The other point is that; NZ for the first time in my life is, is not driving the bus in terms of influencing world rugby. They’ve insisted in isolating themselves from SA and the wallabies while the French top 14 is growing in power. If JK thinks we’re going to dance to his tune and turn union into basketball.

The bs pundits negatively towards RU are really all about not being able to match Springboks forwards power game or depth. Rather, trying to come up with a counter game plan, they go on to finger-pointing. Rugby has multiple adaptable playing styles. There is a way to overcome another's team game plan. But bashing the game really is kak

The Breakdown and their panel are a liability to rugby union. JK in particular is the worst of them, actively trying to unite League and Union by making the rules the same.
Rugby's problem is not scrum resets, kicking and all that. Rugby's problem is that a lot of the national unions are run like dog shit.
Australia, Wales, England are prime examples of how bad management of resources can kill the game. Ireland on the other hand through good management has a healthy game at club and national level. Same with France.
NZ also has good management but it gets boring beating the poorly run Aussie sides.
The conversation on Breakdown should be less about how to make union into league and more about how to get the Rebels and the Force to beat the Crusaders and the Blues.

I think it is crazy that JK is always talking about how Rugby League is developing, expanding and evolving their game and Rugby Union under World Rugby is not and is a closed shop. Yet the Rugby League World Cup in 2026 will be reduced from 16 teams to 10 teams, while the Rugby Union World Cup in 2027 will be expanded from 20 teams to 24 teams. Also when you look at those teams who will qualify for the Rugby League World Cup, it is clear it is not really a World Cup as the teams qualified are not from around the world but rather from one or two locations.

Thats not the case with Rugby. And the teams being added to the 2027 RWC is just going to make the blowouts even worse and is only being done for when the RWC is held in the states - which was to ensure that the USA play in the tournament on their home soil.

I was Watching World Cup Rugby LIVE on TV. Theres 3 dickheads talking over the game, telling us what we can plainly already see. We see a player kick the ball out and they say a player "kicks the ball out". Well we just saw that. Do they think we are blind? When the play gets intense they actually start shouting over the game, drowning out the sound of crowd intensity and the whole Live experience. Its distracting millions of viewers from experiencing the game LIVE game. They have this need to talk every second without pause, like there covering a horse race. Its not radio, its TV. We have eyes that can SEE it LIVE. In fact our TV view is better than theirs. Several times the commentators get it wrong, we can plainly see what there saying is wrong. And then we have to hear their correction as well. Doh!
They even talk over when the ref is speaking to the players. We have ears but Gee! We cant hear the ref speak or the wonderful crowd atmosphere because their drowning out the LIVE game. We’re not there LIVE, we’re watching behind the shoulders of the commentators watching TV.
The Fifa World Cup had they very little commentary and we became apart of the Whole Live experience. We became Apart of the Game. We were THERE. LESS is MORE. On FIFA highlights there was no commentary and Wow, we were there IN the game. I’d pay $20 extra just to have no commentary. They could do that easy. Just play the game on 2 Sky channels. One with commentary and one channel LIVE.
If i was at the game and this was going on in the seats in front of me, they’d be told "Can you Shut Up, we’ll trying to watch the game”.
The worst part is they try so hard to sound manly to each other, as if shouting in a deep voice is the sign of being a real man. That is plain creepy. Sick lol. There just detracting us from watching the game LIVE. They are just schoolboys struggling with each other to sound important.
Examples of the dumb things we dont need to hear, things we can plainly see “theres a penalty”, “the ball has gone back”, “dangerous situation”, “He puts the arm out”, “All Blacks keep it inside the 22”, “The referee blows the whistle”, “the All Blacks have the ball”. Doh ! do these dickheads think we cant see or think?. Let the millions of viewers experience the game, not your dumb commentary.

Huge rugby fan from Portugal and I agree with everything you say. The scrums, line outs and mauls are what made me fall in love with rugby, it's what makes it different from other sport. Watching the Portugal vs Romania game was the best example of how teams can play differently, Portugal plays very free flowing rugby and has a weak forwards pack, while Romania has one of the best mauls in Europe, so the whole game Portugal just kept kicking to the middle of the pitch to avoid line outs and mauls, while Romania tried to gain penalties at the breakdown so they could kick to touch and score off mauls. That's what makes rugby amazing, it's the different ways teams can win

The solution is actually quite simple. Increase the time that rugby games are played. Then you could have 80 min of running/playing time without destroying the physical aspects of rugby, which is what gives rugby it's dynamism and ability to be played by all men great and small.

Mate kirwan is an idiot, the brutality of the modern game is way more severe than 1987 which is why people are "slowing" the game down cos its painful. Props are subsituted off after 50 60mins. 6/8 of the forward pack is off at 70. The fact kirwan thinks the game is not building fatigue is an absolute nonsense.

I actually agree about the excessive down time, but it isn't caused by set pieces, it's caused by players using set pieces to grab a breather. Contemporary scrum halves irk me greatly. When the ref eventually gets frustrated and says "use it", there's usually a further period of scrum half statue time. I've noticed that South African scrum halves are prone to taking a brief pause as routine when recycling during phase play and it does nothing but give the defence time to reset. I don't know why they do it because they seldom use the time to notice a mismatch on the blind side or an open patch to kick into.

    • @Wildkard
      @Wildkard  Před 4 měsíci

Honestly i never thought players getting a breather in a brutal game of rugby is an issue. Unless its last 10mins and they are clearly wasting time to run the clock down. I think its how u market it to the fans, if the commentators dont like the sport and wants to watch league they can find and bash every little thing. Look at ufc 10-15 years ago people thought grapling was wasting time, and wanted to get rid of it, but ufc realised that wouldnt be mma anymore it would be just kick boxing. So they had people like joe rogan really explain the ground game and now people love it.

I will say this. John Kirwan and Matt Williams are cut from the same cloth. They both don't have great coaching track records. Kirwan coached the blues and they never won anything. he coached Japan and also couldn't win anything. He stuffed up as a coach now he is stuffing up as a commentator. The main reason why is that people with their track records have no imagination nor any smarts about them. And in their minds the thing which stops them from being successful is the environment. NZ pundits cant win fair so whats next, change the rules of the game to get better the odds for their team, they just a bunch of sore losers. Don't get me wrong i have mad respect for NZ rugby supporters, but these pundits are a joke and sound like a broken gramophone player after the world cup loss

The only reason John Kirwan is actively trying to start a movement to do away with scrums, is because the Springboks are generally dominant in scrummaging - If NZ won the world cup, this wouldn't even have been a discussion lol

sadly the kiwi has a very good scrum right now, kirwan wouldnt know cos he probably close his eyes when its scrum time

normally I only do this watching basketball, but I just muted the TV and put music on. basketball goes great with almost any music cause theres so much stuff it has to sync up amazingly every once in a while. rugby doesnt suit music too well. but it was much more nejoyable listening to spotify

Nice shout out to Angus Gardiner. I'm a Samoan Kiwi living in Oz and I've always thought he's a very good ref and always clear. I remember once a few years back he actually admitted he was wrong on a call when asked by a player and handled the situation calmly and made the right call. Many other refs are too stubborn or proud to do that.

@@Wildkard true, Barnes had a great career as a ref across HEAPS of classic games. Crazy to think a lot of Kiwis wanted him sacked after the 2007 Rwc, where All Blacks lost in the quarters to France. Crazy to think how long ago that was.
