    A Sega salesman left a demo case with a Sega Master System 1 at the store where my mom's cousin worked when it was discontinued. He gave it to me well over 30 years ago and I still have it to this day. Nintendo is cool, too. But I cherish this memory and in my heart I am a Sega guy because of this.

    Just being honest, most people who swing the Nintendo way swing waaaayyyyy hard that way, while most people who swing the Sega way still have the capacity (and emotional maturity) to appreciate and enjoy other platforms. I'm not surprised people assume Retrobird is a Sega guy because he doesn't bash Sega, but it is possible to put a finer point on having fun than expressing loyalties in a console war that ended, at the latest, in 2001.

    Good video! I never thought you were a Nintendo or Sega Guy...just a Game Guy! I love both as well. I grew up with both Nintendo and Sega. They just compliment each other nicely. Sega is like peanut butter and Nintendo like jelly...put them together and you get the best of both worlds!
    The Nintendo vs. Sega rivalry really died with the '90s, so not sure why there would still be a stigma attached to either Nintendo or Sega. They both have many great titles that are still fun to this day!
    I feel bad for those who do not know of Rocket Knight Adventures. I was lucky to experience RKA first-hand at a childhood friend's house. The game absolutely floored me as a little kid and is still one of my favorite action games on the Genesis! I do also recommend the sequel Sparkster on both Genesis and SNES (though, I personally prefer the SNES version as it plays much closer to RKA). Avoid the reboot Sparkster from 2010, though.

    I've always been a Sega guy far more than a Nintendo guy and the main thing that threw me in that direction was the Senate hearings on violent video games during December 1993. I was a little kid during that time, but my mom had CSPAN or whatever channel it was called and I sat down and saw the entire thing. It was BORING at first (old man Senator Lieberman and other old man senators blabbing on and on) but then the "action" started and I became VERY furious at Nintendo's Howard Lincoln (who was the rep for Nintendo at those senate hearings). I had a Sega Genesis and a NES at that time while having a stack of gaming magazines from Game Pro to Gameplayers to Die Hard Gamefan. I knew both companies pretty well. During 1993 I was primarily getting my mom to buy me Sega Genesis games and I was playing games like Mortal Kombat and Lethal Enforcers (contrary to Senator Lieberman's beliefs, I did NOT grow up to become a serial killer who does fatalities on random people crossing the street. LMAO). Sega had RATINGS on many of their games (GA for General audiences, MA-13, and MA-17, all of these were created BEFORE the ESRB that the senate hearings forced on everyone).If parents weren't blind, they could see the ratings on the game's boxes (my mom didn't care about the ratings because I was a straight A student who had never done anything violent, so she knew I could handle the content in games like Mortal Kombat and Lethal Enforcers and wouldn't go psycho in real life).
    Anyway,
    Nintendo's Howard Lincoln was a complete butthole at those senate hearings (I have stronger words to describe him, but for PG-rated purposes, let's refer to him as a butthole. LMAO). He went out of his way to throw Sega under the bus in the worse way possible while sucking up to the old man senators. Even as a little kid I knew the words flying out of Lincoln's mouth were exaggerated crap and lies. Arguably the most cringe part of those senate hearings was when Senator Lieberman held up the LIGHT BLUE Lethal Enforcers light gun and called it a legit assault weapon. LMAO. Nintendo's Howard Lincoln was sucking up to the senators by saying Nintendo censored all of their games (as a little kid during 1993 who had a mom with spending money, I was not amused by this). There is A LOT of crap that went on at those senate hearings (don't even get me started on the absurd allegations they made towards Sega CD's Night Trap. Those crap allegations will have me typing at least four more paragraphs. LOL) but the bottomline is that Nintendo was dead to me after that. I stayed a loyal Sega fan till the end of the Dreamcast. Now days I'm a loyal Playstation fan (currently with a Playstation 5 and PS VR 2) who also likes and owns the Evercade VS.

    • @madspunky
      @madspunky Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yeah, those hearings were indeed dishonest. But so was the Blast Processing marketing.
      And games like Super Metroid, Mortal Kombat 2, Super Mario Kart, Zelda 3, Chrono Trigger, Space Megaforce, Turtles in Time, Final Fantasy 6, Panel de Pon, Donkey Kong Country 2, Secret of Mana, Yoshi's Island, Contra 3, Breath of Fire 2, and Mega Man X were just too good to miss out on!

    • @johnpenguinthe3rd13
      @johnpenguinthe3rd13 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@madspunky I did play almost all of those games years later through two different ways: 1) Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console. Some years ago this pool table place I went to just had a Wii sitting around, all dirty and collecting dust and I asked about it and the owner gave it to me for free. On Virtual Console I ended up playing Super Metroid, Mario Kart, Zelda: Link to the Past, Contra 3 and Donkey Kong Country 2 and several others. I also bought some original Wii games. Strangely enough I ENJOYED Metroid: Other M (despite everyone else on the planet hating it, probably because I had played the original Metroid and Super Metroid and skipped the Prime games) and Xenoblade Chronicles and Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 some others like Last Story. All of those were good.
      And
      2) The original Playstation and Playstation 2 ended up getting TONS of 8-bit and 16-bit game compilations. On the original Playstation I have all of those Final Fantasy compilations (so I played ALL the 8-bit and 16-bit Final Fantasy games that way) and one of those compilations came with Chrono Trigger (great game). Meanwhile, Turtles in Time came as an unlockable bonus game included with one of the Playstation 2 Ninja Turtles games (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare). There was also a Playstation 2 Mega Man X collection so I played all the Mega Man X games that way.
      On a side note,
      The Blast Processing thing was a HALF-Lie / HALF Truth. LMAO. The Sega Genesis had a MUCH faster CPU than the SNES. Genesis has a Motorola 68000 CPU clocked at 7.6 MHz. Meanwhile, the SNES had a MUCH slower CPU in it, a Custom 65C816 at 3.58 MHz (that would sometimes slightly dip down below 3 MHz). That's why a lot of game genres like Shmups and sports games and others in general played a little faster / smoother on the Sega Genesis. So that's what Sega meant by blast processing (even though it was a made up term for marketing purposes, it was based on some truth). So it wasn't entirely a lie. But it wasn't entirely truthful either (the way they made Mario Kart look like a junk car driving at 5 miles per hour in that one blast processing Sega Genesis commercial was a rather extreme exaggeration. LOL).

    I think for some, it might be that Nintendo is still going as a console maker. So it blurs the line of retro and modern stuff. Where Sega as a console maker is very much retro at this point. By being a retro gamer, it might come off as heavily preferring Sega, since that's what they are probably more well known for. Especially since much of Nintendo's IP gets new games. With even their older games often getting a new coat of graphics to play on modern stuff. Where Sega pretty much gets a compilation of much of the same catalog. Meaning, retro gaming is the only way to actually play a lot of older Sega console based stuff.
    With the resurgence with Atari recently, it does feel a little off that you stay off that lawn entirely. Especially since, other than not being Japanese, applies to what you say applies to them back when they made consoles themselves. I picked up an Atari 2600 Mini Gold, and there's a lot of fun stuff on it. So much so, I kinda want to get one of the other newer Atari consoles or collections to go back and play some 7800 stuff. I was originally a 7800 kid back in the day.

    I grew up as a Mega Drive fanboy, denying Nintendo to myself, and marveling at the hyper-violent Sonic vs Mario drawings readers would send to Sega Power Magazine. My brother insisted we got a PlayStation instead of a Saturn, the following generation, and that passion died out. It was eventually extinguished when I got a GameCube and discovered how great Metroid Prime, Smash Bros and Mario Kart were.
    I still really like Sega, but only about as much as Capcom, Konami or Namco (whom I all love dearly). Nintendo goes above that, for me. I think it's uncommon for people to put Sega on the same pedestal these days, and you're seen as a megafan if you do. Not that Panzer Dragoon, OutRun or Shenmue don't deserve it.

    When I was younger, I tended to take sides a lot on Nintendo vs Sega, even though I would also happily play any video game I could get my hands on. During the NES amd SNES days, I usually backed them, because it bothered me to hear them attacked by the Genesis guys. I couldn't fathom why someone wouldn't want to play SNES or NES games. I didn't hate Sega consoles at all. I loved the Master System games I'd played, and Turbografx as well, and anytime I played a Genesis game, it was usually fun.
    I do like some consoles better than others. I like the NES better than the Master System. Overall, I like the SNES better than the Genesis. I'll take Saturn over N64 every day of the weem, and Dreamcast over Gamecube twice on Sundays.. That said, I also played literally everything else I could, whether it was Turbografx, Neo Geo, 3DO, Jaguar, Playstation... if I could give it a shot, I would, and I'd say handily that the Nintendo vs Sega days spawned most of my all-time favorite games. They both rule... and so do the others.
    I think the odd comparison for me is that the very best games for me tend to be on Nintendo systems, but the overall top 50 would go to Sega.
    That said, Mario eats Sonic's luch all day, and I'll die on that hill.

    I was 100% a SEGA kid in the 90s, with games on Game Gear, Master System and my beloved Mega Drive all with fond memories. Nintendo was present but only through the Game Boy. However, as we went through the disasters of the Mega CD and Mega 32X by the time the Saturn was out SEGA had burnt too many bridges, so I moved to the N64 and Game Cube, which allowed me to experience IPs I’d only really had passing experience of. I stuck with Nintendo ever since (along with Xbox and PlayStation at different times) but in recent years I’ve rediscovered what I loved about SEGA in the first place. Those classic games just ‘feel right’. I’ll always love the big N, but I’m SEGA till the end!

    I had a friend that got a Gameboy and super Nintendo. I love them then i asked my uncle for a video game and he bought me a Sega Genesis 3 instead. Then i became a Sega fan but still envy Nintendo fans for having Mario etc. Those were great times. I bought a snes and Gameboy last year. I want to get back a Sega Genesis 3 now

    That oldschool Japanese heavy way of gaming you were talking about made me really miss old Sony. You know when they would make quirky or games that would almost feel right at home on a Nintendo console like Ape Escape, Jumping Flash, PaRappa the Rapper and Sly Cooper.
    Sadly, the only IPs they seemed to of kept now at least in terms of their legacy IPs are Ratchet and Gran Turismo.

    • @richardhunter9779
      @richardhunter9779 Před 7 měsíci

      I would argue that Ratchet and Clank was their only mascot platformer worth continuing. Jak and Daxter seemed to get more and more unfocused with each release and Sly Cooper is very much your typical Sony game where you perform tedious activities to unlock content (mash R2 bro).
      The reason R&C survived is that it was unique, as well as good.

    I have a few friends who grew up as the "Sega Guy" & you don't give off the same vibe, one of them is also the "Saint of Bad Games" as he's basically only good at Bad Games.
    Anyways, I think people associate anyone saying good things about Sega as being a Sega gamer. I personally have always been about just games in general. Console, PC, Modern, Retro, doesn't matter... Well except mobile, never could get into those beyond portable gaming (PSP, Gameboy, etc) ports.
    If you're talking about Nintendo then I think most people consider you a gamer & same goes for Playstation & Xbox I find, but Sega & PC gaming have always had the association with being exclusive at least in the gaming circles I've part of.

  • @koolaid33

    I like this standpoint. Fighting over which one is better, 30 years later doesn't really do much. It's a debate that was ended when Sega dropped out of the videogame console market over 20 years ago, and yet people still try to find reason to vouch for one company and complain about the other. I always hated console wars because truly every console has different strengths and weaknesses and things that make it unique from their competitors. While I personally don't care for Xbox much after the 360, I still hold respect for them as they still do things differently to how Sony and Nintendo do things, and they still have good decisions like Xbox Gamepass which Sony and Nintendo still can't really compete with (very well at least). In the same way, Sega consoles had their own strengths and weaknesses compared to Nintendo, Sony, Xbox and even Atari and the like. The Sega Genesis has a great lineup of 1st party Sega games (Sonic, Streets of Rage, Ristar, Columns, Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin, Afterburner, OutRun, Comix Zone, etc.), a sleeker design and better audio than the SNES (in my opinion). However, the SNES has AV out on it's original model, a better list of RPGs, and all the Nintendo games you'd ever want or need. Each of these consoles hold their own, so pitting them against each other all these years later really serves to just separate the retro gaming community and I don't like that. We're all just dweebs who like old and new videogames, we all fall in the same category.

    I'm a Nintendo Guy primarily, but the first games I ever played were Sonic games on my mate's Master System II and I loved them. But when the Nintendo64 came out, his parents got him one, my mother got me one, and I've owned every Nintendo since. I can't get enough Metroid or Zelda. Metroid Prime 4 still being MIA is killing me! But I love Sonic games, too: have some on my Wii, 2DS, Switch and Xbox360. Have PC port of Valkyria Chronicles, a favourite by SEGA. And don't forget the Nintendo licensed SEGA to develop F-Zero GX: one mindbogglingly awesome game! Both companies are great.

    The only two reasons I can think of are 1. You have a ton of passion for Rocket Knight Adventures, like you brought out in this video (which is great by the way, I love that and hopefully get a chance to play it some day) and 2. I don’t recall you featuring space ship shooters on the NES or SNES. But that’s not knocking you, I promise.🙂 Just an observation. And really, you definitely seem balanced in your appreciation for both consoles, but I must confess I had pegged you as just a little more of a Sega guy.

      @@RetroBirdGaming Gotcha. But yeah, you’re right. Sometimes we can make blanket observations about a person just from a few things we see about them when their is usually a lot more to them, so thank you for the enlightening video. On a side note, if you haven’t played it yet, Gradius 3 and Earth Defense Force are great shooters on the SNES. The soundtrack on Gradius 3 is epic!! Even still, I have to admit, from what I’ve seen online, it looks like Sega had Nintendo beat when it came to space shooters. Have a good weekend buddy.👍

    I collect for Nintendo and Sega consoles, but at heart I collect more Nintendo software for the NES and SNES, as well as the Game Boy, than I do for Sega (mainly Genesis and some Saturn stuff, the latter's library isn't cheap to collect). I played some Sega stuff as a kid, but my friends who had the Genesis, immediately ditched them once the SNES came out, with one friend going backwards, back to an NES after he got tired of his Genesis.
    I've had my SNES since 91, got given another one around 2016 or 2017, have had a Model 2 Genesis since 98, got a Model 1 around 2012 or so.
