    *I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

    Welcome to Pentatonix!
    The first acapella group to break into mainstream in a very long time - they're a multiplatinum selling, 3 time Grammy winning, #1 billboard chart topper.
    And yes, while they're best known for their covers - they also have a lot of original music. I recommend watching Sing, Run to You, Can't Sleep Love.
    They started back in 2011 to compete on the NBC acapella competition show: The Sing-Off - which they won!
    Over the years there has been 6 members of the group:
    - Scott: tall, blonde guy in the middle. He's baritone of the group but has an extremely wide vocal range and the one who put the group together.
    - Mitch: the guy with the mullet (though he changes his look all the time). He's a countertenor, He's a childhood friend of Scott and outside of PTX they also have another group together: Superfruit (not acapella and less family friendly than PTX)
    - Kirstin: only woman of the group - mezzo soprano. Has also known Mitch and Scott since they were young. The three of them are referred to as "The Trio" - they are the main singers of the group.
    - Kevin: beatboxer extraordinaire. He also has a beautiful tenor voice, but doesn't sing as much as the others as he's needed for the percussion.
    - Avi: the groups original bass singer. you'll see him in their older videos - he's the one with the long hair and beard. He left in 2017 to spend more time with his family and for mental health reasons. No drama in the group and they're all still friends.
    - Matt: The new bass singer (and the guy singing the 3rd solo in this video). He joined in late 2017 and has been with the group since.

    Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." When Disturbed did it, I was more anger and rage, as we've become so entrenched, as a society, in communicating through text and social media, that we've become even more separated and deaf to others.

      They didn't really get the originals right in the early part of their career, in my opinion. The album with Sing on it is the first time they did (there's a few decent originals on that album, not just Sing).
      We do have to admit they're most successful as cover artists. But they're the a capella version of Weird Al. Not in doing parodies I mean, but in that they add something new to the original they don't just ape it. Also, in the same way a Weird Al parody is considered an honor, most artists consider it something of a special honor to have their song rearranged and interpreted by Pentatonix. I bet they've rarely been said no to in recent years (if a cover actually goes on their albums vs just on CZcams they definitely get specific permission).

    I've never seen a SINGLE reactor, anywhere, who wasn't totally blown away by Pentatonix on first listen. Ever. This was a decent one to start with too, because while everything they do is fairly mind blowing, this is definitely in the top 10%.

    • @munkhammer1880
      @munkhammer1880 Před 4 lety

      What they do would be a lot more ”mind blowing” if they weren’t relying on pitch correction so heavily. There is nothing even remotely natural to this sound, it sounds like robots singing thanks to all the autotune/melodyne/whatever being used. It’s hard to tell how talented these people are when you can’t really hear them singing through all the plastic.

    • @munkhammer1880
      @munkhammer1880 Před 4 lety +1

      Ofra Cohen i’m not a hater. When i found this band years ago I was hoping to like them, but the more I dug in the more disappointed I was. I’ve watched documentary clips and live clips etc, and I stand by what I said earlier. I used to sing in groups, and even tho these guys and girls are a million times better at singing than I’ll ever be, what they are doing is the same pitch corrected sound that 99% of acappella groups are doing. Most of these groups use pitch correction live, and they smear their recordings with that sound. This particular piece that Jersh is reacting to, is so washed in autotune (or whatever software they’re using) that I find it difficult to listen to. There’s a certain lively quality that the human voice has, a slight randomness that even the best, most trained classical singers have, that is completely missing from this style of production. It sounds unnatural, it sounds like plastic, it sounds like there is no natural movement or vibration whatsoever in the voice. And that, to me, makes all of this sound completely fake. If you can’t hear it, maybe do some research on autotune for example, watch a few tutorials where they show you how it works and how it effects the voice. And sure, these people are super talented, i’m not arguing against that. My point is that all that talent is layered under piles and piles of studio pixie dust, it’s like they put on 30 layers of clear coat on top of everything. And yeah, sure they can bust out lots of stuff totally live without any mics / amplification, but I guarantee you it does NOT sound like this. Either you are fooling yourself or then you don’t really know what to listen to when trying to pick apart that sound. I’m not trying to be rude, or talk bad about your Idols. I’m actually kinda annoyed about the fact that singers as talented as these don’t trust their skills enough to perform naturally. That’s probably why this whole phenomenom bugs me as much as it does. But seeing as millions and millions of people are into it, i can do nothing but to accept the fact that this is what the people want. But rest assured, these songs are heavily processed to sound like this. No human voice, and even more, no group of human voices sound like that together. It is missing the fluctuation, the air, the natural sound of minor nuances flowing through the air. The thing is, it’s so easy for anyone these days to just turn on a plug in on their computer to make everything sound more ”perfect”. When in fact, it’s the small imperfections that actually make things perfect. That’s my take on it. You’re entitled to yours, and you have every right to enjoy their music. Just don’t think that this is what they actually sound like in the studio with no effects. It just doesn’t happen.

    • @munkhammer1880
      @munkhammer1880 Před 4 lety

      Ps. The fact that you say they sound even better off mics... I actually agree with you on that. As when off mic, they sound more natural, and even tho they are not perfectly in tune, it just sounds better because that is how the human voice is. But when they sing live with mics, that’s a whole nother ball game. The vocals go through real time pitch correction, and that’s how they achieve that ”perfect” sound. It doesn’t mean it’s wrong, it is what it is and most groups do that. I just happen to think is sounds rediculous.

    Don't worry about being original in your reactions! We Pentaholics love seeing every reactor go through their personal Pentaholic journey.
    If you do more Pentatonix, you will really benefit from headphones on both ears. Their vocal range is so extreme, you need the headphones to really hear it all.
    They do have originals, but for the most part I prefer their covers, because they are so innovative in their arrangements.
    Many reactors wonder if maybe the lineup has changed (especially on the Daft Punk medley), but only Avi has left. Mitch & Kirstin change their looks a lot, but they are always in there.
    Mitch, Kirsty & Scott were friends from school & musical theater; when S & K were in their first year of college, they decided to compete on The Sing Off, but needed more people (and a rhythm section), so they brought in Avi (a classically trained singer, with such a deep voice) and Kevin (based on a CZcams of him celloboxing). Kevin does song in a few songs, and in some of his solo work, but mostly he is the backbone of every song. Kevin was pre-med at Harvard or Yale, speaks fluent Mandarin, plays cello & saxophone & at least some keyboard, and is pretty much a musical genius. They cohered dyeing their time on The Sing Off, won the show & recording contract, were dropped by the label a couple weeks later because A Capella wasn't marketable, and went on to market the crap out of themselves on CZcams, win 3 Grammys, get picked up by another record label, and get to the point where they can headline stadiums.
    I am sure others can fill you in on details I have left out. Welcome! If you react to more PTX, I will definitely subscribe!

    beatboxing at the same time) had gotten over 900000 views. They met the day before the audition for the show and chose the song „Telephone“ by Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. They won the Sing Off, but were dumped by their label only a week later. So they started releasing videos on CZcams and were accepted by a new label. They won 3 Grammys in 2015 for their Daft-Punk-Medley (Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella), in 2016 for their arrangement of Dance of the
    Sugar Plum Fairy (Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella) and in 2017 for their cover of Jolene with Dolly Parton (Best Country Duo/Group Performance).
    They´ve also achieved several platinum and golden records in different states.
    Until 2017, Avi was the base of the group but he left because he missed his family too much. He now does covers and originals by himself and with other groups. He also helped find PTX´s new base, Matt Sallee (black guy in white jacket). Each members has done songs by himself/herself or with other artists. Mitch and Scott also have a separate channel called Superfruit, where they sing, dance, have fun and talk. It´s pretty awesome to see how much the group has grown.
    PTX does originals AND covers. A few of my favourite covers are „No“ by Meghan Trainor, „SweaterWeather“, their evolution videos and I especially like their covers of „Problem“ by Ariana Grande and „Cheerleader“ by OMI. A few originals are Cracked, Water, Can´t sleep love and Take me home. I love all of their music and especially their christmas covers.
    I recommend
    you check it all out!

      Yes but no - while technically they are acappella, this sound that they have is very heavily produced to sound like this. Pitch correction all over the tracks, this is not how the human voice naturally sounds like. Trust me, when in the studio with no effects, this is not how they sound.

      Live or studio, it doesn’t matter. They use real time pitch correction when live with mics. Live live, with no amplification, that’s a different thing... They probably sound really good totally acoustic, but I guarantee you it does not sound like this. Anything recorded / sang through a mic - it’s pitch corrected. Trust me.

    Welcome to the world of Pentatonix, the biggest selling, most successful acapella group in history.
    No instruments-except for the rare occasion the beat boxer (all the way on the right) plays his cello.
    From left to right:
    •Matt Sallee.
    The newest Pentatonix (aka PTX) member, who sings bass. The original bass (who you’ll see in all videos before December 2017) was Avi Kaplan. He left (on good terms), because PTX maintains a brutal schedule of recording-rehearsing-touring. The touring was hard for Avi (his Mom was ill). He helped to select Matt as his replacement.
    •Kirstin (“Kirstie”) Maldonado.
    Kirstie is a mezzo-soprano. She, Mitch and Scott have all been friends since childhood. Kirstie was in the cast of “Kinky Boots” (Broadway) recently. Kirstie also changes her look frequently-having rocked blonde hair, red hair, brown hair. She and Mitch are chameleons that way (see Mitch description).
    •Scott Hoying.
    Scott is a baritone, who sings bass as backup when Matt (or previously Avi) sings lead. Scott, Kirstie and Mitch had the idea to compete on the NBC reality series for acapella groups called “The Sing-Off”. They recruited Avi as bass and Kevin Olusola as beatboxer. Scott came up with the name “Pentatonix”. They won “The Sing-Off” in 2011. (More about that below). Scott is VERY busy. He does PTX, he and Mitch have their own duo called “SuperFruit”, and Scott recently helped found an all-girl acapella group, “Citizen Queen”. CQ opens a lot for PTX.
    •Mitch Grassi.
    Mitch is a counter-tenor, the highest register most men can sing. He was bullied as a child for having such a high voice. You mentioned his mullet. Mitch is a chameleon. Every video, concert etc, his look varies. He’s lost a lot of weight along the way (if you look at older PTX videos, he’s hard to recognize. But it IS Mitch).
    •Kevin Olusola.
    When Scott, Kirstie and Mitch were looking for a beatboxer, they saw videos of Kevin (“KO”) on CZcams. He amazed them from the start, and he also does “celloboxing”-playing cello and beatboxing simultaneously. Kevin is a Yale graduate, who had planned on medical school. He also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. When he’s asked now if he regrets doing PTX instead of medical school, he says “no!”
    After winning “The Sing-Off” (and a recording contract) they all moved to LA, only to lose that contract. They started putting videos on CZcams (their video for “Daft Punk” cost them $400 and was filmed in a closet), and got a new recording contract. To date, PTX has recorded five albums, all of which charted in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart, selling over two MILLION copies, and have amassed 2 BILLION views on their CZcams channel. They’ve won three Grammys: one for the “Daft Punk Medley” arrangement; one for the arrangement for “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”-which has no words!-and one for vocal performance, in a collaboration with Dolly Parton on a remake of her classic, “Jolene”. They do a lot of covers, and have done original music as well. My favorite PTX original is “Run to You”, which is so good it’ll make you cry. You can follow their progression since “The Sing-Off”, by watching their videos. I’ve seen them live twice, and they sound the same live as in their recordings. Kirstie says they can rehearse for many many hours on one song-because they not only have to do the vocals, but they have to do the sound effects-drums, whistles, etc.
    I’ve followed their journey since 2011, and I’m a true Pentaholic!

    They mostly do cover songs, likely because as an a capella "band", the market is bigger when you hear what is possible to cover with just voices. But they do have many originals, Love Again is an amazing EDM a capella song of theirs! I personally love all of their originals!! Please do more Pentatonix! They formed in 2011 for the A capella singing competition, The Sing Off. At the end of 2017 one of their original members left the group for personal reasons (no drama, they're still friends and he helped them find his replacement), so only one member is different. Although 2 of the other members change their look A LOT, they are not different members.

  • @pat_in_va8605

    To understand The Sound of Silence you have to take into account that it was a song of 1965. Not only were we protesting the Vietnam War we were going through an attempt to end racism in our country. It was a protest song. Simon and Garfunkel were sending out a message that if we were not careful, in the sixties, we would never communicate with anyone, and we would lose our ability to love our fellow human beings. Disturbed's version is their anger that the warning that Simon and Garfunkel put out in this song in 1965 was not heeded. I see Pentatonix's rendition to be a cover of Disturb's version. It carries that tone, that vibe.
