  • Union leaders say they have "no choice" but to go ahead with this week's train strikes, blaming Government cuts for 'hobbling the industry'. Ministers in turn have accused unions of "opposing progress".
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Thousands of members of the RMT union will join the industrial action, bringing most of the country's rail network to a standstill.

      REALLY? WHY?
The union is bringing this out to the PUBLIC …with only one objective ….to make the politicians look like bad people.
The politicians have no choice but to reciprocate ….talking to the public.
So the precedent has been set ...this is the typical PUBLIC ISSUE …with one party trying to make the other party look like fools.
The people PAYING FOR ALL THIS IS THE PUBLIC, YET the PUBLIC HAS NO REPRESENTATION in the process whatsoever.
Why not change this and allow the public to express their opinions/feelings ….after all, IT IS THEIR MONEY AT STAKE HERE.
Let's start this process with PUBLISHING EVERYTHING PUBLICLY about the current salaries throughout the train system ....and then PUBLISH PUBLICLY, what these UNIONS are demanding.
THEN, let the government publish what the actual additional costs are going to be to the travelling public.
EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ….WITH ALL THE INFORMATION ABOUT EVERY PUBLIC SECTOR UNION AND THEIR FULL COMPENSATION PACKAGES …IN A SIMPLIFIED EASY-READ MANNER. The Collective Agreement is NOT an “easy-read” format.
THEN, let the consumers/passengers/public, vote (ONLINE OR AT LOCAL PUBLIC SPOTS) as to a "common-sense" selection of perhaps FIVE OPTIONS/CHOICES, such as:
      1) give the union everything they want
      2) give the union nothing
      3) give the union 1/2 of what they want
      4) give the union an amount that resembles the correct calculated inflation rate
      5) give the union an amount that the public agrees to
Let's not forget that no one is forcing the people in the union to work at their jobs. If they don't like their jobs, or the pay, there is nothing stopping them from bettering their education for the purpose of making them eligible for better, higher paying jobs.
It is NOT difficult at all, with today's technology, for any intelligent government to set an "ONLINE VOTING SYSTEM", or to hire a "THIRD PARTY" polling company to set this up ......AND APPLY THIS PROCESS TO EVERY PUBLIC SECTOR EVERY TIME THEY DECIDE TO STRIKE .....WHICH IS PRETTY MUCH AT THE END OF EVERY COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT.
MAKE THIS A PERMANENT PROCESS FOR THE PUBLIC TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES!!!
If the public was to respond with a flat-out "NO" to any salary or benefits or pension or pension benefit increases ... what is the union going to do? They could very easily respond with a "NO" ....at which time then, the rail will shut down ......and the whole issue can be sent to the courts.
Just imagine the public's opinion of a union at this point. Does anyone think the union members care about the public or what the public thinks? ....and therein lies one of the primary problems.
The public systems belong to the people ...not to any UNION.
LET THE PEOPLE SPEAK!!! This should NOT be up to any politician or any political party to "decide" ANYTHING ....when it comes to ANY PUBLIC SECTOR UNION ......simply because it is the PUBLIC who is paying these salaries .....NOT POLITICIANS!!!
      .

SERIOUSLY? Sounds like you don't work .....or you don't WANT to work. Where is the money going to come from to put food on the table? You don't sound very intelligent.

The median salary of 44000 pounds includes train drivers who are represented by a different union and they earn as much as 59000 pounds a year. This figure skews the median figure for the total population of rail workers upwards by about 11000 pounds. If you exclude train driver salaries and include all other categories of rail workers whose salaries are more homogenous then the median salary is about 33000 pounds a year which is also comparable to nurses and teachers median wages. It's simply like assuming a median salary for NHS workers where doctors salaries are combined with nursing assistants and cleaners. Obviously the data would be skewed upwards and therefore not representative of the general population of NHS workers youd need to use inferential statistics like regression analysis not just descriptive statistics like the median to arrive at an accurate figure. Driver salaries are outliers.

Isn’t this the same thing that the American/Canadian truckers just said? Airlines can’t employ enough people, teachers are leaving because they aren’t making enough!!! What’d you think would happen to mass transit?
I can’t even imagine trying to keep everything moving. Especially, food, and baby formula! There’s millions of Americans working 60+ hrs wk, taking short weekends, pay premium prices for daycare and at the pump! Just getting to work, and kids are now out of school!Homes are getting hard pressed to afford, add electricity for our a\c, it, and suddenly makes a heat stroke not sound so bad.
We’re rats running in a wheel but all we’re getting is a few crumbs. No personal time, and no health insurance either! So when they CANT NO MORE, they’re forced leave work and urgently seek Medicaid for Emergency Mental Health Services!
Add all these other issues, like eating nothing but Cheap pizza, Ramen Noodles and crackers or cereal, rice goes in everything! ! It’s the American Capitalist’s special moment to run out and shop those big-ticket items that are drastically reduced, cuz no one else can afford them. If a single parent or parent of a large family, better get familiar with gardening, raising chickens, eggs, and using solar lights, and water cooling. Because what lies ahead could be worse!

Do you notice that not any "offer" has been made public? Lots of rejecting from the union, but no information made public.
This should NOT be up to any politician or any political party to "decide" ANYTHING ....when it comes to ANY PUBLIC SECTOR UNION ......simply because it is the PUBLIC who is paying these salaries .....NOT POLITICIANS!!!
      .

There's no evidence for a causal relationship between wage increases and price inflation, yet economists continue to offer it as fact.
This outdated hypothesis relies on the erroneous assumption that workers consume what they produce, but in today's globalized world, this is no longer the case. Instead, developed countries import many goods, while an increasing number of employees work in the service sector, which also exports. Meanwhile, in developing countries, many workers can't (yet) afford to purchase the goods they manufacture, which are instead exported.
Consequently, wage increases in the service sector don't cause a rise in the price of imported/manufactured goods (such as groceries/clothes), which is why the cost of these hasn't risen much overall. Instead, they lead to increased DISCRETIONARY spending, as these workers spend more on eating/drinking out, entertainment, travel and vacations, which in turn grows the economy, by adding jobs to provide these discretionary services.
Instead, the CURRENT price inflation is mostly due to supply chain issues (caused by Covid-19 impact followed by Ukraine War) leading to delivery delays and shortages, as decreasing supply struggles/fails to meet increasing demand.
Indeed, price inflation was actually reasonably stable at 3-5% over the last ~30 years, with prices even remaining constant for several years after the global financial crisis of 2008-2013.
The elephant in the room is that the causes of price inflation aren't just poorly understood, but also poorly tracked!
This means that _when price inflation appears in certain sectors, businesses can use it as an excuse to stealthily increase their own prices, _*_regardless of whether their costs have actually increased._* Even worse, if they dominate a market they can raise prices without worrying about their products becoming uncompetitive!
*The end result of this lack of pricing transparency is that price inflation is used as an excuse to increase profit margins for corporations.*

    • @katecannon7958
      @katecannon7958 Před rokem

Excellent analysis, businesses are increasing prices (not all but most) some increases genuinely I’m sure to cover their additional overhead costs, some companies increases are partially driven not necessarily on cost to serve but in line with their competitors, bespoke products as you intimate because they can. This whole discussion regarding wage increases generally being far less than inflation and that we can’t increase wages in line with inflation or it exasperates the inflation. I am not hearing discussions (or it’s very scare) on why businesses have to increase costs based on cost increases they are seeing, generally they are not using a 2 to 3% marker they use for their workers, oh no more like 10 %, 15% maybe and unlike most people have an annual salary review, no such restrictions on business to review in line, the increase whenever there profits look under potential threat (I certainly do not believe all businesses are the same and I do know their are genuine business who simply cannot absorb their increased overheads and struggle to stay in business, so tories what analysis have been done on companies profit in line with overhead increases are they trying to mitigate by absorbing some of this transitory inflation or merely passing it down the line to workers who In the huge majority aren’t seeing income increases that coincide with inflation, they cannot increase a sales price nor can they generally mitigate the increase of what the spend there earnings on
Yes there is a cost of living issue but Business set market price, customer has little choice to pay this price, next to no chance if market prices are in line , customer can’t get an increase in wages to cover increased cost so they pay it or go without. Across the board are company profits (generally speaking) losing the percentage profit that a public and many private sector workers (lower middle end workers) are losing in salary compared with inflation??? As a whole who are the losers here, who is taking to pain or certainly shouldering the majority of it???
