  • GRWM De-influencing My Bookshelf: is it Possible?
Hey! I felt like a chatty GRWM. Come hang out with me. I know you all voted for an F/F dark romance discussion but it's such a complex topic, I need a whole script and I haven't felt inspired about booktube recently. Either way, I hope you'll like this discussion about de-influencing trend on TikTok and its applicability to book influencers (bookshelf organization, tbrs, book unhauls and antihauls, booktube consumerism).

    1. What was the least influenced reading experience you've ever had?
    2. How do you manage your physical TBR?
    3. Would you rather buy a book you love or a book that is completely new to you?

How do I tackle my physical tbr? I just ignore it! (my coping mechanism for everything) In general I try not to buy books as much as possible, I use phisical and digital libraries and my parents have a large collection of books at home. I mostly buy ebooks and only after having read their preview. If I had to choose I would rather buy a phisical copy of a favourite instead of giving a chance on an unknown book (I am a very indecisive person and I have a limited budget) In order to make pondered choices I kind of want to be influenced.
Browsing libraries (my mother's, the ones in my area or digital ones) is my least influenced way of choosing books

@@sofia-kf6rh I ignore my physical tbr a lot as well. At this point it’s just a part of home decor😂😂 we’re different in that I would rather buy a book I haven’t read yet (because it seems more practical to me because I can use/read it). Library and someone else’s home library seem the most “de-influenced” from all the options imo (maybe others will come up with other ideas we’ll see)

@@BooksWaffles I am a terribly picky reader so it doesn't seem practical to spend money for new books that I might dnf a few chapters in and I reread books multiple times if I love them so it makes sense for me. But I totally see how it could be illogical and impractical to buy a phisical copy if you didn't have the intention of actually reading the book again

      Makes 100% sense for you

Its so hard to balance mindful consumption with reading what makes you happy
I feel like never being influenced is impossible, but being mindful is the best you can do. There is nothing wrong with being influenced to read something, you’re more likely to enjoy it that way.
I gave away my childhood books to my high school teachers and that was great

That’s pretty smart! I gave my childhood toys to a kindergarten.

I studied Advertising in uni and girl, that is a whole degree about this topic, and what a teacher told us and i never forgot was: If you are alive, you are influenced.

We’re twinning! Fellow advertising degree owner as well. You can never look at the world the same way after getting it😂

This is an interesting topic! 🐢✨️
I think it might be possible to de-influence your reading habits?
I barely buy books without reading the reviews of online readers which are basically influencers. Because I want to read books I'll end up liking. But I tried to read in a certain way which just doesn't work for me but seemed like everyone was doing so I had to try it. Also thinking that you need a favourite classic and / or owning multiple copies of it as a collector. It's something I had to unlearn.
Unhauling videos seems enough though, it's a good place to discuss why you picked up a book - because of FOMO or a favourite content creator (influence).
Also that cup is adorable! I like to work with air dry clay and Fimo (oven baked clay), I still need to try pottery though :)

I think we can also de-influence to a certain degree if we agree that it just means conscious consumerism. I’m not a collector at all, so I don’t get that struggle. I’m actually irritated by impractical things including certain decor like plushies or figurines. Being in a cluttered space for a long while triggers my rage fits😂
I assume any clay work is equally relaxing and creative. The smaller the creation (the more detailed) and more creative imo. I wanna try a pottery wheel as well but I’m not particularly muscular so we’ll see if I’ll be able to deliver anything decent.

I'm like 90% Sure that the whole de-influencing thing is just unpopular opinion rebranded. It's either buyer's guilt or simply a chance to complain about what is popular that they don't like. Most of the stuff i've seen is "Over-hyped thing sucked actually, don't buy it". And with books it's the same, it's people saying "Oh (insert app or influencer) were hyping up this book as the absolute best but it sucks so don't get it" It's nothing new, really, it just has a different name.
Before i found queer book recommendations i would just grab whatever queer book i could find and ohhhhhh some of them sucked. Now, i'm doing a lot better picking up what to read.
I have three separate piles of books. Unread, read, and favorites. My faves have their special spot where i can look at them with heart eyes while promising to reread them while i ignore my unread pile. I reread my faves too often. And like you said, let's not talk about the ebooks, that's a lot more to unpack.
I should only buy books after reading them because i've ended up regretting a few of them. Lucky for me i buy almost exclusively used books so i don't pay the full price for them.

I never replied somehow!!! The trend is definitely just a recycled Popular Things I Hated with new wording.
Same! I have so many queer YA books on my shelves that I'm genuinely not interested in because when I started booktube I needed them all. I lived in a scarcity mindset. I no longer have to and that's incredible.
Second-hand books are the GOAT!! Most of my physical shelf is from second-hand bookshops. I am a big fan!
