Can I make the under painting with acrylics instead? 🤔
Yes, I'd recommend Holbein Acryla Gouache, which is opaque with a matte finish. When it dries it seals and won't dissolve again. amzn.to/2Yg8nuv . You could also use gesso tinted with acrylic or even gouache.
James Gurney thank you!
@@JamesGurney I am 63 years old and just returned to my art. Finances aren't deep... what would be the first and most important watercolor paint, gouache, brushes

I'm always amazed how you turn a scene that I actually would never consider an interesting subject to paint into something so beautiful and interesting!
I second that!
You live and learn! It's seeing the painting before it's done. This one, it's about light and shadow.
Thank you James. I watch your videos on my lunch break with my day job. Because I don't want to disturb anyone in the restaurant I watch it with captions and the sound turned off. If I'm not watching your video I'm drawing one of my fellow human beings also enjoying their lunch. Thank you!
That's funny. Sometimes I upload my videos in the library, and if I forget to switch my sound off, the first thing out of my laptop is "HI, MY NAME IS JAMES GURNEY!"
You consistently take the must mundane-looking scenes and-literally-turn them into art. It takes a genuinely talented eye.
True, he does! This scene however, is anything but mundane... I believe his paintings show that for most scenes he paints. It's not about what's in the scene.. It's the lights, darks and shadows, mixed with colour, that makes these scenes what they are.
What makes this scene so special in a painting, in my opinion, is the quiet and peaceful nature of it.
I really appreciate the effort you put into making these wonderful videos you share with us all. Thank you
I love Smooth, he's so cute. I like when you say just what he's doing while he waits for you, like watching far away squirrels. Hope to see more of him on future videos. Thanks.
I am always amazed at your skill in telling of the miraculous story of light and texture. Your insight and perspective make the commonly overlooked beauty of this rich dynamic world more exciting.
Smoothe is such a good boy. I wish my rowdy lot would settle down while I sketch in the wild!
I think the skeleton is a perfect beginning for someone who appreciates them so much!
Beautiful painting, and I love the camera angle at the end of the video!
Thank you for putting these together so creatively.
Your ability to make such a seemingly random, chaotic, abstract underpainting/base/block-in turn into such a realistic (or maybe "convincing" is a better word) finished painting never ceases to amaze me.
Wow, the color of the painting is just breathtaking... Much better than the original scene, I have to say. Love how you manage to incorporate so many different shades of snow into one painting. I've never tried having an underpainting done prior to the gouache, but will definitely try that out soon. Thank you so much for the kind descriptions!
Looseness always does it for me. Hope you will do much more like these. I aspire to this style first and foremost and love to learn from the master.
I think that this is my favourite painting of yours
Wow when you added in that light coming through the trees it really transformed the sense of space above the frame! Beautiful piece!
Just fascinated by your mastery of guache. It beguiled me in art school, but some of my classmates are world class masters..
When I watch and listened to the overall tonality of your plein air demonstrations, I'm struck how cool it would be to have one of these edited as the calm, beautiful moments the we enjoy at the end of CBS Sunday morning. I now work in the broadcast industry, and can see this as an oasis for the senses.
That's an intriguing idea, and we're having a quite a discussion about your suggestion, starting with checking out some of the CBS segments you're talking about. It's funny, but the act of painting seems so calm and serene when viewed from the outside. But inside my mind while it's happening, it's a crazy storm of doubt and decision-making. One thing is for sure, it's a form of heightened or altered consciousness, and I'm always intrigued with how to convey that in a video.
what an adorable dog!
Another beautiful painting!
You’re amazing James- inspiring
This paint style is simply amazing. Truly a Master.
Such a joy to watch!
That's amazing, it really is!
I love this place.
Spectacular painting!!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing 🎨🌸
thanks for sharing. I just started playing around with gouache and your teaching helps a lot. I have your dvd Gouache in the Wild and can highly recommend that to your other followers. What a good plein air companion dog Smooth is. This is the time when I too like to get out back on our logging roads in the woods with my dogs but we are having a serious problem with coyotes here this year, packs coming down from the hills and onto our pastures with a single one even circling our house and barns so I worry my dogs will give chase and fight. We are upstate in Washington County and in the 40 yrs of being here have never had a problem with the packs being this bold but the deer herds are larger than ever so it makes sense the coyotes would also thrive. I had not planned on taking a rifle with me out back, kinduv defeats the idea of experiencing calm and serenity while painting, but the situation adds a new reality to Gouache in the Wild.
Thanks for explaining about the coyotes. Some of the horseback riders have seen a big coyote-wolf in the region I was painting, and I saw some coyote poop. Smooth seemed a little nervous--he didn't go far away from me like he usually does. I assume a coyote would be shy and avoid trouble, so I wasn't worried, but who know?
James Gurney coyotes who get used to human scent are not shy and they can sneak up and attack prey with surprising stealth. I am wondering if bear spray would work on them. Wolf coyote hybrid would be very unusual, but coyote crossed at some point with a large dog is more likely but any canine with some measure of wild genetics no matter how many generations back cannot be trusted to behave like a domestic dog which is why they are banned in NY unless a person has a permit for exotic animal ownership (and some municipalities still ban them). The coyotes around here are very large and healthy looking from their diet of deer, farm animals, and any other creature they locate, not at all like the scrawny ones that live around cities and the suburbs. Feral pigs are also becoming a dangerous problem but so far they remain in your area and not this far north. That started with a farm release of pigs years ago and they have thrived. they are aggressive and destructive (wonder if bear spray works on them).
Your sense of light is astounding as always. Thanks so much for sharing your process!
James, a big thank you for sharing your artwork with us mortals.
allways great demonstration, Thank you so much !!
Lovely, thank you really enjoyed your demo
Love the looseness. Thanks for the video!
Thank you, James.
Very cool, love all the color variation in the snow, it looks so complex yet simple at the same time. Great tips here too. Thanks 😊
You're the best James! This is fantastic. I look forward to your videos all week.
You do wonders with the brush. Nothing else to say...
Hi Mr. Gurney. Love your new paintings👏
Thanks. You are an inspiration!
Thank you for sharing. Always a blast to follow your pictorial adventures.
That was mind-blowing. Thank you for sharing the process with us.
Fantastic as always!
Well done 👍 yes you certainly captured the illuminated colours in the snow. Great job.
So cool.
Smooth is gorgeous ❤
Very nice bit of nature there and amazing art. Inspiring!
Those shadows.. and the light. The way you capture the light absolutely amazes me. Thank you again for a stellar video!
wonderful . Thank you ! Really enjoyed seeing you paint! I never disturb painters on location .
i love how you always film yourself jumpimg the gaps
Brilliant as ever ☺
best ever from the master
Beautiful as always. You are very talented
superbe James!!
Sir i like your work very much, i admire you sir
You captured that illuminated part perfectly. One can see all colours of the rainbow in there, as if the light was broken by the snow's crystals. Beautiful work!
You are an amazing painter.
Too good
Very lovely helped a lot thanks!
Impressive!
Very nice style. Beautiful.
I love your temperature control in all your paintings. Can you please make a video that addresses your thoughts on temperature, warms, cools, shadows, lighting, etc. The fundamentals. I saw a couple of your videos on dealing with two ways to make a painting but it would be great to nail down your thoughts on how/why you choose to warm up a cold scene, or cool off a warm sunny scene, or how you work with warm and cool colors on the surfaces of objects. I really liked your video "How to paint a Light Effect" in which you took a relatively flat photo and gave it so much life and warmth. I liked also "Colored Pastel on Gouache for Glowing Light Effects" which worked with light on the surface and distance of objects. These are very cool and I would love to see more. Thank you!
great video and painting. thanks for sharing
I think that scene at the where you are walking away would make a great painting too.
Your artworks are inspirational. They invariably capture the spirit of whatever you paint and make the mundane look beautiful. Watching you paint is such a privilege. And thank you for your informative and insightful commentaries that help those aspiring artists who are less talented than yourself.
id love to see you do some bigger paintings James! awesome video!
Sooo goood!
I got to keep practicing
Wow!
This is exactly what I've been looking for as I'm just now getting into/experimenting with Gouache. Your industrial vintage machine at the end of your videos is absolutely wonderful!
Here's how to make one of those endscreen gadgets: czcams.com/video/QDpuHKxKFvQ/video.html
Am totally in love with gouache now.. 🙂🙂 i really wanted to do plein air paintings like u do.. but just not able to do so.but seeing u i feel encouraged to start with it... gouache is a new medium for me. Thank you for the wonderful videos & inspiration..
wow!!
fantastic
Wow, that's amazing patience from Smooth.
He definitely appears to be very intelligent and an ideal companion
@@johnswaim3919 Yes, I've tried to bring dogs on fishing trips sometimes, and it works fine until the point where they are required to sit still. Everything seems to go smoothly with Smooth.
Fantastic as always. Light and texture are putty in your hands. And meh? Becomes wow! Except that lovely walking path was not meh. Sublime peace is what I could see. I think “ I bet James Gurney would make this scene amazing.” when I walk by Rice University’s Shepherd school of music’s new opera building under construction. The crane is bright yellow and looks great against a bright blue sky. In your painting it would, not any of my attempts! I will continue to be groupie and love your videos!
'I'm going to paint this skeletal human corpse in the underbrush here; starting with a nice wash of raw umber and gradually work my way up to the lighter tones. I really like how the sunlight hits the top of the cracked skull and the earthy texture surrounding it.'
Sorry James, just taking the piss a little. I adore your work!
Beautiful :)
WOW.
OMG I knew of the book Color and Light and just found you're the author unexpectedly. It's a brilliant work indeed. We have the translated version in China.
Thank you. I'm so glad there's a Chinese edition.
Oh my god! I didn’t know you wrote the “Color and Light” book! I’ve had it in my wishlist for months now this is wild!
Nice painting. :) It's nice that you include Smooth in the vids. I'd like to see a painting of him.
Randomly, I'd also like to hear you talk about Frazetta sometime. He was my #1 art hero as a youth.
I don’t paint, only draw with pen and ink or color pencils usually, but your videos are very relaxing and useful.
There's much to learn from you.
I'll make a note of that, using the side of the brush helps get more of a dry brush effect. Thanks.
I love your outdoor paintings ! I'm a watercolor artist and love to venture out, can't ever finish the painting on spot tho. Scared or wild animals I'm a pretty small girl tho. Does that kind of stuff get to you when you go in the woods like that ? Or am I a scaredy cat ?!
Check out that reflected light on the tree trunk at 5:12 Love it
Красота!!!
Замечательно!
Just amazing. You are very talented. Keep up the good work. I should try your style.
thank you in arabic شكراً لك
I liked this. I think im gonna pick up some gouache. What brand do you recommend?
Does Smooth have a "Department of Art" badge on his coat?
would you ever use casein for the whole painting?
So we're not gonna mention the random animal skeleton in the first seconds?
Anyway, thanks for showing your progress James, this is great for every art student to see!
Strange things appear after the snow melts. This was a deer skeleton.
We weren't going to, then you went ahead and made it awkward... thanks.
;)
If you live near nature/ trail areas random animal skeletons are kinda common. I see them so often I started to paint them.
I have been told that you could not use gouache straight from the tube. It must be thinned, etc. I am so happy to see that was wrong. I love your videos. Thanks.
Always good to test the rules we've been taught. Often they make sense, but not always.
Como lo consigues en un medio tan pequeño eres la ostia
I've just returned to pencil drawing and would like to become more knowledgeable in watercolors. What would be the the first and most important things to buy... watercolor paints, gouache, ect
How do you do it???...the shadows!...the light!... the colors...really hold the feel you wanted to convey...is this one part of a longer class???
What is the name/brand of the travel brushes that you were using in this video? Where can I get them?
Hi James, started reading your book colour and light....it's such rich with knowledge....I'm enjoying every page...I want to ask....why gouache....why don't you use acrylics or watercolour?
I like acrylic, oil, and watercolor, too, but for this one I wanted to be able to overlaps light over dark and dark over light.
James Gurney Hey James, I just got Your book “The Artist’s Guide to Sketching: A Handbook for drawing on-the-spot” & it’s so wonderful to see those photos of You & Thomas traveling the country & essentially teaching similar concepts to what Your doing here. Just wanted to Thank You for putting that book out & continuing to share Your talent & insights with us, this many years later. I love it & hope to learn much from it. Take care.
What is the reason for the underpainting?
WOW! Roughly how long were you painting at that location for? You captured that scene so well! I aspire to be able to paint that well one day. Working on it. Thanks for the excellent vid and the inspiration James :D
I was there about an hour and a half if I recall correctly.
How long does ist take you to draw a picture like that?
Hey James, I want to start painting gouache en plein air. However, I’ve been having some trouble with the colors. I have experience oil painting, but all these gouache colors confuses me. There’s like 3 different types of reds such as “Spectrum Red, Primary Red, and Designer Red”, yet they all look like the same hue. Perhaps they have varying opacities? Could you discuss this topic someday?
I plan on just buying Red, Blue, and Yellow with White and Black, and a few Earth Tones. I also plan on building the painting setup you discussed on your blog.
Hi, Preston, I would suggest avoiding gouache colors with descriptive names like "spectrum red," and instead stick with ones with well-known pigments, such as cadmium red. Sometimes an expensive pigment, such as cerulean blue, is replaced with cheaper pigments that match the hue, but they often don't have the opacity. But you don't need to start with the most expensive pigments. With ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, and terra rosa, you can paint most things in nature.
