Mountain biking is expensive, so when you can save money and get similar performance, why not save hundreds of dollars? That's where companies like MicroSHIFT come in - they sought to build a high-quality drivetrain that goes toe to toe with the big S component manufacturers. I've been running this drivetrain on all my mountain bikes for over 8 months and it's time to give my honest review. While I'm not sponsored by MicroSHIFT and bought my first Advent X groupset, they did pass along two additional sets for me to try out.

    Firstly I don't:
    - have a nagging significant other.
    - children
    - own a house
    - any other serious financial responsibilities
However, the older I get, the more I appreciate reasonably priced quality gear like this.

My son and grandson both run the Advent X drivetrain and so far they have been flawless. I am even more of a cheapskate than they and I have been running an LTwoo A7 groupset which I paid like $60 for and also have had no issues. The LTwoo has no clutch, however when I use the park tool basic chain length calculator I find that chain slap is pretty much eliminated anyway. In low gear it really stretches the derailleur out there!

Thanks for the heads up about this shift group! I tellya I am disappointed with SRAM's NX derailleurs. My first one got play in it after a few months use, so it would not shift properly. Had to switch over to a GX derailleur. Then I had NX on a demo bike one time and the derailleur bent itself up after 1km JRA - too much stamped steel in the NX garbage. Better off with this AdventX stuff I bet!

Distribution/supplier issues (not too mention COVID-19) have kept this company from really taking some market share away from SRAM and Shimano.

I have a 2010 Kona Kula Supreme - an amazing XC hardtail at just over 23 pounds with a Rockshox SID World Cup and 3x9. The group set needs replaced, and I am wrestling around with what to use, and Microshift is a contender. This bike would be my one-bike-quiver crossover light PNW trail/urban bike. Nice review Josh, it's def something I'll most likely pickup for my Scout or next ride! Rather save the money on a drivetrain & put money into other parts, which will most likely save more weight overall (if that's a concern). I've been running an old XT 10spd with a 32t up front & max 42t in the rear that shifts meh, so anything will feel better to me! Might have to take the new Evil for a spin....for testing purposes, of course ;)

I love mine. Doesn’t shift very well under load(think hard gear pedaling uphill and shifting to an easier gear) so be nice to it and it’ll work. The shifter doesn’t feel as clicks and responsive as sram but who cares. If I case a jump the chain sometimes ghosts shifts up a gear. I did have my cranks lock up on my once because the chain cog between the frame and the cassette. I added an E13 chain tensioner/guide. This drivetrain was more for long fire road climbs and then descents.

It sure as heck beats shelling out the cash for 12 speed and then possibly having to upgrade the freehub body.

All the half price deals on top tier 10speed chains awaits you if you go 10sp. I just had my first top chain and gotta say you can easily feel the difference in quality. Even the quicklink in KMC is much tighter and stays that for much longer, than on their budget chains which I rode a lot. Would love Advent X for myself, bodging Deore 10speed with XT shifter is nice, but the shifting ain't perfect on 11-46 cassette.

To be fair, M6100 or even SLX is not that much more in price, but quite a bit heavier and the 12 speed use microspline, which I see as a negative too.
And yeah, I got me some Horizon V2 wheels. Not super budget, but pretty crazy engagement for that price range. I think that will serve me better than a little better shifting feel.

Looks great! Don't really see why you'd want to get something better, at least for most riders. Even Deore is quite a bit more expensive right? That beeing said, Deore ofers a better upgrade path so I guess that's one point in favour of the bigger brands.

I just sold my SRAM 1x12 NX/GX combo drivetrain and replaced it with the Advent X. Only put 10 miles on it so far but I am very very impressed. I think it feels better than the NX/GX combo, especially the shifter. I find the shifter to feel *very* good, lots of feedback and click which I like. Also it just feels better on my feet than the old 1x12 rig, potentially because it's a steel cassette? And lastly, the indexing between gears is great-- you don't have to cycle through those gears you don't really need on a 12 speed, you just shift once or twice and are in the gear you probably want to be in. I'm stoked on it.

I'm feeling this video.. just bought a sync'r cause 50% off new.. no brainer.. I was bummed to see it had a 12 speed Sram SX drive train though. As a newbie mountain biker, why did the community get away from 2 and 3x drive trains for simplicity just to go to a 12 speed that's finicky and arguably will have more issues (already seeing issues with mine). I would have have preferred a durable 8-10 speed with a 48-51 high end. Maybe I can buy the AdventX and sell the Sram gear to pay for the swap ? We shall see

This creates some interesting comparisons. The new Shimano Deore 10 speed may be slightly less expensive with an 11-46 cassette, the new Deore 11 speed is about $25 more expensive with a 11-51 cassette. This is for the RD, Shifter, Cassette combo, so same parts as the Advent X. I also wonder if Microshift is looking into a 12 speed that could run on an existing 12 speed cassette such as sunrace or NX Eagle.

Josh, a little help with opinion, please.
I currently have an X-7 on a 1x, and the X-7 isn’t compatible with the heating range I need.
I want to swap the SRAM with either the Advent X shifted and RD or the Shimano M4100 shifter/M5120 RD. Without considering the price difference, what are your thoughts on which would be a better performing setup? I plan to use 42 to 48T cassettes (I have more than one set of wheels - one set up for gravel trails, one for hills).
