  • Helllooo everybody and come along for the ride as I birth the Marquette Golden Eagles program on NCAA 14.
In this episode, we officially put Year 4 behind us and shift our focus to Year 5 of this dynasty. The Golden Eagles come off an eventful offseason which saw them hire new defensive coordinator Matt Campbell, as previous DC Herbert Wright took the head coaching job at Kansas. Lance Leipold secured a top 35 recruiting class with two big additions on Signing Day as he continues to emerge as one of the top head coaches and recruiters in college football.
Coming off consecutive nine-win seasons, Marquette looks to soar to new heights this season as Leipold's mark on the program through recruiting and building a culture has really started to take shape. Junior Greg Walker returns for his third season as the starting QB as he's compiled a 15-8 record and will be instrumental in the offense's success, which features an immensely inexperienced receiving corps.
The Marquette backfield welcomes Northwestern transfer Mario McBride who is now eligible. McBride and last year's leading rusher Dusty Alexander will form a dynamic 1-2 punch, while change-of-pace back Craig Jones will get his fair share. Sophomore Michael James and Sam Manning will also be in the mix. Senior fullback Jeff Harris is a key cog in the offense. The backfield also welcomes JUCO transfer Josh Terry who is poised to be a dynamic offensive weapon with his athleticism and versatility.
Up front, the Marquette big uglies boast tremendous experience with three returning starters including seniors Randy Heideman and Shawn Murphy, along with junior Justin Hill who enters the year as the top player on the team at 87 overall.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles are expected to be more aggressive under new defensive coordinator Matt Campbell. Typically the strength of the defense is up front on the line. However, the interior is weak with all underclassmen. However, a strong rotation at the defensive end spot led by junior Antonio Carr and seniors Mike Johnson and Jerry Jones should be able to mask the deficiencies on the interior.
Last year's leading tackler Bobby Price headlines the linebacking corps and is now accompanied by true sophomore Chris Carter, along with fifth-year senior Randy Carpenter--the only holdover from our inaugural Year 1 team.
While the secondary proved to be the weakness of the defense last season, we're stronger this year with a talented corner tandem of senior Kenny Johnson and junior Robert Williamson. Senior Kevin Davis moves back to free safety and enters the season as a 2nd Team All-American. Junior Mark Henry steps up into a starting role at strong safety after spending most of his tenure as a primary special teamer.
In addition to previewing this year's squad, we'll handle Preseason tasks such as discussing redshirts, and digging into the depth chart, before previewing the 2017 schedule which is our toughest schedule of the series thus far with a strength of schedule grade at "A". We'll have our first matchup in the "War for Wisconsin" against the #16 Wisconsin Badgers. We'll visit two SEC teams and also host the #20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A visit to Morgantown against #5 West Virginia is also on the docket.
We'll then jump into the Year 5 season and start by previewing our Year 5 recruiting board. After another successful season in building this program, more and more recruits around the nation are expressing interest in playing for Marquette. Headlining this year's list include four stars #10 TE Tyson Williams, #12 OT Roger Koch, and #27 ATH Steven Goodman.
Last year the Golden Eagles reeled in the 35th recruiting class in the nation and now look to work their way into the top 25. Join me as I dissect our recruiting board and discuss our recruiting strategy for Year 5.
As we close the episode, we'll check out the Preseason Polls as defending champ Ohio State opens at #1, followed by #2 Miami (FL) and #3 South Carolina. In the Heisman Watch, Tyrone Swoopes of Texas opens as the favorite trailed by last year's runner-up Malik Zaire and Kevin Olsen.
We'll also look at Preseason All-Americans and take a look at the 99 overall club this season along with some of the top-rated players throughout the country.
In the next episode, we'll kick off Year 5 as our Golden Eagles look to soar to new heights this season. It all starts from the BMO Bradley Center as Marquette hosts recruiting rival Northern Illinois.
