      The movie Alive made in the 90s tells the same story. It would be interesting if they compared the crash scemes. I saw Alive when I was a kid and the crash scene gave me a lifelong fear of flying.

    • @prometheuszero9
      @prometheuszero9 Před měsícem +5

      Yeah just those clips made me feel that way. I think it was the explicit shots of human body frailty. In most plane crash scenes it's more of a mentally scary thing, but we don't usually see close-up compound fractures and bodies being crunched and stuff. It's usually the stereotypical fuselage-rips-open-screaming-people-get-sucked-out type stuff, which is pretty disturbing in its own right. But yeah, this was the first time I've ever seen these types of visceral "body horror" shots.

    • @siukong
      @siukong Před měsícem +2

      @@prometheuszero9 Funny that you mention that, because I feel like Alive was one of the first movies to have a well-executed "getting sucked out of a plane" horror moment. It certainly stayed in my nightmares for a long time after seeing that movie way too young. (I think I was only about 7)
      Only a few earlier examples come to my mind. Goldfinger, which was a totally cartoonish depiction of explosive decompresion. And a few of the Airport movies from the 70s. One of which was only implied, plus an antagonist (a guy with a bomb in the airplane washroom) and one of which was a brief shot of one of the pilots getting sucked out after a mid-air collision.

  • @Kopa_Malphas
    @Kopa_Malphas Před měsícem +15

    "I'm feeling it"
    yeah, that sums it up well. That crash scene was straight up brutal, without the need of gore, and the snow scene was extremely claustrophobic. They did their jobs SO damn well.

  • @gregcoree2
    @gregcoree2 Před měsícem +309

    Society of the snow was filmed partly in a real mountainside environment as mentioned by CC. But the whole background was then replaced by a full CGI reconstruction of the real mountain where the plane crashed in the 70's (the film technical crew spent a few days in the real location in the middle of the Andes mountain). There is a 50 minute documentary available on CZcams about the tech used by the Spanish team behind the movie.
    And I really recommend watching the movie as it is an extremely visceral and apparently truthful recreation of the real events.

    I just watched the 1970s Doctor Who serial "The Pyramids of Mars" and there are a couple of effects in episode 2 that I would be interested to see your reaction to. There's a quick bit where a poacher throws a stick and it bounces off an invisible forcefield that looks too good, and there's the best example of someone walking forwards in reverse I've ever seen.

    I've been swimming/lumbering through real snow when snowboarding, last day tons of powder fell, much of the day was great but towards the end it was chest high. A perhaps unexpected aspect is how darn warm you get exerting yourself that much even in minimal ski gear, like thin coat and long sleeved t-shirt. Every step takes so long, soo much planning, and soo much intentionally high effort, and often tumbling over at the end. Every mile you hike is like 20 miles of normal walking, sweating buckets.

      Even when he's real we think it's CG, because of the way he moves. You are watching a huge man in full armor moving with a speed and agility no normal human being could match. I suppose they slightly accelerated the footage and used very light materials for the armor. Perhaps in some shots they use smaller, more nimble martial artist or body doubles, under an equally smaller and lighter armor. Old school cinema tricks combined with the latest technology. Those movements make sense in the show, because spartans have superhuman strength and agility, but our brains are having a hard time accepting it.

    That last one is also a great example of "shaky cam" done properly.
    It kinda irks me that shaky cam gets knocked so much as a technique rather than the execution.
    The films that popularized it - the Bourne films - also set the standard for its correct use. Society of the Snow understands this quite well.
    Shaky cam should not take the subject out of focus, but rather through relative motion, it should take the background or foreground out of focus, simulating quick motion. This keeps the camera, and thus the viewer, attached to the intensity of the scene, perhaps even attached directly to the set the actors are on.
    I just thought that was worth pointing out.

      It got beyond simple nitpicks. The story itself is incoherent. It's 'and then' instead of 'therefore' writing, just so the writers can check off the different clichés they wanted to include, and the most connective tissue you get is usually a nonsensical excuse that falls apart after thinking about it for a second.
