Secret LG C1 "Hack" to Unlock G1 OLED Evo Brightness - Should You Do It?

  • We discuss LG's official response to the now-public discovery that C1 OLED TVs with the latest panel from Guangzhou can be unlocked to deliver similar HDR peak brightness to the more expensive LG G1 with OLED Evo technology, simply by changing an adjustable field in the service menu.
    Because we think the negatives outweigh the gains, we are not going to link to any sources that describe this service menu "hack".

    Fantastic computer overclocking metaphor regarding extra cooling to GPUs and CPUs. I was also one of the users who overclocked the grail of overclocking chips which was the Pentium II 300mhz to 450 mhz back in the 90s. This permitted users to purchase a $150 Celeron to perform 95% of a $1000 PIII 450 mhz processor. It was an easy hack that needed a tiny piece of tape, which provided a 50% improvement, with no special cooler necessary since very few were present compared to today's cooling solutions.

    • @frehmingmanuel
      @frehmingmanuel Před 2 lety +2

      Ah yes, the famous Celeron 300A.
      There was also a specific version of the earlier Pentium MMX that would overclock from 166 MHz to 293 MHz with the right mainboard and and a beefy cooler.
      And going back even further, the Intel 486/SX with 25 MHz could be overclocked to a whopping 66 MHz -- more than 2.5-fold.
      Those were the days.

So my point is if someone has a desire to have the 83 inch screen size the only option is the C1 currently, therefore they might push and change the settings.

    I have a C1 65, although I'm not sure whether it was made in Guangzhou. However, I don't think it's worth missing out on updates, or potentially damaging your TV just for 10% extra peak brightness which is negligible. In my opinion, the C1 is plenty bright especially at nighttime, but not so bright like the QLED that it burns your eyes. The only downside is that it needs calibrating because the colours are not great out of box. Besides that, it's perfectly fine. Wonderful in fact.

    Since GPUs were mentioned, I'll add that in the past you could flash the VBIOS from a higher tier AMD card to a lower one and it would work without any issues and unlock additional performance because those lower tier products were just crippled higher tier chips with power delivery and cooling being close to equal. This of course does not seem to be the case here

    • @ClannerJake
      @ClannerJake Před 2 lety

      you still can; and some cards come with two bios, same with Mobo's, and some, like asus, straight up refuse to respect the power standard of your cpu. the reason C/GPU's are binned, is so you have a guaranteed performance, if you got a C/GPU off a really lucky waffer, you can even undervolt it, and overlock it for more speed at a lower temp; some will spit out errors, some will run fine. the real issue you run into now is that the power phases are lack luster and tend to cause AOE damage when they blow. but for example i can run my massive CPU at 4.6ghz all core; which is well above the 3.4Ghz all core and it hovers at 60C; if i let the mobo/cpu handle max core in auto, i get 80C temp spikes and not that much faster performance while running at full voltage. some cakes just come out better from the oven, it's life.

      My whole thing is why the hell are people so worried about measurements when in actual content you won't see the difference. It's legit still going to operate the same it makes no sense. If anything you could create the tv to overshoot or hard clip things that tech savy isn't bringing up. He spread this hack way to early without figuring out what could or couldn't happen. I get it was on the forums first but his video spread and made others talk about it more. The guy is newer he does know alot amd learned fast but he's just learned it, not been here for years. So there are many things he isn't thinking about. He's just going by what's said not how it actually operates. It's a bit ridiculous, peope should stop this measurement hype they are all similar. The Sony a90j is different because they pushed it hard and put a heatsink in there. So yeah that will have more brightness but all these lg tvs track the same they have dynamic tone mapping and same everything pretty much. Regardless in content they will be similar. People need to relax on measurements, content is what matters.

      @@hdtvtest Greetings. I was wondering if you could help me at all. I purchased a LG C1 65" a few weeks back. Although I enjoy many aspects of my new OLED panel I do find it dull and dark in comparison to my old Samsung LED display. I have flicked through the options such as Game -Optimizer, Theatre, Cricket, Cinema, Standard and Vivid mode etc finding Vivid to be the brightest of these options. When Game Optimizer mode is on it still seems dull and you have to choose either Vivid or GOM. So my question is how would I calibrate my screen to appear brighter? Perhaps there is a good CZcamsr whom has done such adjustment through the settings menu? Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance. Rod from New Zealand :)

    I have a problem with my new LG C1: when I'm gaming on PC and there is a big explosion on screen (i.e. in Doom Eternal), sometimes the TV shuts itself off and reboots. • @jamesr3505
    @jamesr3505 Před 3 lety +5

    Ok so you can tell by Vincent’s phrasing that he’s being careful not to step on LG’s toes. Yes, the G1 and C1 use the same panel precisely because running two lines would be more costly. The G1/C1 difference is mostly for price discrimination: Charging higher prices to customers that are willing to pay it. Given how the G1 mounts and the shape of the frame, the C1 should have better thermals. There’s a chance that LG selects better panels off the line for the G1 series. But that would probably be expensive as well. So the natural conclusion is that the panels are identical, and there is no harm in hacking the C1.

    • @hdtvtest
      @hdtvtest  Před 3 lety +6

      @James L: That's your own opinion, most of which are conjecture and not proven. We are relaying LG's official statement, and can conclusively prove that switching the service menu code from C1 to G1 alters other operational characteristics of the TV besides merely HDR peak brightness.

    • @jamesr3505
      @jamesr3505 Před 3 lety +3

      @@hdtvtest it’s absolutely the case that performance could suffer because the G1 and C1 are tuned differently based on other characteristic. And clearly LG is within their rights to void the warranty if someone does this. But the risks of damaging the display are likely minimal.
