Back in the 50s, before people board surfed at the Wedge, it was bodysurfers only. Being the first woman who regularly bodysurfed the Wedge (yes, really!) I can tell you I actually got my one piece suit completely sucked off my body in the shore break. Fortunately, some kind soul brought me a towel!
@joalincontroll Actually, I am 78, and I was in my teens, about 14, so it was about 1959, to be accurate. It was in the 50s, but obviously late 50s now that I think about it. I moved to Hawaii (Kaua'i) and bodysurfed into my 60s, at which time I moved to the mainland to be around for my grandchildren. I still have my Vipers, and given the opportunity, I would still go out! I hope I live to 92! It looks promising!
@joalincontroll Thanks! Sounds like you had a fun time, too. I haven't been back to the Wedge for decades. I can't even imagine the crowds now! Also, the boards, although I guess they have times when it is bodysurf only. Maybe we will bump into each other one day! Aloha!

@@BEEFSTV -You are welcome! It was a fun time! No crowds, either! I can't tell you how many Churchills were lost there. I moved to Hawaii and bodysurfed into my 60s until I came back to the mainland. I still have my Vipers with ankle leashes!!! And I still would go out, given the chance. No Fear!

Ripped a ligament in my neck in 88 and ended up in the hospital for a week. Didn't hit my head on the bottom just got spun in the shore pound real hard.

Years ago in the late 80s a friend took me to the wedge to surf and I thought it was like any mother surf spot. But when we got there it was a huge cold day and i took one look at the wave and noped my way into setting on the beach just watching everyone else get wrecked. I was ok butni didnt have the skills for that size or wave structure. I knew my limits.

I am surprised by all the boarders there now, I started knee boarding there in the early 70s and rarely saw a surfboard.

This just doesn’t look fun to me but the RC surfer was awesome. He was getting rag dolled just like the real surfers. There just no way to make it out of this wave without getting bodied.
60+ years of surfing probably did less damage to my body than the half dozen times I bodywhomped the wedge. Even Sunset Beach and Pipeline wipeouts are mellow compared to da wedge!!
