Secret LG C1 "Hack" to Unlock G1 OLED Evo Brightness - Should You Do It?

- We discuss LG's official response to the now-public discovery that C1 OLED TVs with the latest panel from Guangzhou can be unlocked to deliver similar HDR peak brightness to the more expensive LG G1 with OLED Evo technology, simply by changing an adjustable field in the service menu.
Because we think the negatives outweigh the gains, we are not going to link to any sources that describe this service menu "hack".

Fantastic computer overclocking metaphor regarding extra cooling to GPUs and CPUs. I was also one of the users who overclocked the grail of overclocking chips which was the Pentium II 300mhz to 450 mhz back in the 90s. This permitted users to purchase a $150 Celeron to perform 95% of a $1000 PIII 450 mhz processor. It was an easy hack that needed a tiny piece of tape, which provided a 50% improvement, with no special cooler necessary since very few were present compared to today's cooling solutions.
Ah yes, the famous Celeron 300A.
There was also a specific version of the earlier Pentium MMX that would overclock from 166 MHz to 293 MHz with the right mainboard and and a beefy cooler.
And going back even further, the Intel 486/SX with 25 MHz could be overclocked to a whopping 66 MHz -- more than 2.5-fold.
Those were the days.

Well said, just one observation, the G1 has max size of 77inch. In an interview with a senior LG individual, it has been alluded to that the 83 inch G1 is incoming (not sure if this is true). So my point is if someone has a desire to have the 83 inch screen size the only option is the C1 currently, therefore they might push and change the settings.

I have a C1 65, although I'm not sure whether it was made in Guangzhou. However, I don't think it's worth missing out on updates, or potentially damaging your TV just for 10% extra peak brightness which is negligible. In my opinion, the C1 is plenty bright especially at nighttime, but not so bright like the QLED that it burns your eyes. The only downside is that it needs calibrating because the colours are not great out of box. Besides that, it's perfectly fine. Wonderful in fact.
I have turn my C1 DOWN to 36% brightness. You must be watching outside to need 100%. You set is just going to get burn-in even quicker anyway.
@@toriless they won't mean for sdr they'll mean for HDR. HDR should always be 100% brightness
OK some one in Australia needs to test that "void your warranty" claim against the ACL and ACCC.
You are quite a comedian. "Speaking from personal experience, premature failure spoils all the fun." Love it! You should consider doing standup comedy.
I just got a LG OLED B2 77", and it has the WBE panel, the "evo" panel. Very happy :)
Since GPUs were mentioned, I'll add that in the past you could flash the VBIOS from a higher tier AMD card to a lower one and it would work without any issues and unlock additional performance because those lower tier products were just crippled higher tier chips with power delivery and cooling being close to equal. This of course does not seem to be the case here
you still can; and some cards come with two bios, same with Mobo's, and some, like asus, straight up refuse to respect the power standard of your cpu. the reason C/GPU's are binned, is so you have a guaranteed performance, if you got a C/GPU off a really lucky waffer, you can even undervolt it, and overlock it for more speed at a lower temp; some will spit out errors, some will run fine. the real issue you run into now is that the power phases are lack luster and tend to cause AOE damage when they blow. but for example i can run my massive CPU at 4.6ghz all core; which is well above the 3.4Ghz all core and it hovers at 60C; if i let the mobo/cpu handle max core in auto, i get 80C temp spikes and not that much faster performance while running at full voltage. some cakes just come out better from the oven, it's life.
@@ClannerJake you can't anymore. They now physically disable the cores if they use a higher end chip in a lower end gpu. It wasn't just AMD either, it was amd & nVidia.
@@ClannerJake that's completely different then what OP is talking about lol

Most gamers are switching to the 48" C1.
Very nice channel with great sense !
I would wonder if it may even be different 'binning' by LG to determine which panels from the G1 manufacturing line may not be 100% ok on test but can be suitable for C1 model.
Good points! I still ordered the service remote to play around with these settings anyway.
Just be careful. One wrong setting may brick your TV.

Excellent counter points to all the AVS hype. Thanks for offering an alternative view, pun intended, on this topic.
My whole thing is why the hell are people so worried about measurements when in actual content you won't see the difference. It's legit still going to operate the same it makes no sense. If anything you could create the tv to overshoot or hard clip things that tech savy isn't bringing up. He spread this hack way to early without figuring out what could or couldn't happen. I get it was on the forums first but his video spread and made others talk about it more. The guy is newer he does know alot amd learned fast but he's just learned it, not been here for years. So there are many things he isn't thinking about. He's just going by what's said not how it actually operates. It's a bit ridiculous, peope should stop this measurement hype they are all similar. The Sony a90j is different because they pushed it hard and put a heatsink in there. So yeah that will have more brightness but all these lg tvs track the same they have dynamic tone mapping and same everything pretty much. Regardless in content they will be similar. People need to relax on measurements, content is what matters.

I did it and I couldn't visually tell a difference. The sound from the tv speakers went to hell though. Almost robotic sounding. When I switch back to C1 it sounds clear and robust. If I play sound through a sound bar or my apple homepods, headphones etc, the sound is perfect. So definitely turning the C1 to a G1 jacks the internal speakers up. At least it did for me.

Hi Vince,
I have a problem with my new LG C1: when I'm gaming on PC and there is a big explosion on screen (i.e. in Doom Eternal), sometimes the TV shuts itself off and reboots. It's like if the ABL doesn't know how to handle the situation and just shuts off the TV. If you search online you can find a lot of people that have the same issue, even with prior generations of LG OLEDs.
Your opinion on this matter would be greatly appreciated
Would love to see Vince investigate this. It'd also just be really useful info, because I'd been considering buying this display.
I had the problem with a cheap 2.1 cable. Not all cables are the same, and even « certified » ones sometimes have problems. I changed my cheap cable to a 3x as expensive Belkin 2.1 8K cable and now I don’t have any trouble.

I might be totally wrong on this. But I thought the CX's 40 Gbps bandwidth isn't enough for DV 120 fps since DV is 12 bit.
btw, any idea if c1/g1 boost option for prevent input delay introduces any other issues or gamma shifts ?
Excellent! Well thought, and logical.
Although the Sony TVs are completely different, this is somewhat similar to the Sony X900H situation where owners of the X900H were updating the firmware from the X90J to boost their X900H.
I have a x900h, how can I do this??
@@bobbobson4030 the firmware from the X90J that was released about a month ago increased peak brightness, also on HDR for the X900H. Also, it supposedly fixed the 4K120Hz blurring.
Sadly, the mirror for firmware is not available anymore. You’ll have to Google it, someone might have it or post it on a website. It was up on official Sony support site for X90J page and the r/Bravia Reddit page. It was taken down when people started doing it.
@@UserInterface00 Any chance it would damage the hardware? Have they changed it in the new TV?

This is a great explanation of the small benefit vs the large consequences. I'm a C9 owner so this doesn't affect me in any way, but I would just sit and enjoy my new C1 if it were me.... after disabling ASBL of course.
Doesn’t disabling ASBL also affect your warranty?
@@robertt9342 from what I heard it does
@@robertt9342 Probably. In the case of ASBL, it is not a "small benefit" to me... it is the difference between a TV that is simply unwatchable or watchable. I'm willing to accept the risk.
@@ThunderStruckMTB True.
There is a new update coming soon that fixes HDR issues anyway. Not worth messing with expensive tv's unless you have money to burn.
Very clear explanation. Great Job! but ... my tv is a VIZIO does any of these instructions apply to this brand?
For someone who used the warranty on their c6 years later, I wouldn't want to lose my warranty. Rocking a CX now as it was not repairable. :)
That's interesting to hear.
Where did you get your C6?
I got mine in Currys and put in for repair over 2 weeks ago due to screen burn and a stuck pixel. Been thinking they won't be able to repair it due to the curved screen, and getting excited that they might replace it with a CX or a C1!
Ironically you did a better job explaining why it’s a bad idea to tell a C1 it’s a G1 than LG themselves.
Ok so you can tell by Vincent’s phrasing that he’s being careful not to step on LG’s toes. Yes, the G1 and C1 use the same panel precisely because running two lines would be more costly. The G1/C1 difference is mostly for price discrimination: Charging higher prices to customers that are willing to pay it. Given how the G1 mounts and the shape of the frame, the C1 should have better thermals. There’s a chance that LG selects better panels off the line for the G1 series. But that would probably be expensive as well. So the natural conclusion is that the panels are identical, and there is no harm in hacking the C1.
@James L: That's your own opinion, most of which are conjecture and not proven. We are relaying LG's official statement, and can conclusively prove that switching the service menu code from C1 to G1 alters other operational characteristics of the TV besides merely HDR peak brightness.
@@hdtvtest it’s absolutely the case that performance could suffer because the G1 and C1 are tuned differently based on other characteristic. And clearly LG is within their rights to void the warranty if someone does this. But the risks of damaging the display are likely minimal.
@@hdtvtest sarcasm much? Lol
This guys is my new dry humour favourite!
Well done mate 👍
Just buy a G1 if u want evo, why risking breaking your(C1) tv for this, if is not broken don’t fix 😎
Unless you know you're going to wall mount it, you'll be stuck with either the ridiculous "gallery" stand, or those ugly AF Sony styled legs. But I do agree on not messing around with the service menu of a C1 in an attempt to make it a G1, because it still won't be and it's going to get hotter. After having a B6 that prematurely died *two months* after the warranty expired, and getting kind of a lemon C8, I wouldn't trust the manufacturing quality of a C1 to not quickly die doing something like this.
It fixed the HDR luminance calibration for me, but colors were less accurate oob.
But the word is the sweeping stand trim makes the C1 actually sound better than G1. So my choice is to compromise on the sound or the picture?
@@Neonmirrorblack the CX is my first Oled, how do I know if it’s a lemon? 🍋
@@alexanderulv3886 If it has any noticeable screen defects under normal viewing conditions for a start.
My C8 has some of the worst screen uniformity I've ever seen, and during any scene that is between the 10% and 20% black range, I see a huge pillar that's darker than everything else. It goes up three-quarters of the screen and is about four inches wide. It destroys the image, and there's nothing that can be done about it.
Who are these people that say these Oleds are not bright enough. I have a GX, i don't use the peak brightness and with HDR it hurts my eyes after some watching cause it's so bright. people who claim "this is so dark I can't see", maybe check with your eye doctor just to be sure.
