I was debating on hanging my generator the same way you did. I opted for getting a 900 lb rated hitch installed instead and made a custom hitch-mounted generator carrier for my Yamaha 4500. I like the box idea for sure, mine is a tray style with a fitted tarp cover.
If you built and sold something like this, I would consider buying it. I'm not much of a welder myself. Even if you were just to sell the plans, I'd pay one of my friends to weld it.
Great job! Really like this mod. I'd like to see a small door in the front of the box that allows the propane adapter to be connected to a tank sitting outside the box but still remain locked. Also a mount from the trailer hitch instead of the bumper.
I was just thinking about doing something similar to this and wanted to find something on CZcams lol, well here we go! Nice work man 👊🏼 I’m totally taking this idea. Thanks for sharing!
Great idea.... I'm curious how well the mounts and the bumper will hold up? Even though it's under 4 feet overhang you should still add some reflectors or reflectorized tape. just sayin.
Love the box. Can you share the basic building plans for it? I think I can make also by repurposing a swamp cooler unit? I like the opening makes the whole thing so clean and functional.
Looks like you did a great job! The only worry I have is adding that much weight to the rear of my trailer, and attempting to keep 10 - 15% trailer weight on my tongue. I have a 3000 watt inverter generator, so it's small and quiet but still weighs @ 100 lbs.
@@pierreverdoni it will remove tongue weight however. For the 100 lbs you put at the very back of your trailer, the tongue weight diminishes by approximately the same. If your tongue weight becomes too light your trailer will begin to sway and can begin to have the tail wag the dog so to speak...
That reminded me of securing my 9 inch crt tv down in my sleeper when I was driving truck. There was a tv compartment in the sleeper and a strap similar to yours to secure the tv. Never the less I was going through Louisiana one time that was quite a bumpy experience on I 10. Somehow the tv got loose and crashed to the floor. Thankfully it still worked but when I got home I went to Academy and bought an orange kick ball which was about the size of a soccer ball and I also bought a hand held pump with one of those needles for inflating the kick ball. Next time I went out in the truck I deflated the kickball enough so it would sit on top of the tv and then inflated it enough to fit against the top of the enclosure which helped hold the tv snugly within the tv enclosure. I f you any problems with your generator getting loose I would consider getting a couple of solid rubber bungee cords in addition to that strap to help secure it and keep constant tension to hold it down. Just a suggestion for what its worth.
This is great thanks! Was thinking of doing the same thing on my trailer but people say it affects the handling when you have weight on the rear, going to look at the stromberg tray
nice job. I need to find out how much weight My Rv can carry back there before going ahead. In the past at hunt camp we always just made a box with 2 inch blue insulation and left the exhaust side open and that worked well. Was wondering if you considered insulating that box with a 1 inch foam inside.
Hello, I see it's been almost 3 years now, so how well are your mounts holding up? I am pondering on how to mount my generator on my travel trailer. Thanks.
Good job... I just came to look because your video showed up on my predator install video analytics saying it was being recommended to people watching your video.
Thank you sir , I have been searching for a video to teach me this. I want to run a generator while my Rv is moving to power the roof mounted A/C. Where did you buy the box! Thanks a million just subscribed.
how big are the louvered vents like couldn't a scumbag just pry off the vent tin snip the hole a tad larger an run off w/ the genny? I'm planning a front mounted steel gen box w/ side vents but I need to pull start my yammie. good tip on the cord, but the scumbag will proballey cut it an run off w/ it.
You sir Should have started the generator so we could hear how loud it is in the box, it might need to be insulated with something to help with the noise but we wouldnt know that because you didn't start the generator
How did you assemble the box and where did you get the materials? Looking to make something similar so we can have the generator running and not worry about it getting stolen.
Ok... very nice... but what about the box itself? where did you get that from? You have a link for everything else but the box which is the main item....
Great job! I just purchased a 3500 watt inverter generator for my travel trailer. I have a 300 lb capacity hitch receiver. I think your design could be adapted.
We have used the czcams.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
@@todd9241982 I bought a 20 amp ac to dc transformer of eba y for 20 bucks and it runs the dual 10 inch 12 volt fans on my gen. box one blows in and one out the gen. does not rev from pluging in in so it does not use many amps.
I’m in florida what place can I go to so they can create this for me? I am a woman so I have no clue how to do this! Any suggestions as to where I would go to have this done for me?
Bob Earl there has been no bend or sag in the bumper. Since this setup doesn’t bounce or move like a bike rack would, it hasn’t caused any damage while towing down the road.
Help me understand why you are running the generator while driving down the road? I’m a full timer with a 2018 Bighorn 5th wheel. I have a 5500 Onan Cummins LP and don’t need to run it while towing. Curious?
Wayne Hurley I have never ran it at a campsite but I’ve been inside the camper while it has been running and never noticed any vibration, but I never really was at the rear of trailer while running. I typically run the generator while traveling down the road for my dogs.
Todd how can I get the schematics on this box? I'd live to build this. That's my exact generator too so I know it will work. Awesome build and thanks for sharing!!👍🏻
I really don't have any official schematics on it. It was just sketched out on paper. However, the dimensions are 27" wide x 25" deep x 22" tall. The lid is made 1/2" bigger. I used 16" x 16" HVAC vents for the sides.
Keith Burns very true, but Lippert Components told me that the bumper is rated to carry 200 lbs and I’ve never experienced trailer sway with this setup.
Looks good now a little red and white safety reflective tape around the box and bing .....good to go also have you thought about the gas to LP conversion for your generator. I’m sub in right now
I like the reflective tape idea! I'm going to look into that. I did consider the LP conversion, but I wouldn't have had enough start up wattage that I needed. That's why I stuck with gas. Thanks for the idea.
Tree City Travelers any T/A would have the tape some Pilot Flying J may have it .I just thought of it because I’m just a trucker and I work too much 😄😄
Ronald Phillips it is an electric start. I only have to use the pull cord if the battery fails, which has never happened yet. The battery is located inside the generator itself by one of the side panels.

I have a machine shop here that is willing to do the same for $300 (materials included). I like the size of the box you have as it leaves some room. Thanks again,
No vibration that I’m aware of. If it sat on a cargo carrier, you would naturally have some, but this is directly bolted to the arms. I’ve never had an issue with the generator running during transit. I also used a ratchet strap over top the generator to keep it from moving as well.
i would add some sort of vibration damper on the bottom of the box to help keep the vibrations modifying sound into the trailer. also the bottom of the generator too. every little bit helps.
Every Generator BOX Must have an Exhaust fan To Move Hot 🔥 air out. It's a must
Great idea! Something to consider noise deadening material on inside flat panels and not sure if fan is water proof
Line the inside with rock wool. It’s a fireproof insulation that absorbs sound really well.
I’ve never thought of that. I will definitely try that out. Thank you for the fantastic idea!
