how my goldfish lived for ever, or the school hamster?
but yh, great vid. I enjoyed your RCT content and enjoying your Zootycoon stuff~
Oh man, this brings back memories. Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2 were my entire childhood. I wish they were easier to get lately, because I’d love to play them again. ZT really needs the OpenRCT2 treatment.
That's no zoo, that's a restaurant with a Gazelle.
That maintenance worker wandering off into the sunset brought back some funny memories from my childhood. This game and RCT2 were some of my first experiences with video games.
Come visit the Prairie Dog Cafe, we have a gazelle outside.
honestly, given my frustrations with getting guests to keep their needs up in these tycoon games, only giving them 2 tiles of path so they can't get lost on the way to the restaurant seems like a godsend of a strategy
The secret Yellow Brick Path which gives 10 happiness and zero upkeep was a good choice for the path.
Love the extreme qualifications clarifying not every guest is instantly happy if your animals are happy. I remember playing this game growing up and I can't tell you how many guests would be maximum angry with complaints like "Zebra 23 is overjoyed 🤬"
brb setting up a kickstarter for a killer restaurant idea.
If I were the fire marshal I'd be pissed
I remember playing this game but I thought I dreamt it up.
Okay, as someone who's watched your channel for a long time, and plays more ZT than RCT, your RCT stuff was neat, but this, this is amazingly useful!!!
Marcel, I have a very important question for you: when you introduce yourself, do people ever ask if you have shoes on, or say something to that effect? Or call start talking about your pet lint named Alan? Because I think I'd have a hard time not doing so.
Love the Zoo Tycoon 2001 content :)
Someone came up behind the gazelle, gagged it, dragged it off, and threw down a new one in the blink of an eye.
That was a fun game. I didn't play it anywhere near as much as RCT2, but it's cool to see someone talking about it. I thought I was like the only person that played Zoo Tycoon lol.
So who's more in a cage, the gazelle or the zoo guests? Deep stuff!
Nice work sir, rock on!
I’ve been waiting for you to do this game for years! So glad it’s finally here.
I have adopted a very strict like policy a few months ago, and you sir just got one of them!
> Plains Zebra 1 has died of old age.

6:25 Aah, nothing's better than a fresh gazelle!
It’s less of a zoo and more like a gimmicky restaurant with a cover charge. I could almost see it working in real life with a live alligator.
Haha one of my old favorite games, love it, would like to see more.
I used to deal with wandering staff by trapping them near the exhibits with rocks/water. Maintenance workers are still tough to manage though, since sometimes it seems the one on the opposite side of the park with no valid pathing would get assigned a task, instead of the one standing right next to it...
swingland ft. Swingland Tavern and stange horse. park motto: "why are you all here"
If you made a video on how zoo tycoon mechanics work I would definitely watch! As a kid the whole thing was just a complete mystery to me and I struggled to make profit with 50 different kinds of animals and dozens of stalls xD
I fucking loved the original Zoo Tycoon! So much nostalgia!
