This Trail was Destroyed by the Fire. Now it's BACK!

- Northern California has been impacted by wildfires year after year. This year has been no different with the Dixie Fire and the Caldor Fire. A few weeks ago the Bridge Fire started in Auburn and destroyed a local trail called Culvert. Thanks to the work of the California State Parks and Recreation and Fatrac (a local trail organization) the train is back up and running in record time.
With this video I simply wanted to get eyes on the damage for the first time and show how the trail looks after the fire. If you'd like to get involved in helping rebuild after events like this be sure to look up your local trail organization for ways to help.
Here are a few trail orgs in my area:

Thanks for the scouting report
Glad I could get eyes on it and share how it's looking out there.
Culvert always had some drainage issues on the top half, it looks like they bulldozed one of those parts. Great time to finally get culvert's drainage issues solved this winter.
Yea I spoke with Ryan and he's hoping to do some major work to the train this winter. So hoping those plans come together. Told him I'd be there to help if needed.
2:49 Tenaciously travelling the terrifying tunnel trail with temerity is a terrific testament toward teaching the tribes to try to take it trustingly.
I must have written that while having Tea
This comment was so good that I sat down trying to come up with an equally well written response. All I could come up with is “you quelled the qualifying question in my mind with a quagmire.” 🤷♂️
As a farmer and conservationist I really appreciate the work of trail building and shared community use of land.👊
Yea. It’s great to have a place people can come enjoy the land. Helps people see the bigger picture. There’s so much out there to see and do!
Man that trail looked so flowy!!! Even with the phoscheck and the burn marks that place still looks amazing!!! Great video as always
It's a good trail system. Definitely our home trails. Looking forward to getting some more work done on it.
Thanks for putting this up. Good to know that Strava line is blocked off. I definitely would have blown through there too. I’m assuming whatever is in the way won’t last long. 😂
Yea. I'm willing to bet that line is already clear. 😂
Glad to see Culvert is alive! Can't wait to give it a spin in the coming weeks. Thanks for this update! AND THANK YOU Ryan and the FATRAC team!
Yea man! They've been hustling behind the scenes to get things moving and it's so rad to see Culvert up and running so fast.
Thanks for showing these trails Joe. It amazes me that something like these trails can be devastated, but given time and a lot of hard work, something even better can emerge. Good luck and I hope y’all get rain.
Definitely. Looking forward to fine tuning this bad boy once we get some more rain!
Awesome work by FATRAC to get it back open so quickly. Looking forward to helping with the rebuilding.
Absolutely! Feel like we’re ready for a Fatrac build day sequel video!
Glad it's back. Thankful for the efforts of others.
100%. So much work goes in to maintaining trail systems.
From the ashes become beautiful. Fantastic job getting the trail running!
Can’t wait to get the first couple days of rain so we can start seeing the green out there again!
Rode it this morning. Crashed about 50 yards from Old Foresthill Rd. There are some really nasty spots right where you least expect them.
Lots of rocks have rolled down on the trail and continue to do so. Definitely stay alert.
Yea there's definitely more work to be done out there for sure. Will be great when we get some rain and can REALLY fine tune Culvert.
Another great vid. Even your more "simple" vids are great. I think it's the voice. 😉👍
Thanks DUKE! The voice and the mustache keeps em coming back for more! 😂
@@CaliradoKid lol, that might be it.
This video is great thanks for making it
Sad to see what happened out there. I'm glad I could get everyone a trail report. Here's to hoping some rain rolls through REAL soon.
Looking morbid! Hopefully by spring time we see it a whole different way for the better 🤘 the trail honestly looks better than I imagined
Yes! I’m looking forward to some rain and some fine tuning. She’ll be back better than ever.
We were finally getting some nice weather for some after work rides, then boom It's on fire! Glad to see it's back open.
Yea. With some rain we're gonna be in good shape! It's gonna be nice to see everything regrow out there.
Sight of the damage is sad but appreciate the post!
And I know there’s good hands out there that are going to dress her back up real nice!
Yes! They've got a small army ready to help rebuild. Gotta love the MTB community.
That’s insane. I’ve never been obviously, but I barely recognized it from other videos.
It's such a drastic change. It was hard to concentrate on riding when I was looking around and just taking it all in.
@@CaliradoKid 😢
Drove down from Redding last week to ride Auburn for my first time ever. That place is so much fun. Culvert trail reminds me of how the Swasey area is up here in Redding. Eerie looking forest that was burned. If you ever come up here hit me up and I’ll recommend you some good routes.
Glad you made it down to check it out! I heard there's some really fun stuff up near Redding.
Damn. My fav local trail decimated. FAT RAC should consider building a new line in the foliage higher. The best part of Culvert was the gnar in the trees. I'm glad you made vids before the fires.
Yea they’d definitely love to do more work out there. A lot of it just depends on the state and getting clearance to build more. Lots of red tape.
Was super bummed to see this, then really sad to learn it was arson (prolly some Sierra Club Enforcer) but amazed to see it back and rideable! Great lil vid thanks for this, one of my fav trails in NorCal
Yea really sad seeing the damage. Even worse when you know it was arson. But we'll get er' up and running good as new once the rain comes in!
Wow...glad it wasn't completely destroyed
Yea. The trail itself held up pretty well. She’ll be running great again in no time.
Awesome video, I have an idea. Since you are getting famous around here. You should start doing little fund raising functions at the local breweries from Tahoe down to Auburn. Raising money for FATRAC to rebuild the trails that the two big fires (Caldor and Dixie) destroyed . You could call it "Fund raising Fire Trail, from Tahoe to Auburn " I was just thinking a way to help out with all the trails that have affected by the fires. Anyway... keep the videos going... they are Awesome. See ya. Take care!
Thanks Patrick! Honestly I like the idea of doing fundraising live streams at breweries but my influence is still VERY small. I don't think if I put the word out many people would show up. In general I make sure to promote MTB Norcal fundraising events and I also try to highlight any updated from trail orgs on my instagram. The silent auction MTB Norcal put together last week generated over $14,000 for the local orgs. So cool!
We rode the Loop couple days ago, pretty significant dozer damage between Grizzly House and Brushy Mountain Fuel Break entrance. Past that, A-OK. Support FATRAC, let's get ASRA rocking again...cheers.
Definitely not as bad as expected. Which is super nice!
really illustrates the insane amount of work this all takes. and here and there eery flashes of everything ablaze. oof. bonus: you got the re-establish the shortcut line and claim it as an accident. well played.
Yea man. It's crazy seeing the dozer lines cut across the trail. And yes...someone's going to move those sticks and twigs REAL fast. 😂
Always crazy to see burn areas, really sad how long it takes for stuff to grow back also
It’s definitely gonna take some time. We just need some damned RAIN!
Great video! Come ride here in Thousand Oaks. I will host you.
Thanks man! One of these days I’ll get out there!
Great video but why didn’t you use the Skydio?
I didn't have a LOT of time this morning to shoot my normal style of video. I had the drone with me but decided to just capture the trail and my reactions. This is definitely the fastest edit I've ever done. More like a RAW style.
Lots of loose dirt to build some sweet jumps once it finally rains.
Absolutely!
Gnary!
It's a totally different landscape. So surreal riding it.
I knew you lived in NorCal, but you live in Auburn? I got a buddy that owns a automotive shop there.
I’m still about 40 mins from auburn but it’s a regular stomping ground. Auburn, granite bay and salmon falls area are all closest to me.
Destroyed may be an overstatement.
That’s spooky…
Yea. It was very strange being back on that trail and seeing it like that. Did you guys have any trails burn up with the big fires a couple years back?
@@CaliradoKid no idea if we lost any 😬🤦🏽
Cray Cray, same thing at oathill Calistoga. Feels like mars 😐
Yea! Napa got hit hard for several years. So crazy. This is the first time for me riding a trail I know really well with such massive damage. Very surreal.
Wow! Totally different looking! Crazy! Its a shame that we lost some cool jumps! F'n arsonists!!!! Thanks Fatrac for getting it back up and running!
Yea it's like riding in a totally different world. It was hard to ride fast because I was just kinda soaking it all in. But I was talking with Ryan and he'd like to do some major work to the trail once we get some rain. So I have a feeling it'll come back better than ever.
Hopefully the poison oak doesn’t grow back …. You took the strava line 🤣
Ugh. Why do I have a feeling the Poison Oak will come back even WORSE now that all the other vegetation is gone. 😥
@@CaliradoKid time will tell
Green? Hahah only for a couple months out of the year, silly rabbits. Looks like dirt doesn't burn all that much? It will be 100% back after some rain.
Haha! You make a good point! After rewatching it I was thinking the same thing. I MEANT brown. 😂
