For a little information on the history of the time, China had been at war against itself for 22 years, and it had ended only 11 years prior to the history of this movie, it being from 1991. The people suffered immeasurably during the Japanese occupation of both continental China and Taiwan, which had ranged even longer.
Everyone we see had stories of war. I don't mean the characters, but the actors too. Their families had lived lives of violence until now, and still lived under the constant thread of it all regressing, of the little peace they had being destroyed.
They were trying to rebuild a nation that hadn't existed for pretty much all their lives.

Just finished this film. Hearth breaking and beautiful.
The inspiration for the film was the real-life murder of a teenage girl by a classmate, committed in Taipei on June 15, 1961, an event that deeply affected filmmaker Edward Yang and other members of his generation in Taiwan.
In fact, A Brighter Summer Day's Chinese title translates as "The Youth Killing Incident on Guling Street."
The English title for the film comes from a line in Elvis Presley's song "Are You Lonesome Tonight?"
Elvis sings the line, "Does your memory stray to a bright summer day," but the characters in the film mishear it as "a brighter summer day."

1:10 HEARTBREAKING 😭
My knowledge of the film only used to be the narrative you’ve crafted here in this video, but half-way through my every rewatch of this vid, I always end up putting my attention away from the visuals so that I can better experience the film once I watch it myself.
Now that I have, I’m very glad I didn’t watch the video all the way through until now. I honestly believed that the film’s conflict would revolve around some girl accidentally killing another kid, but the film turned out to be so much more and not even close to what I imagined it would be.
I thank you not only for making this amazing video, but also for recommending me a great film.
Definitely one of my favorites! There are very few better ways to spend 4 hours
