  • Roger takes us flying in his prized Zenair STOL CH701 "Sky Jeep" that he built in the 1990's, demonstrating the light sport aircraft's outstanding short field capability and great handling characteristics. This aircraft is powered by a 100-hp Rotax 912 ULS engine.

    Diverted from a business trip in STL and drove a rental car ~100 mi to Mexico MO just to fly this aircraft years ago. SO MUCH FUN. It really does fly like Roger says, beyond light and super nimble, I loved it. I've NEVER flown anything close to this maneuverable, except hang gliders which I flew for years. Side note, super small town, got there and sitting down in the BBQ joint (I think there was only one) being served by 4 people (place was almost empty on a Friday night), me asking if there was any music in town. After much discussion amongst themselves they recommended a place and after inquiry, I found out is was someone playing music in their garage! You just got to love small towns.

    good morning.
    I want to know if you have a video on the ZENITH 750 plane taking off and landing with (3) three occupants?
    It would be interesting to see his behavior
    THANK YOU

    How reliable is the Rotax. It runs fairly high rpm. Would it be feasible to stick a continental in it with 100 hp or would that be too heavy?

    • @sebastienheintz
      @sebastienheintz Před 8 lety +3

      +Joseph Howard
      The Rotax 912 series engines have proven themselves to be very reliable. The Continental is a little heavy for the CH 701, but suitable for the larger STOL CH 750.

    Great plane, I used to fly it with Rotax 503 and a passenger, too bad is slow flyer

    • @zenithac
      @zenithac  Před 3 lety

      It is designed as a STOL (short take-off and landing) aircraft. The high lift characteristics of the design mean that it is also relatively slow. Most of us are already where we want to be (in the air!) when we're flying the STOL

    • @mikemiller3936
      @mikemiller3936 Před 2 lety

      Dummy. Not everyone wants to fly fast if it was up to me I would fly just above the tree line 25 miles an hour if you’re not big of a hurry book a commercial flight I want to fly like a bird that’s the whole idea of flying this is a world class playing because it does what it was designed to do fly low and slow but if it was up to me … If I was capable I would design something to fly even slower

  • @jeffsnider3588
    @jeffsnider3588 Před 6 lety

    Ever consider design changes for improved safety? Bush planes land in somewhat rough places and to reduce fire hazard from a crash I would consider external fuel tank that would break away and distance itself from the plane with sufficient impact.

  • @Frank-ue6eg
    @Frank-ue6eg Před 5 lety +1

    When you think about it, it's remarkable how far ahead of the times they were back in 1998 by equipping that aircraft with a totally electric propulsion system - no fuel other than what the batteries and solar panels deliver. Kudos to Zenith for leading the way on that!

    • @zenithac
      @zenithac  Před 5 lety +1

      6' 1"
      There are definitely taller pilots who can fit in the CH701 but how comfortable will depend on your height distribution. The CH750 series with adjustable seats is better adapted for taller and bigger pilots.

    • @zenithac

      The later model STOL CH 701's have added rear baggage area, and belly cargo pods are popular with campers, and of course the STOL CH 750 and four-seat STOL CH 801 are the big brothers to the original STOL CH 701.
      Enjoy your Cub :)
