Agreed. 35mm prime is my go to lens for most shots. 20 and 85 for the rest.
I shot with fixed lens medium format cameras for about 10 years before I bought my first 35mm small format film camera. That camera came with a 50mm lens. After using the 50mm for two years, I decided to replace it with a 35mm lens because the 50mm focal length was "too telephoto" for my usual subject matter, my personal taste, and my shooting style. The 35mm lens has been the best lens for me ever since.
I now use the following:
35mm f/1.4 Zeiss Distagon in a 21/35/90mm kit on my Leica M6 and M10 rangefinders
35mm f/1.4 Nikkor in a 35/85/180mm kit on my Nikon SLRs
35mm f/2.5 Nikkor in a 35/80mm kit on my Nikonos III underwater camera
You are 1000% right about the 35mm lenses!!! The 1st thing I did when I bought the s5iix was to "get rid" of the 20-60 (for the aperture and the unacceptable stiff
zoom ring) and buy the 24-105 and 35mm. ALL low light shots are now taken with this lens.
I use an S5 and S1 for still photography and the S 35/1.8 is definitely my first choice for a prime lens. I do often use the 20-60 for walk-abouts if I want to carry only one lens. However if I go back through my Lightroom catalog and bring up all my 20-60mm images, well over 60% were taken in the 30-40mm range. So, for me, there is obviously something comfortable about that range. And the 35/1.8 is such an excellent lens that it only make sense to make it my main prime lens.
Move to Melbourne, Australia, Scott! I'm watching your video with the windows open, it's 30.2 degrees (Celsius) outside, fresh breezes, little to no humidity...a perfect late-summer/ early-autumn day (as long as you're not doing manual work in the sun)! More seriously, just discovered your channel, and instantly love your sympathetic delivery, as well as the interesting insights. Looking forward to watching more. Thanks so much, and stay dry!
Australia is on my bucket list. Thanks so much 📸
Each photographer has several "focal length" that they "see" the world with, and to tell the stories that they see. I did an audit of my photographs (i recommend everyone do that!) and I was very very surprised !! 70% at 160mm, 20% at 28mm and 10 % at 70mm .. since then I have bought my lenses to cover those focal lengths, allocating funds accordingly.
Great video mate, 35mm lenses are dope 😍
I had an Olympus E-M10 with the 17mm f/1.8 and loved it. I sold it a couple of years ago and regret it. The 34mm equivalent just always suited my eye.
Awesome video. I recently just purchased the Leica 35mm Summicron SL f/2 for my s5ii. I am very excited to have a 35mm prime in my kit, and you just nailed the coffin in that my decision to get a 35mm prime was the right one!
Great video scott , as weddign filmmaker i shoot only on s5mk2 my go to lens is the lumix 24/105 f4 its always on my camera i have wide and have zoom for speeches etc f4 is a bit of a bummer prefer 2.8 but would be massive but with dual native iso just keep my iso at 4000 and bring the shadows up and not worry about it i also have 85mm f1.8 for dertain moment's etc but as im adding photo work to me pacakges ive been looking at 35mm for this reason buf then i think well i have the 24 / 105
Man I really want this lens, just picked the S5II X up a few weeks ago and have the 20-60, 14-28, 24, and 50, but something about the 35 is really tempting me to swap the 50 for it.
I was going to say - you’ve never used a 35mm GM. Then I heard the disclaimer.
35mm. So hot right now.
