- PATTI LABELLE & THE BLUEBELLES - ALL OR NOTHING. RECORD LABEL: ATLANTIC 45-2311. YEAR 1965. WRITTEN BY LORI BURTON & PAMELA SAWYER. PRODUCED BY BERT BERNS. ARRANGED BY ARTIE BUTLER. GROUP MEMBERS ARE: PATTI LABELLE, CINDY BIRDSONG (BOTH PREVIOUSLY FROM THE ORDETTES), SARAH DASH & NONA HENDRYX (BOTH PREVIOUSLY FROM THE GROUP THE DEL-CAPRIS). CINDY BIRDSONG LEFT IN 1968 TO REPLACE FLORENCE BALLARD AS A MEMBER OF THE SUPREMES.
Ms. Patti was and is amazing. I saw her perform in a large theater and she really didn’t need a microphone. Powerful!
She is the phenomenal star she is the truth
Yes, very operatic.
This is a stupendous track. I could never understand why it wasn't a massive hit. Patti gives it everything she's got.
Atlantic Records was too busy promoting Aretha Franklin. I agree that this should have been a huge hit
@@drummerc1795 you hit the nail on the head. Aretha emphasis like Diana at MOTOWN
But this is from 1966…Atlantic wouldn’t have been promoting Aretha because she was with Columbia Records then; she didn’t sign with Atlantic Records until 1967. This wasn’t a bigger hit because Atlantic didn’t know what to do with Patti & The Bluebelles and didn’t push/promote this song like they should have.
@@shaunjohnson6484 I know Wikipedia isn’t always accurate but it says that 1966 was the year that Aretha left Columbia and went to Atlantic. My comment was meant about the Atlantic years in general. The Bluebelles put out some good stuff during the Atlantic years but many feel that the Bluebelles were put on the back burner once Aretha started to pump out hit records.
@@drummerc1795 Perseverance is the best answer I can proffer. Magnificent in any manner.
I LOVE PATTI, NONA, SARAH, & CINDY , since first seeing them LIVE at The UPTOWN THEATER in 1963 !!
They should have been so much bigger! Everybody held their ownPatti, Sara, Nona, and Cindy had some beautiful harmonies!
I feel so cheated never hearing this b4. Patti was always the bomb.
Another great clip!
My uncle was a small time record producer back in the 60’s and 70’s as well as an early mobile DJ. I was over his house one time when he was cleaning out his basement and he found a receipt book from back when he hired Patti Labelle to sing back up on a song. This was way before she was famous and he said that they had to make her stand back away from the mic in order to not have her voice drown out the other to ladies singing back up.
Very interesting story. Thank you for sharing it
I LOVE this record!!!! Perfect blend of Soul and pop
My favorite Patti LaBelle and Bluebells song
They put a smile on my face with this tune 💕
Wow look at them pretty ladies Patti nona Sarah and cindy
Sing It Patti & The Bluebelles. Yes 👍... What A Voice 🕊 🕊.
It pisses me off that Patti was told that she was ugly before her nose job. She is so beautiful.
So hautingly beautiful and those strings and drums wow so sweet
She is beautiful and her voice is stunning
Great vocals!!!!!
I first heard about this Performance on the American Bandstand 33 1/3 Anniversary Special in 1985. Kids in the 1990's are listening to Music and they were surprised that shows like American Bandstand were the Shows you did to get your music across.
Just love the way this record breaks ,,,,incredible sound x
Is the film clip from " Where The Action Is ". That music show often had the performers in an outdoor setting. This group deserves more air play on the oldies stations!
So true
I know but it was timing. After The British Invasion came along alot of Girlbands got "Chopped". Ronnie Spector said it best in a Documentary called Girl Groups The Story Of A Sound. In 1967 they went to Europe and worked with Elton John just before he met Bernie Taupin. The Music of Philly is just as strong in England as it is in America where Popstars/Boyband/Girlbands do their version of obscure R & B Songs.
Nona Hendryx is still beautiful.
Patti was a spunky! I love it!
Co-written by Pam Sawyer who would go on to bigger things at Motown, co-writing (with Jimmy Roach)"My Whole World Ended" for David Ruffin. Patty, Nona, Cyndi and Sarah just kill this GREAT composition, Patty takes it to another world. Any mention of great female vocalists must include Ms Patty.
Pam also wrote Love Hangover for Diana Ross that Jermaine Jackson played Bass on.
@@laminage Pam and Jimmy were (as a team) something very, very special.
@@jesincere8589 Yes! Another amazing Songwriter was The Late Linda Creed when she Co Wrote Hits For The Stylistics.
I'm not going to be around for a few weeks so I would like to thank everyone who has been kind enough to drop by, comment or subbed....Hope you all have a lovely Christmas & All The Very Best For 2018.
ILMJXXX thank you and enjoy the holidays
ILMJXXX! Have a great holiday! Thanks for sharing all of these priceless gems with us!!!!
keep posting the videos please . are you still around :)
Wow!!!!
I love Pam Sawyer's work over the years. This (along with My Whole World Ended) one of the more poignant ones tailor made for a Patti LaBelle. The strings from :22 give it a chilling, almost hauntingly pessimistic feeling so well expressed by Patti and Cindy/Sarah's precise high backgrounds while Nona rounds out the lower register. Small wonder no female groups could come near her efforts.
So we’ll said. Couldn’t agree more!
this brings joy to my soul 🎈🎈🎈
love the great Patti LaBelle and of course her bluebelles
Love this song !
R.I.P. Sarah Dash 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
God Bless Sarah Dash who died September 21st 2021. She, Mary Wilson Of The Supremes and Sarah Harding of Girls Aloud (1981-2021) died on September 5th 2021. During her Auditions on Popstars The Rivals she and the other girls did theri Version of Lady Marmalade.
52 years young Patti Labelle fan since I first heard her sound ! I'm going From the Crib To The

Sleep well, Sarah Dash.
It looks like they're wearing the jogging suits from the Dreamer cover, so glad to see another Bluebelle performance here on CZcams, this should've been a hit

Sounds really nice. Never heard it before. I see that Cindy Birdsong, a Supremes member, was with Patti's group at that time.
Nona Hendryx! Wow! i did not know that she was in the Bluebelles! Thank you for putting this on CZcams! Wonderful!
Impresionante
Always been my #1female group. And who really I mean really sounds better ms .R? It was all about the Record label in those days. Period!
How wonderful, thanks a lot for sharing 🙏🌞🌻💌🌺💮☮️
The person to play Patti Laelle has to be a leading lady with character actor skills. A nationwide casting unknown with a all-star cast. Get the best screenplay writer ,best screenplay doctor. No room for mistakes. A score of isn't it a shame. At least 100 costume changes and shoes. have her study the book "The Power of the actor" Tony bars Tony "Bars Acting for the Camera" so that way she'll know everything to do when she on that set. Acting for the camera is a must for some directors don't get directions acting 101 save yourself
Afterwards when Cindy Birdsong "left" they went to Europe where they worked with an up and coming Piano Player from a Group called Bluesology. That of course would be Elton John.
Actually this happened before Cindy left. There are photos of Elton with Cindy and Patti.
@@bradleyscarton3931 I stand corrected. These guys were so great but the timing was so bad.

You done it again Soul at its absolutely perfect best .THANK YOU... THANK YOU Patti Ilove this woman mmmmmm xx
CIndy Birdsong before her Supremes days ..the other girls didn't speak to her for many years.
Understandable when she deserted PATTI LABELLE for MS ROSS
I'm 31 and I love this so much ❤
I have this 45!
What's a 45? (Just kidding).
Patti Labelle and The Bluebells were severely under promoted. Do you hear those vocals? There was not one girl group from the 60’s that were out singing them. None!
r because Patti lacked star quality. She was a sharp soprano that you could find in just about any black baptist church choir across the U.S. If she had star quality, she couldve walked into the headquarters of the major record labels in NYC, sing a few ballads, and be signed on the spot. But her voice had nothing special to it.
@@hinderless5811 her voice was VERY special..hence why it's carried her over so many years and she is STILL Touring....Patti's voice totally stands out and is unique...this is fact.
@@Dion_Mustard Then clearly you can’t read. Patti’s voice was not standout in the 60’s. She was never a franklin or a houston. She didn’t gain star quality until 20 years later in the 80’s whenever her big voice became suited for big stadium extravaganzas like Live Aid.
@@hinderless5811 don't get me wrong I know Aretha was in a league of her own and was Queen of Soul. There's no disputing that, but regardless of whether she was standout in the 60s. she was in the 70s 'Labelle' and IS an icon to this day and has had an incredible voice over the years. She was a power house vocalist, and a very down to earth woman.
@@Dion_Mustard Sure, that may be true…. to an extent. Labelle in the 70’s did gain more recognition and their music was packing good social messages. But the voice was still not a good voice. Her voice in the 70’s was nothing more than an array of unattractive whining noises. Just nasally and not a beautiful sound at all. Look, I do appreciate Labelle. Her dramatic and unique style was very entertaining and the endless range and immense power to her voice always made me sit at the edge of my seat. But she never had a beautiful voice. Accept that. Her voice was sharp and ugly of tone and lacked agility, beauty of tone, with poor ugly phrasing and diction. This is why Labelle was never a world renowned name such as Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston or even Gladys Knight. Labelle has a small black audience in the U.S and maybe a few in germany. This is because most critics see very little artistic beauty in a whole succession of ugly yelling and jumping around….
A flashback song .perfect in morning listening while doing you're daily chores .
Straight into my soul folder
Legendary!!!!
SimplyMJ The Bluebelles were the first black girl group with a headline singer #Goat. The first black R&B girl group to perform live on UK TV. The first black girl group to have a singer leave for a rival singing group. The first, last and only female glam rock group. The first black R&B girl group to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House. And the first black R&B girl group to Grace the cover of Rolling Stone. These ladies are the cornerstone for ( girl group standard) in the 60's.this music history that can't be outdone or one up'd.
NUJK JUHM wonderful tribute thanks
Wow I have waited years for a video like this. They have very few videos around. The other groups had several videos.
Whoever found this clip, thank god for you! I was probably born 15 years later but i am a true bluebells fan
AMEN!! AMEN!! What A Cute Beautiful Video 🕊 🕊
it's a great clip and I can't believe Patti is still touring lol :)
@@Dion_Mustard God bless her
LEGENDS!
Great video of a much under-appreciated group. Even though they had a very large fan base, their commercial success oddly enough didn't fare so well. One correction in the clip description: Cindy Birdsong officially joined the Supremes in July of 1967 after having replaced Florence Ballad as a stand-in as early as April 1967.
Love it so much!!!!!!
well take us on back then ☺️

All or Nothing is a rare cut from Patti & The Bluebelles from 1966 and I believe this clip is from Dick Clark's Where The Action Is series! Happy Holidays to all and God Bless!
Very Good Robert Velez. I was born in 1966 but I love looking at These Performances. Did you know that Lady Marmalade is one of the most Covered Songs in R & B Pop. A Singer from Mississippi named Nanette Workman sang it in French and she became one of French Canada's top Divas, it was also covered by The Irish Family Group The Nolan Sisters, as well as The UK Girl Group The All Saints. It was also Song that was featured on Popstars: The Rivals that the Girls had to audition to as well as Christina Aguilera, Pink, L'il Kim, Mya & Missy Elliott performed on as well.
fantastic song, great to see this clip .. thanks for posting
What a great gift!!! This footage is priceless!
Miss Patti was wearing her signature white nails in the 60's.
Wow! Miss Patty!!!
supergroup
Wow, what a voice, I could listen to that all day 😀
What a treat to see THE ONE, THE ONLY Patti Labelle before Lady Marmalade and her solo career!!!
Greatness!
Luther brought me here years ago at her Bet Walk of Fame performance
Love it more
Thanks for sharing this rare clip! BTW, Cindy Birdsong joined The Supremes in July 1967, replacing Florence Ballard. She'd already substituted for Flo once during a Supremes appearance at The Hollywood Bowl in April 1967, but Florence returned to the group for another 2-1/2 months before finally being let go. Cindy was waiting to go onstage in Las Vegas. Supposedly, Patti, Nona, and Sarah were NOT happy that Cindy decided to quit The Bluebelles in order to join The Supremes. As Cindy supposedly said, going from The Bluebelles to The Supremes was like going from riding in a Ford to riding in a Cadillac. Ultimately, I think Cindy made the right decision!
You Know your Stuff. This was also from Where The Action Is.
You want see some amazing Documentaries about The Rise & Fall Of Groups. Type in the Big Reunion where you see how life was for Boy Bands/Girl Groups of the late 1990's and 2000's one of which was called Girl Thing who were touted to be the next big thing after The Spice Girls and boy did they have a bad ending.
From what I read, Cindy covertly followed the Supremes for most of those 2 and 1/2 months. Patti and the Girls must have suspected something. According to Florence, during those 2 and 1/2 months Cindy always seemed to lurking in dark corners around wherever the Supremes were performing or sitting with dark glasses in the audience ...studying Flo from afar whenever she could. All this put Florence on edge knowing that Cindy had already replaced her at the Hollywood Bowl. It sounds like the movie All About Eve. How Cindy had time to stalk Flo when she was still performing with Patti and the Bluebelles is a mystery.
Also keep in mind that after Diana Ross left The Supremes The Group went slowly downhill to the point that they got Booed off of the stage in 1977. Cindy later worked as a Clerk at Motown Records then as an X Ray Technician at UCLA Medical Center where she went by her married name then at last report an Evangelist.
I agree with you to a point. The Supremes started a slow downhill spiral even before Diana left. It started as soon as Flo was put out of the Supremes. When Flo was with the group, The Supremes consistently scored #1 hits. Right after Flo left, the Supremes came out with Forever Came Today which barely made the top 30 (#28) and then Some Things You Never Get Used To (#30) and then finally a #1 song.... Love Child) but then another long year of forgettable minor hits before another #1 song. Flo took with her the spirit of the group.
- Patty never fails to deliver, from back then to now, she blows 'em all out the water! ,,,1 thing though, it's a good thing she got the nose job.
I'll add my vote to the hat and say HELL YEAH THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HIT!!!
I never heard this cut. Great tune.

Absolute PERFECTION. Have a lovely Christmas baby XXX
Patti Labelle had a good following. more than Aretha at this time.
Patti was always soulful
AND THE GIRLS HARMONIES WERE GREAT
You know I never thought of that but you may be right because neither one of them were really popular at this time but it wouldn't be for long because Aretha was coming to Atlantic at this time to shut everyone down and make Atlantic Aretha's house! I do wonder how many times Did Patti Run into Aretha during the time when they were at Atlantic?
Ron Williams I imagine ReRe snubbed her the same way she did at the White House performance lol. I bet ReRe gave Jerry (Wexler) an ultimatum - give Patti the boot or I walk. How else do you explain Atlantic dropping the great Patti Labelle after only one album.. lol
Dermaine Dibbins I think the Bluebelles were dropped from Atlantic because they wanted to focus on Aretha Franklin and may have thought that having a group with a lead singer that could rival Aretha’s voice might get in the way of making Aretha the huge star that she became. That’s just speculation on my part. What I do know is that the Bluebelles were signed to Atlantic records for about 3 years. Numerous singles were released with only 2 having limited chart success. So, it is not surprising that Atlantic gave up on them. What kept that group together (the Bluebelles) was that they were so amazing vocally that they were in demand for live shows. They were so underrated as the Bluebelles and as Labelle as well. I was pleased to see that after Labelle broke up, Sarah Dash was the first one to have a hit record.
@@ronwilliams717Nonsense.
Aretha Franklin was already a very popular and successful artist in 1966. Way more than Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles could dream of. She had been recording and releasing music since the late 1950s and had achieved significant success in the 1960s… which made her a popular performer in a variety of settings, including concerts, clubs, and television appearances.
@@hinderless5811 I was talking about where they were in 1966 . Pretty much the same , In 1967 Aretha killed it that was her break. Patti would struggle for the next few years. Yeah the bluebelles they couldn’t chart to save their lives.
Dont make me go to film school or go to L.A. and push for the movie. I haven't seen her in years. Such a imperial singer. One of the executive producers of the reunion album became my private Consultin. The late the great Kenneth Reynolds. To cast Patti get a unknown build those with a name around her. Release release the film in the month of February. That way it wont get lost. The director must listen to every song that she has ever recorded in the group and as a solo artist. Open the open the movie up when they're in the station wagon with mr. Montague and his wife and their traveling through the chitlin circuit in the south. Put that scene in black and white. Flash back scene when she was that shy little girl in the classroom. Put romance in the movie when her and Armstead met. Hotel sene with Sara and Nona. In the coming attraction have the score theme of isn't it a shame playing in the movie house. Put a little a little laughter in the trailer the group that James Brown pulled the curtain down on. Family senes and and others scenes that's Patti LaBelle should have that call in the screenwriting. Let me stop. Lol
you must have read the book don't block the blessings cuz I remember all that you're talkin about just wow I would love to see a movie especially before I leave this world

They do sound like the Supremes. I see why they had beef....
When these ladies leave the stage everybody pissed off because they already know we screwed
Lady Marmalade also holds a very important part in Pop Music. It probably has more Cover Versions Internationally than any other Song in R & B. The UK Girl Group The All Saints did their version, American Born/Canadian Resident Nanette Workman who could have been as big as Celine Dion if she chose to sing in English, then of course there was Pink, Mya, L'il Kim, Missy Elliott, and Christina Aguilera who did their version. Then it was an Audition Song on Popstars The Rivals 2002 where a Boy Band Girl Group were being formed. The Boy Band One True Voice tanked but Girls Aloud became Superstars.
Do you have The Clip of them Singing I Sold My Heart To The Junkman from Where Action Is. I know it's past the fact but I would have loved Girls Aloud a UK Girl Group to have performed on a Show like this. They were together from 2002-2012 who were discovered on Popstars: The Rivals.
Sos
maybe they would have done better if they had some better stage wear. the Supremes were killing them when it came to that! but Patti did have the vocals!

Could someone please tell me why some kids look so happy and some look so glum.
laminage , dopamine challenged weirdos. Or they don't like the music..Patti's screaming and hollering doesn't do it for everyone. Their lack of record sales proves my point
Hmm, you're right. Also after The British Invasion alot of Girl Groups careers went down the hill. Did you ever see the Documentary Girl Groups The Story Of A Sound. Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes said that in her opinon The British Invasion Took The Girl Groups Away They Took The Guy Groups away, they took alot of your Black Artists away. The fact that they couldn't get hit records was frustrating enough, then Cindy Birdsong betrayed them by joining The Supremes behind their backs. When Geri Halliwell left The Spice Girls there was a major uproar in the UK and then I told them what Cindy did and they were shocked.
