- These are some rough boards I did for Warrior of the Mind! I really love the Epic Musical so far and this is defiantly one of my favourite songs from the saga as of now. I plan on cleaning this up in the coming months but instead of leaving this animatic to rot on my hard drive until I get the time to clean them, I decided to upload the rough version. Thank you for watching!
I used designs from the Hades video game for both Odysseus and Athena (loosely) and the boar is from Princess Mononoke :D

Placing Warrior Of The Mind after/in the middle of Just A Man is literally so perfect oh my gosh. I love how you portrayed older and younger Odysseus so differently and how Athena treats Ody!!! This is a masterpiece! 🤩

IKR!! It creates a whole new perspective to the song and I LOVE it!!!
I think it fits as a first song better. Like, Odysseus is in the Greek and camp he gets called by Athena. It introduces who Odysseus is and the expectations placed on him.
The boy and the horse is a pretty epic introduction, but the tone shift from one to the other won't do much. Meanwhile, placing it before or after Just a Man doesn't fit at all. We go from upbeat to just murdering a baby, or from struggling to murder a baby to upbeat.
Right now it only exists in a kind of vacuum, mostly as a set up from My Goodbye (which is one of the best songs, but also its placement is a bit awkward since Athena apparently goes from 1 to 100 fit of rage).
I love how you choose to place it in a different part of the story. Also the moment when older Odysseus kinda questions if his younger version sees him is super interesting
And it's a great way to remind us gods are omnipotent and omnipresent, so of course she's meeting young Odysseus at the same time as she's teaching his older version a lesson.
I love how happy he looks fighting the boar
Damn, she really did just yeeted the guy in the depths of his mind... Being chokeslammed into the flashbacks was not something i expected.

I love how you've played with the past and the present, overlapping them and having them influence eachother, and also you've experimented with perspective and space. Also the fluid identities of the gods - how Athena changes in size and shape much like how the Ancient Greeks believed the gods to be larger than mortals but also able to shapeshift.
That slam at 0:40 and Athena's badass boss frame at 2:30 are my absolute favs, but also OMG THE MOVEMENT WTF!!! I love this!!

This is fantastic! I love how their dynamic in this one is less friendly and way more flawed. It leaves some interesting area for character growth/tension, especially with Athena.
In this animatic, Athena is manipulative, threatening, and borderline apathetic, and Odysseus seems genuinely wary of her(for good reason, being literally thrown around and threatened).
Great movement and expressions!
I really like teh movement in this and Athena flexing her godly powers by teaching old Odysseus a lesson while also meeting young Ody for the first time is genius!! Also young Ody reminds me of Zagreus and I love it!!!
Oh man I love love love this. Your giant Athena placing him on a chessboard really emphasizes that she's still very much a god and just as manipulative of humanity as all the others. I hope to see the final piece!!!

3:12 I loved the idea of Athena teaching war tactics to Odysseus as a literal chess game, not giving an identity to any of the pieces more than their figure's names, to then jump to the present and have Odysseus realize that the "King" he slayed with ease in the past has now not only a name (Astyanax - literally meaning "high king") but is also just a baby. Probably my favorite animatic on this song!!
Very clever take putting Odysseus in the nursery during Warrior of the Mind. I've always been of the mind that even though that Athena would have also been there and would have told Odysseus the exact same thing Zeus did about what to do about that baby
I love this animatic so much, especially the "chess" part after odysseus killed the boar! It is so unique!
I can't tell if that was a flashback to a younger Odysseus, or Athena just straight up showing Odysseus his replacement if he doesn't follow through on killing Astyanax. I love it.
This is so creative like I love the story telling with Athena starting off showing Odysseus the infant then he showed her the pass with the boar and him meeting Athena. It’s shows how she is reminding him how she originally “designed” him to be. ❤❤❤
The action choreography is crazy on this.

I don’t even know what to focus on! like, the Athena fighting segment is stunning, I *love* the pottery art vignette of the boar and ody running from it towards camera… hnghhhhhhn. special shout out to the match cuts tho. i see them and they’re beautiful and perfect and will live in my mind forever

The animation is so fluid and I love it so much, I think even in rough concepts this is one of my favorite animations of warrior of the mind!
I am loving it? like the way you included things such as Athena not only being a goddess of strategy and war, but also of weaving? Amazing, love the fluidity, the context in which you put the whole thing, it definitely fits, the way she pulled him into that mind-realm, love it all
This genuinely is one of my favorite animatics I’ve seen for this show, SO dynamic and action-packed!! The character interactions are so fun!! The designs are so well done!! I also LOVE this change in placement of where this song falls in the story timewise, I honestly think it makes SO much more sense and really establishes a long-standing relationship better with Odysseus and Athena. Phenomenal work

This was just STELLAR in so many ways ohmygod. Placing warrior of the mind before just a man is such a strong narrative move. It is our first reminder of what Jorge said is a main theme in Epic: ruthlessness. Theoretically this would leave open arms as the closing song for the Troy saga as the final song. Which is just so hopeful and nice .. Knowing just how intense his punishment will be after the Cyclops saga makes the tragedy extra bitter in the best way.
So we see Odysseus hesitate to kill Hector's son. Athena jumps in to remind him of what he needs to be: calculated and ruthless. And right away you can see that their dynamic isn't equal. Everything in Athena's body language and movement signals that she is dealing with her subordinate; a petulant child almost when she holds his cheek.
The scene with the boar is SO FUCKING GOOD the movement is dynamic and exciting. Odysseus is bright eyed, excited, ready to take on the world! Willing to take the risk of not just bluffing, but of possibly insulting the goddess before him by refusing his name. You can imagine how this snarky kid became the general that ended Troy. I love the transition from Athena to Odysseus implying he acted out that whole fight sequence lol At the end we're again reminded of their dynamic and the differences in how they see their relationship. Odysseus casually throwing his arm around her and Athena shrugging it off is great.
And then that last scene with the pillars and chess pieces!! He is excited to start his journey and Athena unceremoniously picks him up by his scruff (have I already mentioned I love the expressions?) to put him on the path she needs him to take. You can see every quality that makes Odysseus a warrior of the mind as he gets closer to slaying the king piece. Meanwhile Athena is always watching, again emphasising they are not equal. Odysseus is just as much a chess piece as the other figures on the pillars, while Athena is firmly positioned as a player.
The final shot with Odysseus standing over the cradle with the sword in hand is so striking!! And I don't just mean the lightning in the background showing that Zeus is watching too.
Okay essay done I promise jsbsjs All that to say that I think you have made something truly interesting and beautiful and I can't wait to see what else you're going to make :]

Firstly, the timeline placement where you're putting Warrior of the Mind right before he is told to kill the baby, a new take that I love so much!!
The way Athena is so rough with Odysseus is also amazing and refreshing to see! The animation of her throwing him is so well done!
The detail of her past accomplishments on pedestals creates such a cool frame, and it's a fantastic use of space and height.
OMG WHEN SHE WEAVES THE LITTLE PICTURE!! It's freaking beautiful and such a small detail that makes a huge difference.
In general, the use of the pottery style is such a cute detail, and then it fades straight into the gorgeous art of young Odysseus. (Your landscaping is so freaking pretty omg)
You have such beautiful understanding of the way characters move and flow, and the fight and action scenes are hypnotizing! I would love to see what you could do with more frames/animation vs animatic!!
The chessboard detail is just another one of those details that adds so much to the story!! (I think im just stupid but i dont see exactly where it transitions from young to older odysseus but i love that it happens there ) The idea that the chessboard is odysseus proving that he's still got it is really cool

The movement and pacing of this was off the charts, and the usage of a chess board for the training grounds was galaxy brain. You’re fantastic!
Athena is brilliant because she wraps in a glamorous, nostalgic song the words "kill the baby."
This storyboard is such *chef's kiss* I would LOVE to see a finished project. because it gives such character to Athena being so detached as a goddess bent on putting feelings to the side would. I just--UGH, love it.

I love the way you have drawn them interacting, with each other and the mindscape around them. I adored the way you put Odysseus on a sort of elevated chess board with Athena as the actual player rather than the piece. Also the call backs to the way younger Odysseus handled the boar in the way current Odysseus leapt from pillar to pillar. Very fun.
This is pretty much hands down the most underrated animatic I’ve ever seen. This is incredible!

I can’t even begin to describe how brilliant the decision you made in putting this right before ‘just a man’ because oh my god???? THE MOVEMENT TOO!!! I love how fluid and kinetic you make everything (especially in the fight or running scenes!!) and I also love the detailed backgrounds!!!! Your Athena and Odysseus designs are also so so SO cool!! This whole thing is amazing! I love how you make it feel so grounded in different environments throughout the whole song, and the character acting is impeccable! Just the small interactions between Ody and Athena like her poking him with the arrow and him swiping it away are both creative and a great glance into their dynamic! Also you absolutely killed it with the fight choreo/movement in general, this was an absolute TREAT to watch and I can't wait to see more from you!

Love the lightning at the beginning thet goes with the music! And the retrospection to the parents putting the baby to sleep! And the designs and Athena changing her size and appearing from the gray shape and young Odysseus looking like Zagreus
Frankly the "rough" version seems perfectly ready to throw at a team. Beautiful work :D
I think this may yet be my favorite animatic interpretationn of this song like, ever. When I first heard this I placed it right after just a man too. This is so great! I love how dynamic and fluid the scenes are, they're so animatic too. Great work!!!

The dynamic movement you've created during the action scenes is AMAZING and so fun to watch! The scenery and how the characters interact with it is also stunning, I loved how Athena created a tapestry, with her fingers, that transitioned in to boar scene and how Athena removed an arrow from the boar and pointed it at Odysseus. Young Odysseus' design reminded me of Zag from the Hades game which made me smile and made sense since Odysseus is also a prince😆All in all, an AWESOME animatic!😆🤩😄

Prob artistic liberty. Epic still a concept album, so technically, nothing is set on stone. I kinda like this approach too lol always wondered why Athena didn't interfere with him not wanting to kill Troy's prince
This is amazing and incredible!! The fluidity of movement and Athena picking the young version up and running that insane obstacle course and the two of them gleefully standing in a large spreading pool of the boar’s blood; SOAKED in it while the old one watches and NOW understands war and what it means to shed blood and the crack of lightening as Odysseus resolves to kill Scamandrius!! Incredible work; thank you so much for making and sharing this WIP!
I keep forgetting the only difference between Ares and Athena is aspects of battle. Both are still stuck up and cruel
Ares can be kinda fairer than Athena, as he appreciates strength of character more.

Wanted to comment below to say. I love what you added to all the other animations of this song. That story bit where present version having to watch on top of the baby parts.
The cold-blooded, child-killer Odysseus in the Odyssey is a lot different from the Odysseus in EPIC 😂

I never really understood the placement of warrior of the mind after open arms, but DAMN it fits before just a man so well
Because Just A Man is already Odysseus questioning himself + making himself do something he doesn’t want to do, but still within the realm of Athena’s approval (goddess of war and wisdom - he killed the baby to avoid future conflict and strife vs letting his heart convince him to let the child live)
In Open Arms, Polites is talking Odysseus down from being a Warrior and convincing him to Feel again (“You could show a person that you trust them/
When you stop and lower your guard”) which is the Opposite of Athena’s teachings (polites in convincing him to listen his heart not his mind) and so warrior of the mind is her being like hey Don’t do that actually you know better.
I think warrior of the mind would detract from just a man if it was played before/after just a man just by how its already zeus putting the pressure on. It would switch the balance of which gods are in effect so to speak

This is an amazing upcoming animatic! While I was somewhat bothered about where you placed the purpose of the song, it still has the same vibes as where it was originally placed, so regardless of story placement, I do not care! The animation and the way Athena portrayed the story of young Odysseus to older Odysseus is amazing! I'm so excited!

This is probably my favourite warrior of the mind animatic the staging is excellent and the stuff Athena does is so creative it really differentiates her as a magical being from the humans I can tell a lot of thought went into this, really really good job!!

Wrong god, technically, but it fits incredibly well, and honestly, it shows Athena is actually commited to her role as a mentor, though in a very messed up way. Congratulations on your work.
