Making my own ptu drain plug in a 2016 ford explorer!

- Ford really failed on this design by putting the ptu right above the exhaust and no drain plug. Here's how I drilled my own drain plug to help this process by a ton! I used a 7/16" drill bit (with a smaller bit for a pilot hole), a 1/4" npt tap and a 1/4" npt plug. I used some 75/140w fluid for the main part of it! This is my first time ever doing a video like this so it's not a master mechanic video and just me showing how I did it! Feel free to leave any tips or feedback below!
I've seen other videos while in this process flush with brake cleaner and blow out with air hose. Then fill untill just dribbles out fill hole. As a former machinists for 12 years.. we used a 23/32 twist for 1/2 npt tap..great info on video. Thanks as a owner of a 2019 explorer. Waiting for it to blow up.got 50,000 mile warranty to cover, And replacement units installed, now have a fill and drain plug. I've also heard am's oil is best for the thermal deflection, because this p. T u is wrapped around exhaust and converter.
@j.cooper2246 I actually ended up getting some header/exhaust wrap and wrapping up the section of exhaust under the ptu to help keep temps in that area down. After this first initial drain, I drained every 3k miles just to help get all the old stuff out and make sure if there was anything in there I got it all out quickly!
Well done sir! Great video!
Nice work This should extend ptu life.
For reference, the sport and platinum trim explorers from 2016 to 2019 do have the ptu cooler with a drain plug but the temp sensor blocks the fill port. It took ford till 2020 to openly admit the ptu should be serviced around 30k miles cause I'm sure they paid for a lot of replacements under warranty. Heck I've seen someone with a ptu failure under 35k miles 👀 great tutorial btw
That's why I checked the level of my PTU & rear diff. early around 3,000 - 5,000 miles. I was able to pump in 150ml before it streamed out of the fill port of both. I'm lucky that Ford finally realized these things need regular fluid changes and put factory drain plugs in both.
Ford Is Junk.. Sorry just Junk... Terrible Company..
Thank you very much. I have the same year and model. Ive seen other videos, but different years/models. Some with coolers, some with turbos. You showed the exact spot to drill and which tools to use.
Nice job... You the man! 👍
Nice video! It may be a moot point due to the life span of these PTUs, but using different metals can cause galvanic corrosion. I believe the PTU is made of cast aluminum. Do an online search, there are automotive or aircraft grade aluminum oil drain plugs with a magnet.
2013 explorer with 217,000 miles original PTU installed drain plug at 140,000 ,change every 25,000 to 30,000.
DORMAN has built their own PTU which is beefier, has better cooling
AND has a drain plug. $850
!
The Dorman one that is compatible with 2016’s is the 600-239 model, and 1000 bucks, and doesn’t have heat shield or a drain plug.
Which is weird because they have PTUs for the 2007-2015 Explorers that are the 600-234XD model. They’re a little cheaper, comes the heat shield, and a drain plug. wtf?
Hell, Ford couldn’t even spring for a stronger magnet on the fill plug lmao
7/16 inch diameter drill bit (almost 1/2"), is larger than a 1/4 inch diameter plug. I am confused, because the hole diameter would be too large for the plug?!😮
1/4" NPT (National Pipe Thread) is for the size of threads on the outside of a 1/4" inner diameter pipe. Pipe is measured by inside diameter, while tubing is measured by outside diameter. I hope that makes more sense now.
Let the jack down to Level the Auto, complete Drain, then Raise back up!!!
Get a magnetic plug
this
Why cannot the fill plug be replaced with an L shaped adapter that you could connect a heater hose to and run that to the top of the engine bay? Then you could fill from the top. That is what I am going to try on my SHO.
If I'm already down there to drain it, it's pretty quick to fill it. Either way you gotta get under the vehicle lol. And you know it's full when it starts pouring out, if you fill it from the top how will you know when it's full if it can't drip out? There's no dipstick for these
@@tkennedy1020 I would do it based on what the owners manual says it holds.
@jeffreylindley845 but you don't always get all of it out. Overfilling would be harmful to the ptu. The video wasn't about how to fill it anyways. It was about how to make your own drain plug lol. You can fill it however you want I just always like knowing it's filled to the top and no more
@@tkennedy1020 Maybe an ounce or two would remain. That won’t hurt anything.
