Here’s how this 270,000 mile RAM 2500 Cummins did towing a 12,000lb 5th wheel back from Canada 🤙🏼

  • Definitely a big adventure for this 270,000 mile 2011 RAM 2500 Cummins. Its a work truck (literally a work truck, but a Laramie trim). Grab a bowl of popcorn for this one, from amazing views of 5 national parks, to getting denied re-entry at the border, double tire trailer blowout, multiple MPG tests and more.

    You are lucky to be alive dude! Not because of the age of the truck but of the tires on the trailer, your steer tires and trailer brakes.

    Thanks for taking us along for a beautiful journey. As fellow Utah'n and a long time 5th wheel owner towing 1000's of miles, I would not have even attempted to tow that 5th wheel without 14 ply tires on trailer, good tires on truck, full brake inspection and bearings checked or repacked. Titanium's 5th wheels were made in Canada and considered to be one of the best trailers out their 20 years ago - until Glendale RV Manufacturing went bankrupt. They patented the cap over design that allowed for a shorter overall tow length. I noticed some side wall fiberglass delamination on the drivers side of trailer which is a possible indication of water penetration (inspect the roof membrane for leaks as soon as possible). Even a small roof leak can total destroy an RV / trailer. The old truck did great, but safety must always come first; invest in the best possible tires on all wheels, especially when towing. Thanks again for sharing this adventure.

    • @gavinwalker5686
      @gavinwalker5686  Před 2 lety

      @GC Slade we definitely won’t be buying anything from a Canadian auction again, really probably anything sight unseen or that’s been sitting a while like that. The trailer is in rougher shape than we realized, especially tire and brake wise. It was very inexpensive for a Titanium so we went for it. Thanks for the pro tip on the delaminating. Definitely some work to do on this thing. And next time; I guess a repair further in advance would be good to verify the repair worked, since the truck still chewed through a tire as you saw. I definitely have lots to learn, first time towing or using a 5th, but overall I really enjoyed the trip, hiccups and all. Thanks for following along and for the advice 🙏 keep it coming.

    I’ve spent some time in Montana over the last 5 years and have been to that border crossing north of Eureka. It’s a unbelievable beautiful but very very expensive area if someone wanted to live up there. It’s great in the summer and fall but winters can be brutal and the spring is very wet. Thanks for the video.

      @David Brown thanks for the comment. That’s cool you’ve gotten to spend so much time up there. I was surprised to hear it’s costly since it’s so far from everything, but couldn’t help but look up some real estate in the area. Crazy, but makes sense as I think about the uniqueness of that area. I’m sure all the goods cost more too because they have to get trucked in from far.

      @@gavinwalker5686 most people on that area are buying home and renting them to people for the summer months at a very high rate. If you have a nice house, you could rent it for 4k a week since everyone wants to visit Glacier National Park. Banff is definitely a bucket list items for us but it might be a couple of years away. Sorry you had trouble with the 5th on the way back but RV tires have a shelf life of about 5 years. After that, you are really tempting fate if you know what I mean. Hopefully you can get your truck back soon and enjoy more time in the woods.

    For future reference, don’t switch between power levels on the truck. The 68rfe transmissions are self learning and take a few hundred miles to “learn” the tune. Also , locking out 6th gear will save a 68rfe transmission.

    LOL nothing like dropping major coin on a new oil burner only to get punked by Dodge when the time comes to impress the FIL. It was pretty classic that your FIL sends you on this ridiculous journey to pick up a clapped out camper and he could only spring for 2 new truck tires. Towing 12k with front end problems and a completely bald tire with belts showing? Nevermind you had 4 of his grandkids in the truck. Good times for sure!

    Stumbled across this video with the algorithm. Saw the title and thought hmmm.... I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.9 Cummins 6 spd manual, shortbed crew cab with upgraded turbo, Edge chip, air filter, exhaust brakes, muffler and many others including AirLift airbags. My payload capacity is around 2,900 lbs. I tow a 2019 Outdoors RV travel trailer dry at 8,600lbs with a gvwr of 11,000lbs, with a tongue weight ranging from 1,200 to1,400 lbs. I weigh 260, my puppers combined about 160 and my DiamondBack bed cover leaving me (after tongue weight) of about 700lbs of payload for guns, atv (on top of my bed cover), tools, etc. I knew nothing about this until I bought my trailer. After a bit of education because I didn't want to hurt my furkids or anybody else on the road, I actually know quite a bit about it now and am stunned by people who refuse to look at anything about this while towing their beautiful family and furkids around... 30 seconds of research says that 12,000lb 5th wheel, COMPLETELY DRY, has a pin weight of 2,400lbs (20% x 12k) all part of your truck's payload. That 2011 shortbed crew cab diesel has an approximate payload capacity of 2,050 to 2,160lbs of MAX PAYLOAD (www.rambodybuilder.com/2011/docs/ram/rammlup2500.pdf). So, if your truck was completely and utterly empty, no humans, furkids, a bottle of water, etc, you'd be at least 240lbs over your payload towing that completely empty 5th wheel. Add your family, you, your pupper, the weight of the hitch in the bed of the truck, any supplies tucked inside the bed or inside the truck, you're at least 1,000lbs over that truck's payload. Not only are you endangering your family's lives, you're endangering everybody else on the road. I have airbags, they absolutely do nothing to increase the payload capacity of your truck, only to help level it out which it should be with your sway reducing hitch anyways without airbags if set up correctly. Google videos, stories on over payload while towing rv tragedies. It's all about what that truck's axles can handle and that's why payload is so important. The only thing that can increase payload is adding leaf springs. I promise you'll never do it again if you read this and research this a bit. Your family is beautiful. Sooooo many people out there doing the same sh@t through pure ignorance. On a lighter note, thank you for visiting and loving my state :^) I live in Trout Creek, MT. I marvel at the beauty here every day I wake up!!

    • @gavinwalker5686
      @gavinwalker5686  Před 2 lety +1

      @Mark Cole guilty as charged. I’ll research more about it for sure. I think we didn’t think much of it out of ignorance, and just that that trucks whole life it’s been bumper towing heavy construction trailers full of tools and such, huge dump loads, just like that, also probably over payload if we were to do the math, with no misfortune, so we just threw it on and went for it. I’m thankful for your knowledge and appreciate your comment, it towed it very well I wouldn’t have thought twice about towing it anywhere. Adding a leaf spring wouldn’t be hard, and definitely something we’ll do. 🙏
