Yes, crazy to me that to this day, DoD1.3 (besides its old looks) can stand up to any FPS out there, as far as gameplay goes... Solely rated on how fun something is, anyway.

@@boogie5 Not sure what MFOTS used to stand for, but it was the user name of the guy that started the BFE tournament.
"Battle For Europe is a simulated war for control of Europe, where Campaigns are waged by the Allied or Axis forces to conquer all of the territories in Europe. Think of this game as a cross between a strategy board game and an FPS, allowing you to submerge yourself in realistic WWII environments and strategy."
Players signed up and were divided between axis/allies and were then subdivided into several divisions. Each tournament lasted like 6 weeeks with maybe multiple 12hr battles a week. Each country on the map was represented by a custom map and certain divisions would attack or defend certain territories each week. Victors would conquer the given territory or country on the campaign map. I believe whomever held the most territory at the end of the 6 weeks would be the overall victors. It was a lot of fun!
@@shish4197 Ok.. YES, I DO in fact remember this! I was subbed in a couple of times actually... Yeah, that whole "campaign" aspect is so cool, and has been around since almost the beginning of internet gaming!

I am surprised we have yet to really see many dev teams implement this exact thing like, actually into the game itself! Red Orchestra: Rising Storm 2 did it, but that's about it! I know Hell Let Loose was kicking the idea around... I personally, would love to see muh baby, Squad 44, have a "Campaign Mode"! Man, that would be so cool! 🤓🪖
@@boogie5 Yeah, I played in Operation Market Garden with the OSS back when that campaign was going on in PS. Probably the closest thing I've experience to the old BFE days.

I know right... THIS exact topic is what my channel is mostly about! DAY OF INFAMY for example!!! ...Was an INCREDIBLE modern rendition of, homage to, Day of Defeat! It was SOOOOO frickin' good man! As if Day of Defeat: Source never happened, and instead of going an arcadey direction for the sequel, they went with a more realistic approach!
For me, DOI is the true DoD successor!
Don't get me wrong, DoD:S is a great and fun game! BUT, it's really just the same game with a fresh paint job...

still a great game! as far as the competitive feel of it goes I'd compare it to Super Smash Brother Melee in that it's a 20 year old game with a niche competitive scene where the gameplay, skill, tactics, meta, etc. are all still evolving. lots of high level fraggers still playing the game. great vid boogie

I would have to agree with you.... For me anyway, it is definitely a battle between Age of Empires II: (Definitive Edition) and Day of Defeat!
Now, if we are "stuck on an island somewhere with only ONE game", I might... MIGHT have to go with AOE2! 😜🪖

Man that was such an homage to Day of Defeat.. It still "clings to life" as a "daed gaem"! I still try and catch the occasional PVP match when a server actually populates...
@@boogie5 I tried it several years ago around launch or shortly after. it had a good ww2 atmosphere but didn't have the quake like, arena shooter movement and gun play that I love about day of defeat .so it just didn't come close in my mind. I'm all about the high pace, fast reflex arena based shooter feel. i love the ww2 elements but my favorite thing about dod is that it moves and feels a lot like quake but with ww2 skins and a unique respawn based game mode.
DoD might be an old game, but it's competitive 6v6 mode is 2nd to none. Valve should really think about coming out with a DoD 2 with 6v6 comp mode as well as keeping the 32v32 pub modes for the folks that still love that gameplay style. Great video.

Wow what a blast from the past. Still remember when DoD first released, we played it solid along side CS for years! Good old days, enjoyed it more as the market wasn’t saturated with mediocre crap as it is today. Avalanche man… what a brutal map 🤣

The OG DOD was the first multiplayer game i played on PC. I was hooked! So many sick maps that never made it to source DOD.
Also Boogie, did you ever play Joint Operations back in the day? Had 100 player servers back before it was cool, with day long matches sometimes on gigantic maps, circa 2004 I think?. I still have crazy nostalgia for that game. I wonder if that game is still alive somewhere.

It's been a LONG TIME since I played, but I had maybe 3500 hours into DoD before Source took over. I remember the days before I had a good internet connection, I had to install the mod from a PC Gamer magazine CD. The first version I played was very different than what is on Steam now. I was playing with Sturmbot, and on a LAN with my friend and I manually made waypoints for all sorts of custom maps. The map dod_festung will forever be one of the greatest maps made for any WW2 FPS multiplayer game.
Yeah man... the ole 56k! One time, I was in a StarCraft tournament FINAL when my mom picked up the phone and booted me off!
This is back when women would talk on the phone for like 4 hours straight! lol
