  • On this episode, we go to a small town in California to buy a 1957 Chevy hot rod. This car has been sitting for quite some time. Can we get it to run and drive all the way back home 600 miles to Utah?
    A special thanks to www.gstpautoparts.com for supplying the 17.gal fuel cell. They sell quite a few parts online, so visit them on their website and see if they can help you on your next project.

    I have lots of old cars and I always put a kill switch. It keeps people from being able to steal it as easily. I normally put a fuel valve in too. A switch is pretty standard for those of us who drive them everywhere.

      @@garycamara9955 No such thing as a 110. Very unlikely it was a 150 since those were stripped down for police, limited production and not sold to the public. I was thinking 210 since it does not show the fancier Bel Air trim.

    Great video.. glad you made it home .. I like to take chances but the old gas tank could have been a major problem.. in the tank there is a sock on the pickup tube that notoriously will stop up .. I throw them away and use just a in line gas filter and no problems pretty much forever if you change the filter .

    For the windshield and rear window, buy some cerium oxide, mix a bit of it with water to make a paste and use a buffer on the glass like you were buffing paint. It takes some time but you can get almost all of those light scratches out. I have a '57 210 2 door sedan that's very similar and I had the same windshield wear. I was able to vastly improve it, made driving much more comfortable. The stuff is available online and isn't expensive.

  • @KiwiStag74
    @KiwiStag74 Před 5 měsíci +3

    Was about to comment about the old girl being a bit far advanced timing-wise, but I see someone's beaten me to it!
    The ol' Chev still got plenty of life in her and sounds great. You aren't the first to be surprised by a little toggle switch under the dash - when I picked up my Triumph Stag and drove it up both islands of my country to home, the clutch spring got a bit weak, so I was under the dash trying to shorten it and must have knocked a hitherto unknown switch with my shoulder. Next thing I knew, the horns were sounding off loudly at regular intervals in the carpark of the motel I was working in! The car had an alarm fitted that I didn't know about!
    The '57 looks like a great starting point for a project and that a lot of the expensive engine side of it (and brakes too) has been sorted already. It didn't look like the pipes went far back from the headers when you fired it up at the beginning (the way a puff of black smoke came out the back quite spread out was indicative of that) so I reckon that's probably a good part of the fumigation that was going on for you. The tach showed me something else that you might want to check - I reckon her gearbox fluid might be a bit low. She seemed to be a bit lazy on acceleration - there seemed to be a big jump in revs without changing down before she started accelerating to catch up (like a slipping clutch does in a manual vehicle) which usually signifies the oil in the box is less than the ideal amount. I could be wrong and its just a feature of the box, but better safe than shelling out for a rebuild, eh?
    Thoroughly enjoyed the video. I like your easy-going style, mate. Looking forward to the next one. All the best from a new subscriber in New Zealand.

    I love the car! You can hear when you're starting it that the timing is off to the point of it not wanting to turn over and once it hot or up to temp it won't until it cools a bit. Once you set that timing right it should fire and start a lot easier.

  • @user-wq8qm4uo5b
    @user-wq8qm4uo5b Před 5 měsíci +9

    The problem with your starter is heat soaking from the headers. You need to get a gear reduced starter, then it will start everytime when hot. Had a 396 Chevelle do what your 57 was doing every time it was warmed up, started beautifully once cooled down again.

    Enjoyed the video and glad you're saving a 57! As a couple of people have already mentioned, it's a 210 2 door sedan, not a BelAir. Being a 210, your VIN should begin with VB57 if it was originally a V8, or just B57 if it originally had a 6 cylinder engine. So, that would be something interesting for you to quickly check out.

    The Summit offer carburetor but the float bowl bubble is not adjusted correct inside the carburetor. The fuel was lack and the fuel bubble was raised up too soon. Summit did not do good job of inspect the adjustment of gas needle rubber valve pressure versus 10 PSI from a good fuel cell but it will be too high tank to be attach to the underside of the Bell Air.

    You have a nice one started, with that eng setup. Now for the rest, are you good at welding, as there will be a lot. Though make it safe first, exhaust, rear spring's (could see the cheap spring hangers) wiring big time. Is there a relay on the power switch? If not put one in, if not able to rewire now.
    Have you checked out the gear ratio yet? I had 373's with a 700r4 was a good set up, forgot that is what I had and rebuilt after blowing it up, with 342's still not bad. What trans are you running? Holly makes a nice LED headlight( pricey at 200 each ( once again Summit) but with very good light) and low amps draw.
    Have you put in some fuel sys clearer in it?
    Yes you were correct the ovals in the rear bumper are for the back up lights. The ing key will come out in all positions and in less you have put in lock position you can start the car without the key.
    I didn't like not having an acc position so looked up later ing switch's, one from a early 60's will fit using the same lock cly and bezel. I was able to get the connecter (years ago) from a wrecking yard, that could be a problem now.
    I had to put reasoner tips on the exhaust to get to a level to be able to drive it, even though it has stock type mufflers on it.
    If you ever get to Prescott Az (you not all that far) so if you have reason to come this way, look me up and we will talk 57 Chevy's 😏 .

    I can't help but think that your stalling out and hard re starting was due to your replacement fuel tank. If the tank wasn't vented properly or your gas cap was on too tight, you might have been starving the tank for air and causing a vacuum your fuel pump couldn't overpower. With time on the road, driving over bumps, weight shifts, fuel atomizing in the tank causing gas pressure and body contortions, the tank's gas cap may have relaxed just a bit, to equalize and allow enough air to enter as the fuel was being siphoned out ?

    I did the LICENSE plate trick once & that's the last time. In Ca., it's a misdemeanor, big fine, court, you get the picture.
    Just run it without plates IF you just got it. Don't ask me how I know.
    Had a 150 model I drove from CA to TX 29 years ago. Lots of memories.

      Here in Florida if they catch you with a tag from another one of your vehicles on a different vehicle it is off to jail and pay bail then court. They've already heard all the excuses and don't mess around.

    I don't know what he paid (I also haven't watch the whole video yet lol) but that is a great find! The engine sounds like it's in good condition as well the interior is sweet too! Depending on what he paid he might have gotten a real Gem! Warning! Even though the seller told you they had just checked the fluids and they were dine people are gonna roast you big time for not checking the oil until after you started it LOL. Probably should have edited the Sequence of that oil check and when you turned it over so it looks like you did it before hand. LOL. Next time you'll know.

    40 to 50 pounds of oil pressure isn't bad, but the engine might be a little worn.

    Exhaust gas is leaking smoke. Then use thermometer laser to find heat leak should smoke be hotter than early morning exhaust metal pipe then in Utah sell some brands best FEL PRO to seal exhaust system.
