  • I'm not sure of the year, but Court House which is under construction here was completed in 1992. Also there are Chevy Impala cabs from 94', so I suppose those shots were taken in different years.
Along with late 30' and early 70' the best peroid of this city in my opinion.

I moved to NYC June 1 1992 from Augusta, Ga. Wow the city was so 80s. I was only 20 years old. Bittersweet memories for sure... 9/11 destroyed so much.

In the early 1990s, it was still the later half of the 1980s in terms of fashion, culture etc. I have always felt that I would only like to visit NYC if i had a time machine, 1985-93 is the era. Wall street money, worldly art and culture, upper east side decadence, mafia hits in mid town Manhattan, crack cocaine being smoked by people in alleys and in big financial board rooms, seeds porn shops in times square, rampant crime, creepy subway. When new york city was new york city. I remember my dad went there on business in 1989, I was 7, he got me a lawrence taylor starting lineup as a souvenir. He said the sun setting against the buildings in the city was nice. I grew up in Chicago so I know what living in a major city is like but that era of Nyc is intriguing.

Is it just me, or did the Twin Towers fit in PERFECTLY with the NYC skyline? I try hard to like Freedom Tower, but it just doesn't seem to go well with the NYC skyline. I miss the Towers. They were so bad ass. Freedom Tower seems a bit lame and doesn't seem to have the "balls" the Twin Towers had.

Their unique design can be attributed to the architectural genius Minoru Yamasaki. He envisioned every detail of the original World Trade Center, from the Twin Towers to the surrounding lowrise buildings, the plaza and its sculptures, and all the plantations, as well as the miscellaneous details, including the materials selected. All of this made the old WTC what it was.
The new WTC doesn't "fit" the void left by the events of 9/11.

George Frey Hi George, nice to meet you. I never judge a nation based on one person. I think everyone should do the same. About the USA, i always like United States, i always like suburs . I have a weakness for suburbs since i saw the movie Home Alone, when i was a kid and i like how you guys decorate your houses during Christmas time in USA. In Europe is the same, but american people give much more attention to details than us. USA is a great nation. Beautiful places, very polite people and very kind. I never visit USA as we, european people need a Visa to enter in USA. I hope one day to visit your country and why not, drink a beer . Cheers

An update! So here is the deal in the early 90s digital motion was just starting to come out (720-1080p). What we're seeing is early capture probably meant to showcase the picture quality. A big clue was that the aspect ratio for this footage was not in the customary 4:3 for the time so that ruled out tape and even 35mm.

I would have loved to had met her back then and had the chance to say hello to her. What a kind and lovely woman she was - and man could she sing like an angel. I attended a Society of Motion Picture Engineers convention in Los Angeles around that time and I remember seeing a High Definition TV prototype and on it they were showing an incredibly detailed Columbia Pictures logo with the clouds moving about slowly, it looked so detailed and incredible that it was like looking through a window into another world or room, I'm not exaggerating it was that good. I think even 4K HD TVs pale in comparison, monitor was kind of a thick flat screen, about I'd say 40 or so inches. Never forget it, this NY HD footage reminds me of that, though I'd just ad my two cents to this amazing and marvelous footage. - Gary

There was such feeling of newness and rawness of things in America from 2000 and before. That couple at 1:43 just look so genuine and happy. This was life before 9/11, life before political correctness, life before 3rd wave feminism, and thin skinned social justice warriors. Americans just lived - there were gender roles, and people were happier. I was only 14 years old in 1994, but even I can tell things were better back then.

I was born in 1998, and I wish New York, preferably most of the world, was still like this.
As a Gen-Z’er who has just turned 25, I really hate how destructive and toxic everything has gotten. 9/11 saw the destruction of the Twin Towers and led to a war in the Middle East that took too long to end and was all for nothing, and cancel culture runs rampant like a plague, and our country is a politically divided clown-show, it almost feels like something out of a Harry Turtledove novel.
The 90’s showed how promising the future was, and honestly, had 9/11 ended up being a foiled terrorist plot, that feeling of the last decade of the 20th century would’ve continued on for another few decades. Probably at least until 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic, but still… things would’ve been so much better. It would’ve been better to have the 90’s feeling end slowly with a health crisis rather than immediately with a terrorist attack that should never have happened at all.
