I honestly think the reason Bernadette's Rose gets so much hate is because a lot of people's first exposure to her performance was via that horrible bootleg that's been going around from one of the 1st previews. She was still trying to find the character and, truthfully, she wasn't very good. This video is clearly taken after she found her footing in the role and she's extraordinary. You have to release more from this recording. I think it's about time for everyone to see what Bernadette REALLY did with this role.

@@richardmayora1289 I'm sure many didn't and felt she was miscast in every imaginable way. I didn't care for Midler in the role, but lots of people loved her and she seemed perfect for it on paper. I'll let people have that. Different performances will hit different people in different places.

This was mine and my wife’s first Broadway show together in the dead of January 2004-thank you so much for bringing back such wonderful memories for us!!!

MORE PLEASE! Saw this in January 2004 and Bernadette was EVERYTHING. I was sobbing throughout her Rose's Turn and the whole theatre stood to applaud after... she bowed for a LONG time that night. LOL

This production could of been so much more powerful, shame the writer didn't want Sam Mendes to add his touch to it, Peters make-up would of been running by the end, she's playing the role like to focus more on the fact Rose's mother leaving the family damaged her, the break down could of been more like Imelda Staunton's complete melt down, but once again blame Arthur Laurent for not being willing to change, it was only when Patti LuPone and her revival cast made a stand did Laurent refresh the show.

I did get to see Ms. Peters in this. She is my favorite Rose next to Ethel Merman of course. It was a theatre packed week: Avenue Q, Wicked, Hairspray, Bombay Dreams, Caroline or Change & Wonderful Town, starring a very absent Donna Murphy who one could say Ms. Peters replaced on Tuesday nights in "Hello, Dolly!" For "Wonderful Town" I saw the understudy, Linda Mugleston who was excellent. Interestingly she was the understudy for Midler (and Murphy) in "Dolly" she finally gets a turn not understudying in the upcoming "My Fair Lady" ("...I understand. dear, it's all been grand, dear..."
I digress! I did go to New York mainly to see Ms. Peters in "Gypsy" and I loved her. I thought she should've got the Tony even though the excellent Maris Jaret Winokur won for "Hairspray." I preferred Ms.Peters.

@@chocolatesouljah why did Donna miss many shows?

      @@melfortune5855
Unfortunately, she did miss a lot of shows. Around the time there was a fair amount of theatre gossip on why she missed so many shows and if she was showing up. It became underground ‘knowledge’ that she was not showing up for days and weeks but the producers weren’t very forthcoming. Her name was on the marquee, it sold tickets, but many audiences showed up and her understudy was on… CONSISTENTLY!
When some shows have this kind of trouble, they quietly find a stunt replacement, the work they "secretly" work the understudy, and when ready they spring it as an ad campaign. “4 Weeks Only! Paris Hilton in Wonderful Town!”
So at least audiences got a quality, disciplined, and talented performer. Unfortunately, being in that position, was stressful, as it had an air of the last minute-itis, plus carrying a million-dollar Broadway musical, to potentially hostile Donna Murphy seeking audiences, with little real professional recognition, other than having her name on a piece of paper inserted into the Playbill. She was the unsung $hero!
So basically the story I believe is that Donna had vocal problems, there are other stories, such as hidden miscarriages, diva temperament but the story I believe is that she had hurt her voice (hemorrhaged a vocal chord) early in previews and never had proper time to heal. That's why she was out occasionally from the show during the run- giving her voice a rest. She then injured it again and was told that if she didn't take a medical leave, she was risking hurting her voice forever.
Supposedly, the producers asked her to be quiet about it, and they informed the press it was the flu, and that she would be back shortly (knowing she was on medical leave really) and thus succeeded in creating this persona of her as someone who never shows up. I believe after the run maybe a year or more later, Donna Murphy verified “my version” of the story in a New York Times interview.
I will add that Ms. Murphy seems to be doing just fine. She has been on Broadway sporadically but stays busy with television and film.
Thanks for asking, I like theatre trivia banter.

That only happened in the 2008 revival with patti lupone apparently her laughing isn’t to mock her or her dream she’s laughing at the fact that rose didn’t really change and has basically accepted it. Then the latest version with Imelda Staunton where gypsy walks off and roses catches up after waking up to reality and then gypsy holds her close to her signaling that she’s taking care of rose now

I LOVE BERNADETTE. Always have. But -- this scene is so so so sooooooooo poorly directed. It's basically unwatchable IMHO. Read "Mainly on Directing" by Arthur Laurents and you'll see how Mendes tried to butcher this masterpiece.
