Just natural raw talent. Not many drivers can run a nascar race , then jump into a sprint car THEN jump into a late model dirt car and drive the wheels off of it all the while being humble about it.
I mean, Jeff was kind of the same mold of driver. Wasn't a mechanic but when you're a legendary wheelman it doesn't matter if you know how to wrench.
Jeff knew more about the car than people know. Find the interview of him talking about T-Rex
@@chuckboyd1060 Not really. That was Ray Evernham's invention and was quickly banned. Even Jeff didn't get to know those secrets until after Nascar made rules for it. Jeff just knew it was way faster than everyone else.
He’s a racer , pure and simple.
I remember an interview at Bloomington, IN after a sprint car win when he was like 16 or 18 years old saying he didn't understand how the shocks work or how to adjust them...he just got in and drove. He knows nothing about the car. Like Tony Stewart said, "You just plug him into the car and he just drives the wheels off of it."
Many of today’s racers are just like Kyle Larson. They are racers, not necessarily mechanics. Many have come up from other forms of racing. A growing number have cut their teeth in racing simulators and in iRacing. But a growing number of drivers have little to no experience building chassis or motors, or even putting a race car together. And in modern NASCAR racing, these driver have all of the support they could need from a team of mechanics, engineers, and specialists.
Well said.
Kyle Larson does not need to know the technicalese of a care. He just needs to be able to Cliff about it. Jeff Gordon was a master of that. Ray Evernham credits Jeff with being a leader while he (Evernham) looked after the mechanical aspects. I’m sure in certain instances, knowing less as a driver is more.
Teamwork lady.
It's like Dale used to say about Tim Richmond "he had so much talent, he could drive a car, but he so much didn't know how to put it together". He said this in the "Good Old Gods" 1998 50th Anniversary Documentary.
Larson is a great driver
Five Sonoma wins for Gordon
He has people for that
They all do.
Love that driver ❤
I remember a kid back in the 90s and 2000s named Jeff Gordon who was pretty much the same way. Didn’t know much about the car but drove the wheels off of it and got top notch results.
It's simple. He tells the crew chief what the car is doing or not doing and the crew chief makes the changes. He doesn't need to know what spring he needs in the right front or whether they need to raise the track bar. He gives feedback, they make changes. Same on the dirt cars. Seems to be working.
Aside from being a natural talent, a lot of Larsons success seems to come from his ability to remember exact critical details in nearly every moment.
He’s then able replay in his head and learn from both his mistakes and achievements but also from his competitors as well.
it really shows how bad Ganassi was, so much talent, just needed the right ride.
Kyle is the very best at taking what the car gives him at any moment, lap, whatever. He doesn't get bogged down by information overload. The crew implemented their strategy, put their driver in a position to win, and Kyle delivered.
The last time the 5 car did much, was when Terry Labonte was driving it.
Mark Martin had a really good year in it too!
"Ice Man"
What about Mark Martin? He nearly won the 2009 championship in that car.
Kyle Busch won races in the car
It looked like that #5 car "did much" Sunday with K.L. driving. I believe that is 3 in the WIN column so far in 24.
Kyle Larson is a natural wheel man! You don't have to know all about a car to make it go fast!😊😊😊😊
Stay in your lane. It's the key to becoming elite at anything.
Great insight!!
IIRC Al Unser Sr. was also considered the same.
So why was that answer so hilarious? I must have missed something
I missed the hilarious answer also.
Where did anyone say it was hilarious?
@@deelowe3 they obviously changed the title. It said hilarious
Cole Trickle told Harry Hyde he knew nothing about cars in Days Of Thunder.
He said ESPN had excellent coverage. You'd be surprised what you can pick up from that
The best driver I knew said that when you're strapping in it is like putting on your Superman c
Because the days of drivers being knowledgeable about their car and influencing their own setups are over. Engineers take care of all of it now. Back in the day guys like Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace knew and controlled literally every aspect of their cars because they grew up having to do all the work themselves.
No they didn't. They had a whole team working on the car while they were out on Dale's boat. He did before Nascar.
Days of Thunder comes true.
It's basically a gifted INSTINCT. There are bunches of people who are successful who cannot explain what they do well and why...we call them gifted. Experience has shown many that all their education doesn't lineup with expected pay.....or results.
What a stupid question? I mean really, where do they get some of these reporters that cover racing? You see the same sort of dumb questions in other sorts of racing, as well. It's called 'doing your homework' first.
It was a great question actually
Neither did Cale Yarborough. I think that’s why Larson is so good. He doesn’t worry or wonder what setup is under him, he just jumps in and drives it. Although knowledge of race car setups and geometry helped guys like Rusty, Mark Martin, etc., I think it could be a detriment at times. For example, if halfway through a race the driver finds out they chose the wrong spring, gear ratio, stagger, crossweight, etc., it gets in their heads. Larson is oblivious to that stuff and just stands on the throttle.
Jeff Gordon is one of the best, ever. He just had the skills and talent to drive a stock car. Kyle Larson has that skill and and talent, that’s it! There’s no reason to try and understand something you see before your eyes.
You can bet your ass he knows how it works
you load the wagon he’ll haul it
just stand back and watch
Miss you on the track Gordon
I would say 90 % of the drivers in Cup in 2024 have limited mechanical know how. They're are a lot of talented people behind the scenes that are getting paid for that side of racing.
Hes got a good crew chief and doesn't need to know what makes em work. Just tells him what the car is doing. Driver that knows too much will have an opinion on what the setup change is gonna do to the car and may drive it differently.
It's called Raw Tallent. Look at the difference between Bodine and Tim Richmond with Harry Hyde. Bodine thought he knew about cars while Tim didn't know the front from the back. Tim's raw tallent + chemistry with Harry Hyde = Tons of Success.
His Indy experience was a lot of help.
@shaynejenkins446 I wasn't trying to take anything away from Tim. I just wanted to make a point.
Where did you find that lady???
Larson feels what the car can and can’t do, communicates and Cliff makes it happen.
Like it or not if Jeff Gordon says your good folks just better sit up and listen!
This reporter never heard of Tim Richmond
Hes the new breed of driver , compared to the ol' boys of Jeff's age .
Gordon didn't know much about cars either
He knows more than he makes known.
He don't turn wrenches.
I listened to that race on serious exm I don't have cable right now so I can not watch the NASCAR races on television 😔❤❤❤
Kyle knows more about the car than you guys could ever dream of
Driver and mechanic are two very different things, so it's kind of a dumb question. It's kind of like asking someone how they can know how to run so fast or be such a great athlete yet not know anything about biomechanics.
Kyle’s job isn’t to know about the car. His job is to drive it to failure and tell them what he needs to drive it even further.
He can tell you how his car is handling lap for lap
Thanks For defending him. LoL. Jeff❤
He’s not there to work on the cars he is there to DRIVE them
I mean I don't know shit about cars too but I know how to drive one.
Kyle's wife has said he can get more out of a race car, no matter how it is handling, than anyone else.
You still have to communicate what the car is doing
If WE did it we would go to jail
Jimmy Clark wasn’t a great mechanic, yet he drove the snot out of every car he got into and raced, including NASCAR. Driving talent is driving talent.
Kyle Larson does own a sprintcar and midget team. I don't know how well he knows the cars, but a lot of sprintcar and midget drivers help out their crews in the pits. NASCAR is a different story.
He does own a few cars as trophies and not driven anymore. But he does not own any teams anywhere. He owns the high limit dirt series with Brad Sweet.
@@shaynejenkins446 According to Wikipedia, Larson and Justin Marks co-owned a sprint car team from 2013-2015. Larson then became the sole owner and he shut it down in 2020. Larson also owned a dirt midget team from 2019 thru 2021 in which he won several major events. I should have said "he used to own..."
The 90s Mbappé of Nascar.
Some of these people ask the dumbest question. Don’t know how they keep their jobs
Kyle dont need to know how the watch is made. Just tell him what time it is.
Jeff Gordon was the original California Larson lol cars no driving them yes lol
What a lazy question, does she think that all Larson is doing is driving around enjoying the view? He’s totally focused on maintaining the fastest line, watching where he can take advantage of other drivers mistakes while not making any himself. Some reporters are just totally clueless, let’s let them try and drive over 95mph for several hours inches away from the competition.
Of course, Larson had to ask alot of questions while in the Indy car , it was his first time driving/racing that type of car !! If he didn't ask questions how was he suppose to learn ???? DUH!!! She irked me!! Haha!!
What an insulting question. The reporter doesn’t seem know anything about racing so how does she justify reporting on a race?
He a RACE CAR driver reporter….he is not a Crew Chief.. duhhhhh
Some of the best musicians can't even read music. You don't need to understand the science behind it if you were made for it
Another stupid question from a reporter. We had many drivers that were good behind the wheel and communicated well with the team but were not mechanical.
Like a successful marriage.......good feedback.......yes ma'am ........yes ma'am.......etc 🤣
Just people trying to get an angle on someone....usually to downgrade them. Never made any sense.Old ironheads....
Is there one team that has a driver who makes decisions on strategy? Isn’t that the crew chief’s main job? What a dumb question.
Ask Jeff he doesn't either
It does seem like a valid question that makes common sense, until you think of a pilot or a railroad engineer.
Do you think a pilot of an F 35 could do even the most minor amount of maintenance on the fighter jet? No, he could not.
And then there’s astronaut that can fly spaceships, but don’t know how to build a rocket.
Bad comparisons.
@@shaynejenkins446
They’re bad comparisons because pilots know how to repair their jets and their airframe? And railroad engineers know how to repair or install the transmission between their generators and their electric motors?
He should have asked her if she's a good cook! Probably not.
"Kyle Larson is arguably the best race car driver on the planet"...here we go again ! another american thinking the US is the entire planet. lol
Mommy Jeff says he's good he gotta be good at what being a sellout
Jeff Gordon is fake as hell!!
Cheaters
😂
ok cry baby
The reporter certainly wasn't very bright, obviously.
JUST SHUT UP AND DRIVE 💞🤠❤️😽💜 WYOMING 🇺🇸💞
