  • Today we're going to chat a bit about art or artist related pet peeves and/or common irritants. This can be about art supplies, social media, how artists treat each other in the community, things that happen on the job...anything really!
    Please know that this video came from a good place and wasn't intended to hurt or really upset anyone. lol I know that pet peeves or annoying things can get the conversation pretty heated but...hopefully we can all be nice to one another. There is so much negativity in the world, let's rise above it and have a fun conversation instead. ;)
    PS, I know my pet peeve is bizarre. I:B
    Side note, I love how the thumbnail looks. SHE'S SO HAPPY AND CUTE!

    For me personally, one of the most offensive things is when someone thinks that because they don't personally like the subject of your art, that you are obligated to stop drawing it so they don't have to "keep seeing it everywhere." Or they say you're too talented for that "stupid" subject, and to draw something that they like. Basically anyone who has got the gall to think that they can directly tell someone else what to draw and what not to based THEIR personal tastes. Like, seriously, who the hell do you think you are? when someone expects fanart to look EXACTLY like the official character, i have a friend that thinks this and it's so infuriating. if i show her fanart of a character wearing different clothes she'll be like "why are they wearing that they're not meant to wear those" or "why did they draw the hair like that? it's meant to look like this" etc. the worse thing about that she's an artist as well and draws a bunch of fanart which doesn't look 100% like the character so you'd think she'd get that fanart doesn't have to have the exact same colours, clothes, art style etc.

    Probably my biggest, and yes I'm one of /those/ people, is the word "talent". I'm just tired of an artist's skill being undervalued, due to people believing someone is naturally born with these abilities. I can understand and appreciate the thought behind the sentiment, don't get me wrong, but I don't think people understand what that word does/says. It causes so many problems for artists to think that this skill is 'magic' or 'special'. It's why so many complain about us charging money vs "real jobs". It erases our efforts and makes art jobs out to be a hobby of passion only, rather than something to be taken seriously. It's why so many people don't pursue or continue to pursue art, thinking they don't have that 'magic' that others 'naturally' do. It's similar to your pet peeve on 'luck'. I'm just looking forward to the day when "skill" becomes the choice word. (I do love the painting btw :))

    • @tinxybee9592
      @tinxybee9592 Před 4 lety +10

      The way I view the word talented, is similar to skill actually. Imho saying that someone is talented at their job isn't THAT much different than saying someone is skilled at their job.

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome Před 4 lety +18

      @@tinxybee9592 There are definitely people like you out there, which is why I said I'm one of /those/ people who view it differently. The biggest reason is just from personal experience. Every interaction I've had with that word has only ever had that implication, spare maybe a handful of times at most. Even if you look up the definition of 'talent', one of it's meanings is "the natural endowments of a person". They are two different words for a reason, with two different meanings. Some people might USE them the same, but that doesn't mean they necessarily are.

    • @huangrenjun9408

      sambeawesome I feel like the art world is kind of poisonous not because of what your doing but everyone’s view on that. I heard on a different channel that half of the people she went to art college on the first year dropped out, I think it was because how seriously you need to take art to make it your job because of how much people are being used who do it as their job.

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome Před 4 lety +5

      ((Okay, reread this while slightly more awake, haha.)) I'm not 100% sure on the correlation between dropping out of art school and this issue of talent vs skill. There are a lot of professions where people drop out of due to the difficulties of the school, like doctors, programmers, etc. There might be some affiliation of the concept, but I don't think it's entirely related.

    NO Karen, I did not copy or trace an image from online, the most I did was use a reference. It’s like they think I can’t do anything original from my head.
    Another thing that ticks me off is when I’m trying to explain a story or a simple character and their design to a family member, and they just ignore me or don’t listen. When people ask me "did you draw that?"

My answer is always one of these: "anyone can learn to draw" or "you just need to practice - remember, I've been drawing for years". YES!!! I hate that so much. Hear it all the time. I usually answer "I stopped drawing stickfigures when I was five, because then I realised people had flesh on their bodies". Doesn't mean I could draw REALISTIC looking people at that age. And yeeeah, I guess I have a bit of talent, but most of my actual improvement in art comes from hard work and passion. If drawing is not your thing, then fine, don't draw! But if it's something you'd like to get better at, a lot can be done with practise.
      Also, I hate when people comment things like "it looks just like a photo!" or "is that a drawing?? I thought it was a filter or something!" on my drawings. Like, they're sooort of realistic-ish looking, but YOU. CAN. SEE. THAT. THEY. ARE. DRAWINGS.

  • @Nocmora
    @Nocmora Před 4 lety +83

    My art pet peeve is when people forget what art is all about. It's not about anatomy or hard facts, it's not made of only rules and there are no restrictions to what you can do. Art is about expressing yourself, not about how to draw a proportional arm. If you want to draw legs that are 25 km in length - do that. Don't like noses? Don't draw them. Want to make your character bend in impossible ways? Go for it!
    I don't get people's obsession with anatomy, proportions and hard rules. "B-but, but, I've heard that you have to learn rules before you break them!!1!" There shouldn't be rules for expressing yourself. Yes, you can get tips or critique if you want it, but the point of art isn't to compete in academical skills, god darn it. It pisses me off to see that mentality everywhere.
    Do what you want with art. Draw huge necks. Shade with black. Break every bone in the body. Don't put yourself in a cage of rules, please.

      However if you find you are struggling with finding a style that you like
      Learn the basic rules of the thing you want to stylize. It doesnt mean you need to follow those rules, its just a good way to familiarize yourself with the subject. Textures, movement, shape and form. All that lovely jazz.
      But yea, if Picasso could make a fair amount of money with his broken abstract art that screams raw emotion, nothing is stopping you from doing it yourself.
      Honestly in art, rules are more like guidelines.

    my biggest pet peeve: when people give you unsolicited opinions on your art - like when people see your sketch book and flip through it (often without asking) and tell you how you could do things better/how your sketches aren't all perfect artworks - like, no - I'm drawing/painting because its fun, if I want advice I'd ask ya know >_> (also this often comes from people who have never even tried drawing/painting - which somehow makes it even worse :( )

      I do agree that criticizing a sketch seems a bit pointless (at least if it's just a quick sketch you made to pass the time) and looking through a sketchbook without asking is just a shitty thing to do.
      But just because you're painting for fun doesn't necessarily mean you don't want to improve and one of the most efficient ways to improve is to get criticism. Of course you don't have to want to improve but people might not know that so they try to help you by criticizing your artwork. If you don't want that you can just tell them.
      While another artists opinion obviously is more valuable (at least in most cases) since they can give you a more specific feedback and maybe even tips on how to improve I don't think the criticism of non-artists should just be ignored. They might not be able to go into detail but they usually are still able to tell if something looks pleasant/unpleasant or righ/wrong.

    • @kilililian1439
      @kilililian1439 Před 4 lety +4

      Well, I personally find it fun to look at a painting/drawing and analyze what the artist did well and where they could improve and since I'm already looking for that stuff in an artwork I often think it doesn't hurt to tell the artist what I found out.
      Generally people criticize your art to help you, not to harm you. After working on an artwork for hours it's often hard to see every flaw so other people opinion can be quite helpful.
      Of course you didn't specifically ask for the criticism but I'm guessing you don't say you don't want criticism, either so people will just do what they think is right.
      My point is, criticism can be extremely helpful and if you really don't like it you could try to explain to people that you prefer to find the flaws in your art on your own and ask them to not criticize it.
      I personally think you should try opening up to criticism, especially since compliments seem pretty ingeniuine if you forbid it, but of course you're free to do whatever you want.
      (Sorry that this comment got so long)

    • @YucaTMI
      @YucaTMI Před 4 lety +4

      Ekkrugg You’re absolutely right that criticism can be immensely helpful and I’d argue even necessary for improvement. However, personally, if I want my work critiqued, I’ll go to people that I know might know better than me, or I ask publicly for critique. But I don’t aim to improve myself constantly. Art is not always about improvement to everyone, it might just be for fun.
      The point I’m making is not that constructive criticism doesn’t help, but rather that it’s sometimes just not asked for and that it can actually discourage you.
      If I drew a piece, for fun, for myself, and someone, I probably don’t know, comments on it what I did wrong and how I should improve next time, sure that might actually help me improve, but it also devalues the work at hand. Just from an emotional stand point.
      And if you’re not a professional artist, just doing it for fun or relaxation, why does someone else need to insert their negative, although well intentioned, opinion into that space.
      In addition to that you could argue that people critiquing you because they think you need to be helped, as you said, is rather condescending. I, for one, assume that everyone is smart enough to either seek out help if they need it, or look for other ways to improve, if that’s what they mean to do.

    • @kilililian1439
      @kilililian1439 Před 4 lety +2

      @@YucaTMI I guess you're right, not everyone wants to improve all the time and even constructive criticism can be discouraging. Since I always want to improve because it's one of the things that make art fun for me I didn't really consider that.
      I disagree that giving constructive criticism without the artist asking is condescending, though. I mostly don't ask people for criticism because I think if they want to give their feedback they'll do it but by asking them for it I feel like I'd force them to do it and maybe even look closer at the artwork than they intended to do. I guess that attitude differs from person to person.
      I guess in the future I'll just ask the people posting their art whether they wanted me to give them some criticism or not. That way they don't have to specifically ask for it (in case they are as weird as I am) but they don't have to indure criticism they might not even want to.

    This hasn't happened so much since I was a teen, but it always used to irritate me to no end when I'd show someone my art and they'd assume immediately that I'd traced it. I was told by so many adults to take it as a compliment but it always felt insulting that they didn't believe I could actually have the tallent.
    in addition to, any instance of people attributing my talent to luck instead of the time and effort I put in to practice and learn.
    on the pet peeve side of thing, it bugs me when people ask me if I'm self taught. By most people's definitions, I am, but the phrase has never felt right to me when I relied so much early on from tutorials and advice? I didn't figure it out on my own from scratch, it's just that my guidence wasn't in a classroom.

    Like with my grades in school, it's the whole "that's because you're talented/smart". No, it's because I'm literally devoting hours into something and working out ways for it to turn out the best I could. The whole talent/smart thing annoys me because it erases the effort I and millions of others put into stuff on the daily. At least is what it feels.

    This probably won’t matter, but my art pet peeve would have to be people stealing your sketchbook from your desk or bag while not looking. The worse time this had happened was during I think the 7th grade when I had gotten a new sketchbook, which was just a purple lined notebook. During one of my classes I was looking through my backpack for my sketchbook when I realized it was just GONE. I knew I had put it in my bag immediately before I went this class, so I was certain that it wasn’t in my last class but I went back to look either way. While I was looking around for it, I saw in the class trash can one of my drawings crumpled up, along with a few underneath it. Long story short, I found my ripped up sketchbook cover and drawings in the trash that I worked on and sort of broke down from it since I really liked the art I had made. Turns out one of my classmates and sort of friend, who I’ll call MI, had taken my sketchbook either during or before class and threw it away. Anyway, besides this everything you mentioned in the video was super accurate. Love your videos, keep up the good work 😊

    The watermark was definitely something I had a problem with, mostly personally. I went back and forth debating on whether to use watermarks or not, and I did for a little, but eventually gave up because people can and do unfortunately edit them out. So, I've just started trying to hide my signature in my art. I don't always do it, but I like to try and sneak it in there. One of my pet peeves though, especially when doing more traditional work in pencil or charcoal is when people say "ooh, I like that part" and instead of pointing to the part of the picture they're talking about, they just go right in and end up smudging the spot. That used to happen to me a lot. I hated that. That and when people know you as the art person and whenever you're drawing and think something doesn't look right and you know it's off, people always try to tell you it looks fine and say nothing's wrong with it when you're about to redo a whole section. I know it's not meant to be mean and I know they don't see what I see as the person working on the picture, but it's like an unintentional back seat artist telling you what not to do

    When young artists/new artists think that the more expensive art supplies they have the better they’ll be when in actuality the best supplies imo for a beginner is learning the basics with pencil and paper, then moving onto an opaque or transparent medium for learning color.

    I hate it when strangers loom over me when I’m drawing and want to interrupt me and have a conversation about it. Like...I understand I’m doing something mildly unusual and interesting in public, but I don’t understand why that is an automatic reason to interrupt me. Like you could work on a screenplay in a coffee shop and no one would probably stand over your shoulder and watch you type, but if you decide to go to the park to paint scenery studies, or make some sketches while at the art museum, you are guaranteed to have several strangers stare over your shoulder and want to talk to you.

    This is more of costume making, but when people put what you made on without asking... One pice I made is completely ruined because the inside is discolored and smells awful because so many people just grabbed it and put it on. Then they complain about the smell, and I have to explain the same thing over and over. Now it's my first instinct to say "please don't put that on" but sometimes I still get "come on, only once?" Or "why not! I won't break It!".

    *_"Oh my God, this drawing is amazing!"_*
    I drew this when I was 7 years old and had little to know knowledge of proportions and the characters look like garbage. People who don't draw apparently like to suck up to mediocre art because they "can't even draw stick figures." They probably follow the logic that if you can't do it better, you can't criticize it as a religion.
    Additionally, I didn't have a problem with it then, but now that I think about it, it's really just bad. In my elementary school, up until 3rd Grade, there was an Art class where you either followed direct instructions that taught basic principles of art (not drawing both eyes of a character when they are facing either side, etc.) or just draw whatever you want. It did little to teach about drawing, and even though I did not like the Art class in my middle school, it actually encouraged mediums other than pencil and paper, and my first project got me elected for student of the month, so even though I personally disliked that Art class, it was objectively better than the one in my Elementary.
