Lyrics:
She sits alone by a lamp post
Trying to find a thought that's escaped her mind
She says Dad's the one I love the most
But Stipe's not far behind
She never lets me in
Only tell me where's she's been
When she's had too much to drink
I say that I don't care
I just run my hands through her dark hair
Then I pray to God, you gotta help me fly away and just
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be, let her be
This morning I woke up alone
Found a note standin' by the phone
Saying maybe, maybe I'll be back someday
I wanted to look for you
You walked in, I didn't know just what I should do
So I sat back down and had a beer and felt sorry for myself
Saying...
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be, oh
Last night I tried to leave
Cried so much, I could not believe
She was the same girl I fell in love with long ago
She went in the back to get high
I sat down on my couch and cried
Yelling, "Oh mama, please help me"
Won't you hold my hand and...
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be
Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing, if it eases all her pain
Let her go, let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be, oh, let her be

Look at all us 40+ year olds thinking about a better time.
If you have ever loved someone with every fiber of your being, yet can’t save them from their own self destruction, then that last verse hits you right in the gut.

Hootie and the Blowfish, one of the best bands of the 90's IMO.
I have to agree with you on that. The 90s had the best rock music.

@@martinkreps9946 And 80's.
@@BrendaLee381 Oh yeah, the 80s had the best rock as well! I agree 100%!

I liked them back in the day, but wasn't crazy about them, too. Now that I'm older... Darius Rucker has a voice that can just cut you to your core.
You can say that again
Actually, you're just nostalgic for the 90s because things got so comparatively bad afterwards.
Yep.
The 90s caliber of songwritting be it ballads, rap, r&b, metal, rock, alternative is just a chasm of separation from todays lyrics. The songwriting is just poetic, real, from the heart, and that is why it transcends time and still applies today - and it will still resonate 20 - 50 years from now.
Very true!
I've been listening to this since it first came out. I'm 60 years old. It doesn't matter, the ballads of this time period are still the best IMO. GETS YOU RIGHT IN YOUR FEELS 💜
@@cynthiadaniels5126 you have great taste in music!

Music as a whole has lost most of what makes music real. I think technology has made a negative impact on it. Also record labels and greed has fucked it all up.
I dated someone like her too once. Wild, beautiful, reckless, passionate, creative, kind, but also self-destructive. Those are the ones you never forget. An adventure, a roller coaster of passion and emotions. What an experience to learn from as a young man in order to realize what I actually need.
Just went through something similar as a man in my late 20s, and gosh its definitely something. Hopefully in time I can come to grow from it
Went through that with someone when I was in my early 20's. She didn't want to see what was right in front of her and got into shitty relationship after shitty relationship, turned to drugs to cope, and wound up dead a few years later. I'm in my 40's now, and married, and not a single day goes by where I don't think about what might have happened if I tried a little harder, or had the knowledge I have now back then. Some people just don't want to be saved, and that's the sad reality of it all.

Nobody these days wants to admit their faults or their mistakes; they fail to realize that a man's imperfections are the most human part of his soul.

I was a pre-teen/teen during the 90's and couldn't wait to see what the future held. Now that I see how the world and life are, I want the 90's to return. Everything was so much simpler and more peaceful back then.
It was the 80's for me but feel the same."At best, happiness is a fleeting emotion: a sensation to be enjoyed while it is here, however short the visit. Sadness, happiness' ugly twin, has the same fleeting visiting pattern. When sadness visits, we have to endure despite wanting rid of it."

This song reminds me of my kids father. He battled addiction until he passed from it at 30 years old 6 years ago. We were high school sweethearts and was in active addiction then as well. We broke up and got back together many times and he used to tell me he listened to this song when he wasn’t with me and would sing it many times when we were together. It’s hard if not impossible to compete with a bottle, a pill, a line, a needle … for those of us that were determined to try, we learn that when in love with an addict, we’ll never be number one, and rarely even number two in their lives. I myself became an addict to join the misery instead of letting go.
That was some time ago. Although I’ve healed, I still feel others pain in the core of my heart. Peace to all of you. ❤️✝️
This song helped me get over my last breakup. Staring at the waves in the Gulf typing this and reflecting on the lyrics, when a relationship ends and it’s due to the right person wrong time. These lyrics help put things in perspective when every breath is harder to take than the last.
For anyone who's ever loved someone they couldn't fix, the third verse hits you in the gut every time.
You can't create love. Only embrace it ☺️
Embrace change that is the lesson I walk away with
You can only fix yourself and that; not always. Got to take people at their worth and let them walk out if they wish.
Even more so when that verse is about you...addiction sucks!

Me and my dad painted Darius Rucker's home in Charleston SC in 1994.. It was painted yellow with black trim.. My brother died May 14, 2021 of stage four pancreatic cancer. It was brought on by his daily drug use...☹️
@@nathanieldaiken1064 my brother was killed by a drunk driver Aug 21.2012 7 days from his 24Th bday. Still haunts me to this day
Thank you for sharing. I'm very sorry for your loss.
♥️♥️♥️
His voice is amazing ❤
I know he never specifically wanted this, but damn I'm thankful this band existed. This kinda music made my childhood perfect!
This song makes me feel things I can’t describe.
me to but if the sun comes up its all good .
I know the feeling I been there before and be where he is singing about just got out of prison and listen to this song alot
Oh sweet summer child, give it time. Life will force you to feel this pain as we all inevitably do.
I really appreciate all your lovely support and encouragement towards my work. I’m very grateful and thankful to have you as a supportive fan that cares so much❤️😘😍✅💕🙏
💯💯 That says it all for me❣️❣️ He has an amazing voice, feel like he was sending me a message ❣️😢😢😢
I wish we could take our kids and bring them back with us to these simpler times. Oh how I miss the 90s.
E A I do not miss the 90s. That's when I had to become a responsible adult, raise children, have a career or job. It was a very stressful time. I often took comfort in MY music--the 60s-70s.
@@jschuler53 I was still a kid in the 90s, so these were my similar less stressful times. We played outside until the porch lights came on. We played flashlight tag, we went to blockbuster to rent VHS tapes, and we met up at skating rinks on the weekends.
@@EAHorror Things are usually more nostalgic when you are a kid or don't have a lot of stressful responsibilities.
@@jschuler53 yes they are!
My oldest was born in 1990... I love that my girls were raised with awesome music 🎶 and we can still listen, and go to a better place with the lyrics together!
I remember when I was 3 my parents would get in abusive fights and my Dad would sit and listen to this on repeat I understand this more now 20 years later
Hootie and the Blowfish....so beautiful! His voice just sinks right into your chest and unlocks all this emotion. Truly a thing of beauty, will never lose its power.
You've nailed it, Brittney. Right in the chest.
Oops. That's my wife's account. This is her husband's comment.

Brittney's not interested.

This is probably one of the most powerful, emotional songs of the era. The lyrics sometimes brings me to tears. I have always been that guy that would run over 10 good girls to get to that rotten one and I have suffered in the process. Love this song
I feel the same and have done the same. Your comment reminds me of a saying I once heard: "Never ignore a person that loves and cares for you, because one day you may realize that you've lost the moon while chasing the stars".
Amen, brother AJ. Amen.
It’s not just the lyrics in my opinion, but also the way he sings them. So much feeling in his voice!
Properly 70s and 80,s
Yeah. Me too.
Y'all alright with me! Don't let the drugs take you down. We all got your back! Much love.
For anyone who’s ever loved someone tried to fix them and lost them this hits hard!!
after my daughter died this was the story of my life for 2 years I just drank like him and today I'm sober 5 years but this song is still my life
Sorry for your loss kiddo
+Rbrenn Brennn thank you
so sorry for your loss.
God Bless You Carrie. I can't imagine what you have been thru, but one thing I do know is (being that I had been in the program & had 8 years of sobriety & those were the absolute best 8 years of my life), that when you're sober & get to know who you really are & your potential. But, I think the best thing I took from my journey is I now have a spiritual relationship with my God, something I always wanted but could never find. I am sending prayers your way. Just pray & stay sober. God Bless You.
Thank you all for the support and love it really means a lot to me it was the hardest thing I have ever gone threw I don't wish on anyone but for a while I really thought I was dealing with it it was not till I got sober I realized I never felt with it I covered it up
Quarintine gives me a chance to relive my 90's when we would call our friends on land lines , actually knocked on front door to get our friends out to play , blockbuster video was our favorite place to go next to the skating rink on a Friday night. No cell phones , no social media , just raw kid fun. Ahhhhhh, those were the days. Only wish I could relive them.
I often think of my childhood as well. Skating on a Friday night. Pizza and movies all weekend. Memories ill forever cherish.
I been trying learn all those 90s songs on my guitar over the lockdown this was the first one.
Truly
The only comment I’ve ever read on CZcams that has changed my mood all I wanna do now is go back
Yes Edward I was a teen in the 90's born in 79' takes me back!!
Cracked Rear View is still one of my favorite albums in 2024
This song has so much emotion.
I remember back in the 90s I used to get sick of their songs because I felt like they were "overplayed" compared to other songs I liked better...man I was taking them for granted! Give me these guys a million times over the kind of shit that's on the radio now. Time, why you punish me...
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
+boudicca storm i love your name sake, she was a true ass kicker. i think it was pretty shitty what Paulinus did to her after Prasutagus died, i just wish she had gotten to kill him.
I was lucky to know a good thing when I heard it...bought this CD and played the hell out of it. Now when I hear these songs again I get head to toe goose bumps! I loved the 80's but this song makes me miss a special part of the 90's.
+boudicca storm so true! so many bands like that now that I look back...Creed; Nickelback....
+boudicca storm the recorded sound of a chorus of farts is better than most the crap on the radio today
One of the most underrated songs ever
Nothing underrated about it
Let Her Cry
Hootie & The Blowfish
Peaked at #9 on 7.8.1995

Not bad at all
@@agentbong138 ...you just proved Nathan F point. Should have been number 1 for a few weeks. Therefore, it was underrated!
All the other crap you hear at number 1 and this song never got higher than 9...I called that underrated! lol
Steven one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard and one of the best ever IMO. I don’t say that lightly. Extremely underrated.
This is not underrated, very famous in the 90’s. Every band in my country famous or not, they’re always playing this song.
This song should have over a billion veiws, easily
Lisa I can't help but think of you when I hear this. Know you are as beautiful as this song. You deserve peace and love. Don't let yourself or others make you feel it's wrong. I miss you in my life.
Jesus this song for us 90’s kids. Hits us hard when I hear this now. No I’m not crying. I am sobbing!
My heart is hurting so badly. I lost my only child September 9. In Loving Memory of Kaylah Nicole aka Kenny. She went to be with Angels & Jesus. I’m praying so hard for a better 2021 World Love Vision Healing Pain, Shame & Addiction with Music & Art Love Therapy. Thank You SOOO MUCH Precious Great Spirit of Love for hearts like Christ, so no one feels left behind again and no Amazing Artists Lost too soon.

❤one of the best songs ever written
I'm getting old, listen to ol southern rock, the 60s-80s, country, ol R&B, JAZZ like the Queen ETTA JAMES, etc.. I'm 55 & just love good music. This is a GREAT ONE
anyone who didn't like this song has never been balls deep in love. the one that no matter how many years pass and how bad it got you still think about her /him and wonder.
😭
😭😭😭
Lance Saha it still hurts like HELL.
@@jdavis2456 the one you never really get over and truth be told you're not sure you want to.
For me it's my daughter. I sang this to her since she was born. One of her grandfather's favorite bands... May he rest in peace.
This man has a voice that will just make you either laugh, smile, cry or some time all at once
Yes! He is incredible!
I was 29 years old when this song came out, I had a 30 minute commute to my work and I remember the first time I heard it on the radio! Beautiful, it made me cry bc I was in a bad marriage with 2 little kids, and it just resonated with me
I bought this album fresh out of USMC boot camp. What a banger. Darius Rucker is really underated.

This song makes me think of my mom after my dad died. She was a wreck, I was 18, I was a wreck, neither of us were prepared for it, she looked to medications to help her cope with loss and depression, and I didn't know what to do, why she couldn't function, and snap out of it because me and my little brother needed her. Thank God for caring neighbors and friends who saw a problem and helped us all find a better way to cope with loss. My favorite song, but I can hardly listen to it because it is such a painful reminder of that time.
I dont know you but i to fear this very dreadful moment in life so from one stranger to another i love you and i hope everything continues to get better
I'm sorry for your loss. . Hope your doing well and I wish you the best.
I should have noted this in the original post, but this happened 20 years ago, my mother and I still have a tenuous relationship, I've had a hard time forgiving her, but I'm trying. She has been sober for over 6,500 days so she is making progress too. She still has a lot of guilt about that time, we usually just avoid talking about it and make the best of whatever moment we are in.
Ur poor momma, I can't imagine.i hope u are ok . sending love
Brings me similar memories.
Yeah, love when music actually had a meaning to me back in the day.
90s melodic rock will always be fantastic ❤
Hootie & Blowfish were nothing short of amazing back then. Thanks for the good music& lovely memories. Thanks
When it slows down and that guitar solo comes in while he kills it vocally? Is.absolutly.amazing. even today sends chills!
