    People complain about movies way too much... It's too easy to forget what a herculean task it is to complete something, even something as seemingly simple as a 10-minute short film. Good job, Simon. It's cool that you were able to get such a large crew together too!

    • @syekbe
      @syekbe Před 8 lety +4

      I couldn't agree more with you. It's easy to criticize the flaws in any film projects, but many people here, who have made harsh criticisms without offering constructive criticism, don't realizing the effort behind any short film. I give Simon credit for taking the steps in making his dreams a reality weather he spends $100 or a $1000. He just make things happen and those are the ones who eventually get far in life.

    Hi Simon. Hey, I'm no better than you but I can't help but make a suggestion. I personnaly always go in person when looking for locations and i don't remember being refused a single time, even when we where sure we would never get it. You know what they say; you can't make a sale on the phone. Means you gotta be face to face. And booking a location is selling the idea that it is a cool thing to be part of this film. I thought i could share a what has been a good way of doing things for me. Just saying. Keep up the good work!

    • @DSLRguide

      +Symon Says TV one of the problems with filming 3hrs away from where I live was that a lot of it had to be organised by phone / email. I think you make a very good point about the value of face-to-face :)

    Simon you reminded me of my film shoot 2 years ago, being so tired but so excited, so emotional, yet so focused. Going to sleep and waking up in the middle of the night typing on the phone an idea or a work around or a solution. You got my love and passion for this back, Simon, thank you. I haven't touched any of it for 2 years. I love that you share with us how real the struggle is for independent low budget filmmakers. But you know what, we are the most creative people because those with the big dollars don't need to think about solutions and work arounds, yes they might win the box offices, but they rarely win the hearts of the people they want. I can't wait to see your film Simon. Congratulations on your hard work and dedication

    Simon is the kind of guy that will end up getting to dirrect the $100+ million movies some day. I know so many people that will blow 90% of a budget on renting red cameras, cine glass and other camera gadgets and end up using people who cant act, no one who knows audio, and trying to cram a week of shooting into a couple days to afford the rental period. Proportionately this is what a larger budget film would look like, gear being one of the lowest expenses. Great film and keep up the good work!

    Watching this video made me realize how tough planning a short film and shooting it along with finding crew, locations, props, budgeting, and the time to film can be.
    As an aspiring actor, writer, and filmmaker, I've developed a lot of respect for film making as I learn more about the process behind it and what else is involved, since I'm writing out stories along the way and have recently graduated from acting school with plans to make my own content.
    Props to Simon for making this video and the other videos related to making short films, how to start a short film project, and the importance of focusing on Pre-Production and working things out along the way with his personal insights.

    One my favorite teachers stated that stress is what pushes us to do more. "Stress is good"

    Wonderful snapshot of pre-production on a low budget shoot, Simon. Good on you for learning to simply trust and not give up - probably the biggest lesson of all. No film without faith. My short starts its shoot on Saturday, and while problems come up all the time, they just get sorted out, even if one has no idea how.

  • @kurtlindner

    Great one.
    Your last take away is probably your best -once you get experience with unexpected stress it helps you grow to a point where you don't freak out, but look at a situation rationally. There's a problem -ok, what resources do we have to fix this problem as best as possible, act.

    I think you got a little too excited in making your first film which explains why the story wasn't that solid. You've concentrated more on hiring crews, auditions, wardrobe, and equipment and less on the storyline itself. No offence but, I really think that you can do a lot better than that.

    • @ChristianRuppelt
      @ChristianRuppelt Před 8 lety +40

      +Vincent But that’s the point: Just start doing stuff. Write (or get) a script, shoot it, edit it, find the mistakes you made and start all over again. Don’t work too long on it. The first couple of scripts / shorts / movies are going to suck anyway and you will learn the important things.

    • @syekbe
      @syekbe Před 8 lety +4

      Oh come on! Shut the fuck up! No project is ever perfect even big Hollywood pictures. It's all about making it happen weather is "good" or "bad"...there is no such thing as perfect -- actually the only three movies that came to perfection were Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, and Mad Max (2015 version). Anyway, Just get out there and take a chance and be creative. I bet you don't have the BALLS and talent to make something nearly as good as Simon's short film you jealous jerk!

    • @syekbe
      @syekbe Před 8 lety +3

      +Vincent Fair enough. Not trying to be cool. I respect Simon so much for trying and going after his goals whether good or bad. I got a little carried away in my response to your reply. Had you said something like "nice try for being your first short" and then followed by your reply, I would have had more respect for you. Didn't you think he made decent effort for being his first short? I know the effort behind creating something big or small. But the point: just take a chance and just do it and not worry about it being perfect. You will get better as you learn from your mistakes. Yes I agree all movies take criticism. I'm sorry that I was harsh on your response and thanks for the reply 👍

    I sometimes wonder if you know how truly helpful these videos are. In fact you may single-handedly be pushing me to actually follow through with a short, simply by posting these videos. When there are unknowns beyond my counting I tend to get overwhelmed and lose motivation. In fact I could lose motivation at the drop of a hat. So when I see these, and some of those unknowns laid out in front of me, I start to feel better about the whole process. I've had an idea in my head for a long time and I think its a good place to start, so I wanted to say thank you for giving me the courage to get the ball rolling. Keep up the great work Simon. I believe you are right, but for me motivation has never been there. And my work ethic is nearly non exsistent (I say nearly cause I've been practicing 😊). So when I even start thinking about the intricacies of filmaking I just sort of give up. But you make it so concise, write it all down, never letting your mind do all the work. That is a skill I want to learn, and you're helping me do it. I cant thank you enough. Oh by the way congrats on your short!

    So much work behind the scenes. Things you take for granted when you netflix and chill. Very eye opening and gives me so much to think about when I finally get out and put something in motion. Thank you for sharing. Can I ask what the budget was on this?

    Some really invaluable tips. Do you have a picture available of the main persons on set? Would be useful for shooting in the future.
