    I have found ARDU is light years ahead of INAV for just about anything fixed wing. On two different wings INAV drilled me into the ground It must have been INAV cause I am A SUPERB pilot LOL!! I am sure it was me but in reality on two separate planes I suffered an unrecoverable tip stall, I only changed the firmware and it has not happened since. I think my luck has just been better with ARDUPILOT, and my terrible piloting was at fault for my crashes with INAV. ARDUPILOT has simply amazed me. I have run a mission from a park bench and programed a landing in front of me. Without touching the sticks it took two steps to recover my plane, Yes I thought it was gonna hit me.

    I'm really happy to see you doing an Ardupilot build, too many folks learn INAV and just stop, not wanting to learn another system. I love INAV, and use it for many of my more basic builds, but if I want to build a serious plane, with all the bells and whistles, I go with Ardupilot. It isn't pigeon-holed into a certain model mix, you have far more options.

    I only switched my F405W in the Dart XL-E to Ardu last week and slowly learning the variables. Still working out how to loosen up the FBWA tune so it doesn't resist me when I want to play in the trees with some mild stabilisation. First issue encountered was failsafe default of Circle mode for 5 seconds before RTL which caused a premature landing when I was low level.

    It is always best practice to power up Ardupilot with the Aircraft Level in Pitch and Roll.....Switch Modes and adjust servos in Manual, Stab and FBWx ensuring servos are neutral at each mode change without movement. Also ensure that you wait long enough for full 3D GPS Fix prior to Flight...Always , trim in manual then perform AutoTune procedure in Pitch, Roll and Yaw......Add Pitot/ Static for optimal stability and performance. Once tuned, just level, boot wait for Beeps, verify controls then wait for 3D GPS before launch ......Good Luck, Enjoy

    *Unbelievable timing!* I just finished my first Ardupilot build last weekend and put it on (of all things) an AXON! 🤣🤣🤣 using an old $13 Omnibus F4 Pro. It is SO COOL!
    One of my toughest challenges was getting those 6 modes on 1 switch (I used weights and logical switches, basically) and I looked to my old friend Andrew's channel (cuz I was sure he had done it at one point, but ....GOOSE EGG! 😂). Another cool thing about the ardupilot setup is I put some telemetry radios on it so I can execute waypoint missions and watch it live on the Laptop in the field. You HAVE to try that - it's a kick! (and the telemetry radios are really cheap). I am just delighted with it.
    Oh and btw, Amber will indeed say FBWA, FBWB, Auto-Mode, Loiter, etc (pretty much every ardupilot mode) but I'm sure you knew that.
    As usual, absolutely love your work Andrew, and don't forget - I'm still planning to move to Australia someday and live in your shed ! 😊

    If it's any consolation my attempt to switch from MissionPlanner to QGroundControl made things too difficult to bother with, so well done I say. I like that there is a multi-platform alternative in the works, but so much work has gone into MP that making an equivalent is a pretty long road yet.
    btw I don't think you should be trimming anything in your radio at all. Just leave all the trims in the center, because that's your input to the flight controller (ie. if roll trim is non-center then auto-level will not be level, acro will constantly roll etc). As long as you calibrated the accelerometer the plane knows when it's level, if the GPS and baro are working it knows when it's climbing etc., so no trimming should be necessary. This likely means you'll not be able to fly hands-off in manual mode, but I mean, it is manual after all.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  Před 3 lety

      My trimming was purely pushrod length adjustment, I actually disable radio trims for INAV and Ardupilot. My Manual was way off for some reason. More testing required, which is the fun part for me.

    You don't need all those modes, manual, FBWA and autotune are enough for now. Just got to the QGC bit, Mission Planner is coming to Android soon, better to set up aircraft in MP and use autotune to nail the PIDs.

      Actually you don't have to do the complicated 2-switch flight mode switch setup. a) If you only need 3 modes, you can just enter each of them twice in Flight Modes and use a single 3-way switch. b) You can put flight modes on channels/switches directly using RCn_OPTION (n=channel), for example RTL. / OSD font can be changed, yes.

    Don't use trims! You should have levelled the plane before powering up, your IMU calibration is out.
    Also, if you used Windows (I know...) and Mission Planner you'd be able to set the OSD via the GUI.

      @@richardhallyburton I think, you are right, the AH line is off calibration and the reason being, IMO, that the system was powered on, while not being level. There may be a mechanical misalignment in the aileron set up, but the problem with miscalibrated gyro is still there as well.
      You can hear, at around 4:35, Andrew says "tilts to the left for some reason", while autopilot tries to level the plane to a wrong (tilted to the left) AH line.
