Same!!! I water almost daily in my raised beds and pots. I may not need to so much in my raised beds..... they are mostly peppers this year 😅
Your arid must be different than mine. I can't go three or four days without watering most of those plants without them shriveling. I lost almost all my peppers (potted, so there's that) because I forgot them for a week. My basil isn't dead but whatever survived after 5 days without me watering them is stunted for weeks already. And I live in The Netherlands with a North facing garden behind a 4 story building. 😬
Even my chamomile is dying now I stopped watering it every other day, but I think it's because it went to seed and I was planting it mostly for decoration and didn't harvest.
Last year here in MA, we had a severe drought by August after pretty much no rain locally here for the better part of two months. Pretty much every little stream was dry and the reservoir was getting really low. We lost quite a few plants, with the exception of a couple of butternut squashes, a zucchini, and ALL of our tomatoes! Oh yeah, the weeds were also fine!
Luke I just started my garden for this summer time like you had done last year !!! It is going great so am praying for the best garden this year got a lot of the things in the garden that you spoke of !!!
I am glad he has had two videos on watering. I probably overwater and am trying to back off a bit this year.
In North Alabama Okra and Sweet Potatoes are two plants that can deal with our hot dry summers.

Here in the Central Valley, CA I can’t kill most perennial herbs if I try! Rosemary is an invincible shrub, sage can handle months with zero water, thyme spreads all over the place given any amount of sun.
And I totally agree with your point about tomatoes being drought resistant. I’ve found that they absolutely prefer to be on the dry side compared to other fruiting crops.
Ive never been able to keep rosemary or lavender alive. I water it like I would other herbs and they just dieeeee

It just poured down torrents of rain here and I am so glad. No dragging my 300 ft hose around for an hour today!!.... Hopefully not for a couple days😅 It has rained maybe twice in the past 2 months here in Central IL.. The grass is so yellow and crunchy!!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been getting the "Edema" on my tomato seedlings leaves every year when I seed start, & they would also drop their leaves, & I could never figure out what is was!!! The first year I thought it was a disease so I kept reseed-starting them..
Here in Tucson AZ peppers doing well, sage, basil and even strawberries with shade cover over the berries.

Probably not
Should be fine, less prefect sunlight though.
I use a hose in the early morning before sun up and wash them off. So far, I haven’t had mold issues or rot
Use a fiber over them! This way the stuff falls on the fiber, can be removed and gently hand washed in evening every couple of days, just to ensure it doesn't. Least, that's my plan. I've got a small plan cause I knew this was coming. It's going to get worse B4 it gets better. I'm praying for all of us! Americans, listening to mainstream and calling your conspiracy theorists friends or family names is ignorance. Listen to them. Stop listening to mainstream. Our nation is in trouble!
Yes it does affect plants.
I planted 80 pepper plants this year and it's doing great. They are about 3 ft. tall and loaded with good size fruit.
I grow varieties like Black Cherry, Yellow Pear, Brandywine, Black Krim, San Marzano every season and I don't dry farm but they get water MAYYBE once every week-2 weeks. Never had an issue with blossom end rot or a tomato plant dying , always 6-8ft tomato plants lol

There is drought resistant Versions of cool season vegables like kale there is tree collards and sea kale which are Perenial kales. There is heat resistant spinach called causcasian spinach which grows edible spinach vine there is also New Zealand spinach and Malabar spinach which can be grown as annuals but are Perenial.
Very interesting! I've been having alot of rain in Georgia and it's so humid and hot I can hardly stand to be outside for long. I wonder if that's why my sweet pepper plant is growing tall but no fruit yet. It's been in the ground for 2 or 3 months now and I'm wondering if I will get any fruit from it at all. I also wonder if maybe the rain is washing out the fertilizer. I recently added Biochar and some more worm castings just in case. My Better Boy tomato plant has had lots of foliage growth but only seems to have 4 tomatoes on it at any one time, and the flowers take forever to get fruit behind them. I am hand pollinating when the weather dries out after a rain. I just repotted some peppers I grew from seed indoors under a grow light and then put them outside. Lettuce is still a real struggle. I'm growing two varieties; Cimmaron and Tom Thumb Butterhead. The leaves are so tender they tend to wilt easily. Not sure if it's the humidity that's causing it because even indoors under grow lights they easily get tamped down. I'm trying several different methods and found that the one lettuce I put in a hydroponic container is standing up better than the rest but still not adding many leaves. It may be because it is only bottom-watered and leaves don't touch water, as they are up above clay balls.
That is so interesting to know I did not know that tomato plants or at least some tomato plants can be drought tolerant I will definitely have to check that out next year when I go plant tomato plants
It’s also about teaching the young tomato plants to grow their roots deep down in search of groundwater. A “drought resistant variety” will not do well in a drought if you baby it early on with shallow watering every day. I have noticed in wet springs that tomatoes grow their roots along the surface of the soil and then at the end of the season the roots aren’t that much deeper when I yank the plant out.
I grow in the desert.. I water at least once a day if my soil isn't amended with coco core etc.

well I wish i had known about dry farming 5 months ago...growing rutgers this year but we are in an exceptionsl drought. Wish I had some of those tomatoes you talked about!
I live in Arizona, i sprayed BT on my raspberry plant and it actually burned the younger shoots is there anything i could do to help it out a bit? I removed the damaged foliage and 90 precent of the foliage is still looking healthy, maybe my plant will be fine im just worried i might miss out on raspberries
Plant species native to your areas that have been adapted there for thousand of years there is species native to the desert that are related to raspberries.
I planted my garden with mystery seeds. Found a bunch of seeds threw them in my planting pots and all kinds of stuff are coming up 😅😅😅😅
Interesting...is there an opposing list of plants that love getting soaked? I live in a place with very rainy summers, so I'm curious if there are things I can add to my garden that would really flourish in all the moisture.
Lettuce, Alliums, all Cruciferous vegetables, various berry bushes and fruit trees like apples and pear?

what about really hot climate like texas? now, i found the kale and chard lasted a long time without water. but things like tomatoes and squash get really unhappy after our hot days. it is really hard to figure out the whole water situation 😔

Is it possible to root tarragon from the cuttings you buy from the grocery? I have tried several times but it hasn't worked yet.
Hot peppers also like it dry very very dry. They are spicier and hotter when they are not watered very much.

Hi there, what brand of plastic cover would you recommend for mulching in Dry farming, like the Mexicans.
Sweet potatoes are fairly drought tolerant as well.
I’ve found at the community garden that if you practice dry farming,
other gardeners ask if I need help watering my garden. Some have literally taken it upon themselves to “help” me by watering my garden when I’m not there.
Are bell peppers less drought resistant than they type of peppers you show? I mostly grow bell peppers. And, is that a stag-horn sumac tree behind your tarragon? That's a fantastic herb if it is.
What do you guys do in 4th of july?
I wonder if this applies to the desert 🌵 southwest?
New Mexico here. I’m watering daily right now, as it’s very hot and very dry. Later in the summer when the sun is less intense and humidity is higher I will water a little less, but still every two-three days. I find fruiting more consistent with watering, plus I can grow more in less space.
@@doubles1545 I am watering everyday as well. Humidity is 11% and temps 103 to 111. I am also shade clothing everything in the afternoon sun. My okra and black eyed peas are doing the best along with my peppers.

Probably not hot peppers are more drought tolerant like chilipetin peppers that grow wild in Texas.

But what if it's REALLY HOT? Like 101/102 every day for weeks? (South Texas) Does this still hold? I feel like everything is wilting if I don't water daily during a heat wave, for almost every plant.
If they are producing fruit in those temps, you’re doing it right. Normally they won’t. I grow some in afternoon shade in Tx, that’s enough sun.

You can have draught resistant veggies but you can not get away from the radiation that is happening to the plants; you are going to need a shade cloth as well.

Thanks Luke, another informative posting. That overcast is Canada Smoke, it's all the way down here in WV. Someone should make em stop, there burning off land on purpose, while we all suffer. Can't be good for the garden.
They're not burning on purpose--Canadians are suffering! Drought and dry lighting kicked theirs off months ago, just like what happens in the US. They'relosing crops, homes, livestock, farms, forests, whole towns. 😔

I planted tomatoes and peppers at the beginning of a week with no rain. Peppers did okay. Tomatoes more or less died. 😿
How do you keep your beds so weed free without a mulch? I weed mine religiously and the next day they look like they've never been weeded. Sigh...
