- Hi everyone, thanks for checking out my video on how to make some cheap and easy DIY parrot toys! We make these toys regularly for our birds and their love them, but naturally when I am trying to film their reactions, they are as enthusiastic as they normally are!

All of the materials in this video are SAFE to use in the UK. I have been making these toys for over 12 years with no issues whatsoever.
For people who are concerned with toilet rolls:
- There is little to no evidence that any glue used to create the toilet rolls contains zinc, let alone a significant amount to cause any kind of damage. Zinc is present in many foods that our birds eat.
Also for people who are concerned about bacteria - birds should not live in a sterile environment. I'm not saying smother them in poop, but there would not be any significant amount of bacteria on the rolls to cause any harm.
Yeah, I remember when I was a **newbie** in the channel (came here through this vid) and also thought that the toilet rolls r unsafe but maybe mine r (it's looking suspicious) so I just use bird safe cardboard

As easy as it is the ramekin one is still my fave. The boys still love it and Pickles just chucks the straws all over!
Im so proud of myself! (I didnt make any of these) but I made a PERFECT looking bird toy by copying one off google and it looks nearly identical! I used some sticks and wooden beads from some baby toy and made it into a bridge with hoops of beads on the sides. Im legit so proud of myself.

Thanks for the ideas, I got my bird last Saturday. So far, so good. She seemed to warm up to me quickly. I spend as much time as I can near her cage, and even though she isn't hand tamed she isn't worried about hands, I got to hand feed her yesterday. Hopefully in a few weeks/months I'll get to try these ideas :) She finds new items suspicious so I'm going to give her more time to get used surroundings. Cute birdies you have!
Hey, thanks for your comment! Thatâs awesome, what kind of bird do you have? Thatâs fantastic that she will take some food from your hand as itâs the first step to a trusting relationship! :) Once she is really eager to take treats from you, show her new objects like these toys at the side of the cage and give her a treat for looking at them from a distance, and pretend to play with the toys as well! She will soon become more confident in exploring! :)

@@BirdNerdSophie that's cool. I heard you make a reference to dodgy eyes, but I didn't realise that meant you were also vision impaired. Would be nice to chat sometime about our experiences as there are very few CZcamsrs who deal with the differences of parrot care when you can't see very well. They talk about reading a birds body language and they talk about all kinds of things you can do if you can see your bird, but they assume that everybody can see and that can be frustrating.
@@biancapeterek3858 of course! There is quite a good size community of blind and partially sighted people who live with birds which is amazing! Not being able to read body language does pose it's challenges, but it doesn't mean that we can't find other ways around it!

Thank you, they have such cute little colourings! When Fish was a chick, most of his feathers were stripey which was adorable! We are still working out how Pickles' feathers will look - when we rescued her, she was on a poor diet which really affects the feathers, but now her diet is much better! Slowly but surely as she moults, he new feathers are coming through super vibrant!

Im new to parrot series and i never had a bird before and i might buy one in the future , so i wanted to know if birds would litter in ur home and what do u do if they do that , thx for this video it was really nice
Hi there! By litter do you mean make a mess? They are very messy animals and we clean up after them asap if they go to the toilet anywhere and hoover daily for clean up other mess! I'm glad you liked the video!

Aysha Reeha unfortunately they definitely do poop on furniture! They are usually easy to clean with a bird safe spray like F10 or a vinegar and water mix, but bird poop every 10-15 minutes so lots of mess!

Hi! Some birds just aren't keen on scratches, and it can take a really long time for them to learn to enjoy it. Go slowly, and make your hand approaching him a really positive thing by pairing it with treats!

Thank you for this! I spent like $200 on a bunch of toys for my cockatoo, and they were destroyed in a month.. Iâm trying to find different diy toys just to keep him busy when heâs in his cage
It all adds up doesn't it đ Though the sign of a good toy is one that's destroyed - if a toy has been around for ages, it's probably not interesting haha! Hope your cockatoo likes some of these ideas! đđŠ

If they are plain then yes, if they are dyed then I would avoid unless you know they've used food colouring!

In what way are they sad? Your budgie might not know how to play with their toys - you can play with the toy and show them that is fun, and you can give them treats to reward them for approaching or touching their toys! đ

We donât personally use them, but if the materials are definitely 100% paper then they should be okay, just give them a good inspection first! đ

Hi Rachel! Iâm afraid we donât- I used to recommend the breeder we got the boys from but not any more.
The best thing to look for is a breeder who genuinely cares about the birds, keeps them in great condition and lets you see the parents!
Also you may know that many cockatiels have been surrendered to rescue centres and are looking for homes too đđđŠ

What items must be avoided when making parrot toys?
There are so many! But some to look out for are thin plastic, glossy paper, unsafe and coloured metals, bells, and anything they could get stuck in!

I normally put them on the floor but you could poke a bowl through the cardboard sand hang on some string!

just wondering, you mention only using food dye based paper, however I doubt the cereal boxes would be all vegetable based inks - how do you determine whats ok to use and what isn't?
I used to be work in zoos and these boxes were used without health issues for many years before I worked there so I know theyâre okay to use đ

We have stores that sell the shredded colored paper for packages and arent food colored but the boxes you used and muffin papers arent either I would think - can we not use just shredded paper from the Dollar Store?
Hi Donna, the cake cases are coloured with food grade colouring as they have to be if theyâre intended to be used to hold food!
Without seeing the packaging of dollar store shredded paper, I canât say yes or no! I prefer to be cautious and only use things I know are safe, for example I have been using the cake cases and cereal boxes for over ten years with no issues đ
So..my parents got me 2 bird toys for my cockatiels and 1 for my budgies, I feel so bad and I canât drive or anything cause Iâm a kid and stuff. And itâs so sad for me and not fair at all! I wanted to make this too but I donât have the straws nor the safe bird paper..what do I do?!:(
Plain white paper is safe, do you have access to that? Straws aren't essential, you ould always roll up paper like them!
I'm wondering if it's okay to use toilet roll with the printer paper??? Or instead.... or just if toilet paper/ tissues are safe for birds. I don't want to cause any harm to my bird but I want to make him some new toys so he doesnt get bored of his old ones.
Yes you can mix and match materials as long as they're safe! I wouldn't use tissues personally as they can get stuck in the beak and crop when wet!

Can you guys make diy mynah bird toys
We can definitely offer some suggestions but as we donât have mynah birds here we wouldnât be able to get any cool clips of them enjoying the toys!
Typically they like preening toys like crinkle paper stuffed in rattan balls, or shoe laces/paper string hung up in big bunches!
I've made a cardboard house for my 3 birds and they enjoy it and i used other parts of my old bird cage to make a bridge i had another but it escaped and the cage was getting old since this was 3 years before we got the new birds a cockatiel and 2 budgies the 2 budgies we got almost like 3 months ago as my other budgie died and me and my brother were sad about it obviously so our dad brought these 2 as for the cockatiel we got him nearly a year ago around Christmas as a gift from one of my many uncles and ever since i've made a lot of DIY stuff

Hey! Acorns are not safe Iâm afraid! Personally I donât use newspaper! Whilst the dye is usually non-toxic these days, it runs easily and your bird will have some weird colourings đ

As long as you are sure that they haven't used toxic colourings to dye the paper!

They should be active with clean eye, nose and back end! They shouldnât make a noise when they breathe, and they should be very interested in food!

What pellets can a baby lovebird eat? And also can they play with that
Assuming it's weaned, I recommend TOP's or Harrisons pellets! And yes lovebirds can have these toys too!

Out of curiosity, how do you know the cereal box is made with food coloring dyes and not toxic ones? I get the feeling they are, as a lot of human children tend to need to stick everything in their mouths as well. Which is why most of us parrot owners say we have 3 year olds, with a beak, who never grow up lol
Hey, thanks for your comment! It would be unlikely to be made with toxic dyes considering it is intended to contain food. However my main reason for knowing that cereal boxes are safe is because I used to work at a zoo and the parrots (big and small!) would be given these boxes to destroy all the time without an issue đ

Love the egg carton thing too. Just need to find parrot safe ones first. The eggs we get come in this cheap Styrofoam stuff. My mom likes to reuse them for other things.
I do save up toilet paper and paper towel rubes. Nice to have another use for them as well :D

Hey! Are you sure theyâre eating it? They like to roll it in their mouth but they usually spit it out! If they were ingesting it, Iâd be a bit concerned. What are their poops like?

Can I use Ferrero rochers case instead of that cake case..... Please tell
I personally don't eat them but from memory I think they have a partly shiny case so that wouldn't be safe!

It depends if they are just cardboard as many of them will have a think plastic coating on the inside to help liquid stay in!

Most paper is fine as long as it isnât glossy, with foil or dyed with unsafe chemicals!
I guest they can have cardboard and paper when i look online it says it bad for them
Birds can definitely have cardboard and paper but we only recommend ones which have been dyed with non toxic dyes, and cardboard which is matte not shiny!
