  • Carding that first birdie is an achievement all golfers cherish for a lifetime... if they can remember it. Erik Anders Lang revisits the very hole where it happened on this Adventures in Golf, presented by United Airlines.
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail transformed the entire state of Alabama, and it also happens to be the site of EAL's first circle on the scorecard. Nostalgia notwithstanding, Erik calls this one of golf's greatest road trips.

When I was a kid growing up in Montgomery, I won a radio contest for picking Mike Weir to win the Masters in 2003. The prize was an RTJ trail pass and a new pair of golf shoes. Needless to say, it was an unforgettable experience strolling down the first fairway at The Judge in new Footjoys with my dad.

I’m 46, brand new golfer. My first birdie was at Hounds Lake Country Club, Aiken, South Carolina. I’ve been playing for 6 weeks. Golf is all I can think about. It all started when I was gifted 2 tickets for the first day of tournament play at The Masters. I was absolutely blown away. I said to myself, I want to be a part of this. My 12 year old son and my beautiful wife all started together. Now we are starting to plan trips just to play golf. Golf is quite simply, magical.

Don’t have a picture or memory of my first birdie after almost 30 years of playing. However I have my sons first birdie on video when he was six. He will turn 11 in a few weeks. We play together all the time. We both witnessed each other’s first hole in one and we love watching your videos. Every time we play and get to a par 3, he says ace cam is live! Love the videos Erik!

I don’t remember my first birdie but I remember the first birdie after a 13 year break from the game. My son decided he wanted to try out for his freshman golf team. He inspired me to get back into golf. The first course we played at together I got a birdie. At the time it meant more to me than it did to him as he was just learning the game. It was a moment that I’ll never forget. My only witness was my son. That’s all that matters.

First birdie still fresh in mind... 5ish years ago. Garver Lake Golf Course in MI. 9 hole family owned mom and pop course. Hole 5, par 4 360ish yards. Dog leg left with a big tree in bend, only hole with a breaking slant. Sadly, course closed last year. It was a small course, nothing fancy or challenging. But fairways were slim, and enough trees with overhanging limbs in spots made ya make sure to be accurate instead of being long. Made me more choosy of shot placement. I miss that course...

Auburn Hills Golf Course, Riner VA. Triples, quads, doubles the whole round until the par 5 eighteenth hole. Drove it in the rough on the right, thinned first approach shot into a belly of rough, hit the wedge up without seeing where the hole is, walked up to see the ball 2 ft from the hole. Knees knocking and made the putt for the first birdie... still shot somewhere in the 110’s lol but played with the Vice Tours so there’s that

This year on Oct. 2nd! University of Idaho GC, Moscow, ID - Hole #5, downhill Par 3, 147yds (After a double bogey on a brutal uphill 526yd par 5... 556yds if you play from the tips). It's the small victories and golf that made it possible to get through this year!

Grew up playing Hampton Cove on occasion and I'm now working on completing the trail over the next couple years. Loved this video!

My first birdie was probably 40 years ago. I don’t remember it. I do remember my first eagle and my first hole in one. Of course, I’ve only had one each of those. The Hole in one was on the 14th hole, Rolling Hills GC in Tempe AZ just 3 months ago. The eagle was on a par 4 in Cincinnati Ohio about 40 years ago. Fun times.

I played the RTJ Hampton Cove Highlands Course a couple years ago and it remains as one of the top three courses I've ever played. I'm really hoping I can play the Grand National course at some point as the Barbasol Championship on the PGA Tour was held there from 2015-2017

My first birdie was at the West Course of Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse, NY on the 6th hole which was a par 5 at the time. My second shot landed on the green and I had a chance to make my first eagle before I made my first birdie. My eagle putt just missed the left edge of the cup and I knocked in the most nerve-wracking four foot putt I've ever hit.
