- I risked it all to see the new Candyman and I gotta talk about it!
A video essay/movie review discussing some themes in the newest piece of black horror film.
Candyman (2021) is the most recent sequel/kinda reboot to the cult classic Candyman franchise, originally starring Tony Todd as the titular urban legend. This somewhat reimagining of the mythos comes from the mind of director and co-writer Nia DaCosta, and I wanna say that up front because I notice a lot of people erasing my girl from her own movie. She literally is the first black woman to have a number one movie debut, so props to her. I’m interested in what she does for The Marvels. Jordan Peele does have a co-writing cred and produced this under his company Monkey Paw but this is not exactly a Jordan Peele joint.
This version tells the story of painter Anthony McCoy and his art-gallery curator girlfriend Brianna as he investigates a local urban legend as inspiration for an art exhibition. As Anthony dives deeper into the history of the Cabrini Green neighborhood, he unwittingly awakens an evil that had laid dormant for years. The dark force of nature known as...Candyman.

When I was a little kid I saw the original candyman and it traumatized me for a good long time. Up until I built up the courage to watch the 2nd candyman movie and that kinda cured my fear of candyman.
Haven't seen the new one yet but just had to say the original candy fuc.ed me up for months.
This was the opening to the IT tv movie for me. Messed me UP as a kid, was terrified of Pennywise until i got older, more into horror and rewatched, realizing how campy it was lol
@@goldfro bro same, I wasn't gonna mention it until you brought it up. Kinda went in the same way candyman did. I watched the first part of IT and was terrified to watch part 2. Years later I finally got up the courage to watch and it sucked all the fear out.
To this day I'll still randomly say "It's battery acid @$$hole"
It occurred to me recently that, with the new movie, the Candyman actually got everything he wanted in the first one. He had Helen since the end of that film, but now he also got Anthony whom he tried to make into their child.
I had some similar feelings when I saw Candyman (2021), but I think I may have made it harder for myself to see it as its own thing by seeing the original a few days before. I appreciate the insights you have though and I’m curious how you feel about the original Candyman.
this was a dope analysis! i’m in the same boat as you regarding how I feel about horror movies don’t really scare me but I’ll watch it sometimes I think the interesting thing about this version of Candyman is that it tries to straddle being a horror film and possibly a social commentary film it in doing that it kind of is mid on both ends
I like your conclusion about the point of Candyman but I think it’s less about Yaya‘s character not being able to choose to be Candyman and it’s more of a reflection of how the cycle of violence is perpetuated candy man isn’t a savior he’s just another symptom of as you eloquently pointed out of the Hive
dope video bro deff following glad I found you from victory’s channel!
Thanks for watching! And likewise.
I think you’re right on the nature of Yayas Candyman. I think because I may have agreed with some of the violence at the end, I didn’t see it as simply perpetuating the cycle, but of course it is…
@@goldfro what frustrates me sometimes is that if you track history you realize a lot of small progress is just slack in the system kinda? so its hard to tell whether a couple dead cops is the system breaking or we’re they expendable from the start, as a treat for the coloreds lol
I finally understand this movie
This is like the black movies with mikey
Why do they have 7 directors?
