30 Years on the Mona Lisa!!! I never knew that. I was not taught that in Art History (boring teachers).
I learn a lot from your lectures. Thank you for having them on You Tube.
I also enjoy the "Grand View"!!!

He didn't spend thirty years on the 'Mona Lisa'- it was begun around 1504, Leonardo died in 1519. Do the math-

This is tangential, but a gentleman named Pascal Cotte built a very technical camera and used images from it to reconstruct all the layers in the Mona Lisa. DaVinci actually painted it 4 separate times on the one board. The third layer is the one they thought was meant to be Lisa Gherardini. And as you mentioned, the 4th and final layer is the suspected self-portrait. It's fascinating to think about how he made these modifications over the many years he lugged that painting around. Clearly this was a problem he was driven to solve. Thank you for these videos, Stefan. They are very informative and you have a wonderful mannerism as you teach. ~Erin

I wanted to share that I have been doodling for years during working. I trashed them all. I really received mentally joy and excitement from these then by need to keep them. I totally agree with what you are saying. Now, I am adding color to my world of painting. Thank you

I majored in painting in college and all my art professors had that attitude towards realism, but over time I believed 70% of their attitude was due to the limitations of the people in the classroom and the impracticality of holding everyone to such a high standard. There are places where realism fits in with the contemporary art scene.

    • @robertchilders8698

Realism is much harder to learn! A lot of people are just to lazy! And they quit to early! I believe that a good foundation in realism makes better abstract painting!

Wow! Yes!! I so get your philosophy. I've recently taken up painting again and am trying to find my groove - realism doesn't cut it for me but I couldn't put my finger on what I'm trying to achieve. The human experience of things really resonates with me - not just the reproduction of things as they are. That's what cameras are for!

I really like the fact that you do not show us a simple painting and then tell us how to paint it. You tell us about painting. About how to be the painter we can be not how to imitate you.

Doesn't the painting of ultra realism start with strong draftsmanship - to draw extremely well ? I'm a big fan of William Harnett . The local museum in my hometown has a Harnett - and his ability of drawing then painting is astonishing . I myself have a subject that I would treat as realistic . Not sure that I can pull it off . Perhaps in 30 years ! Thank you for your insights !

The 'Mona Lisa' was begun in about 1504. Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519. He took a long time to paint it, but he didn't work on it for thirty years, as Stefan claims in the video.

Thanks that gives me something to think about. I have always strived for that extreme realism. I have always thought that a printer can do it with just three colors why can't I paint like a printer to not be able to tell the difference between a painting and a photo. Maybe I should rethink a little bit.

    • @StefanBaumann

A person should never make an exact copy of a photo! It's a waste of time! A painting should add or subtract from the photo! - including the colors!

Dear Stefan, I don't think you should get upset with people who leave rude comments. It's usually out of ignorance, or it is out of a delusion that they know better, which amounts to much the same thing. My thought was that there is no reason to compete with photography and instead stick towards what makes painting different from just taking photograph with your phone.
Is that the reason Leonardo only finished around 20 paintings?

Hey Stefan, I enjoy all your videos, especially the Grand View videos. But, I need to take you to task on something from this video. Leonardo did NOT work on the Mona Lisa for thirty years. He worked on it for about sixteen years and the only reason he stopped was because he died. He started the painting of La Giaconda sometime around 1503-4 and he died in 1519. Other than that I appreciated your explanations of how the classical artists did such realistic paintings.

    • @StefanBaumann
      @StefanBaumann  Před 8 lety +1

+Dave Casey (dgcasey) Since the painting was never delivered to the person that commissioned it we really don't know how long he worked on it. it was in his studio when he died. that's not the point. I'm here to give observation and inspirations to artist , I will leave the dates and times for you to check on.
