I'm only really comfortable with hugs that I initiate.
I've had 2 practically strangers in my life hug me and I froze completely. One was just unexpected (I think it was part of a dare or something). the other was a manager at a place I was volunteering at. I was having issues with her and to start over she gave me a hug and I wanted to say no but I couldn't choke it out and basically remained frozen and I was given the most uncomfortable and scary hug of my life... she wasn't scary. • @jp9707

I think some people see it as 'charisma'. Maybe they're all aspiring to behave the same way, but haven't got the language down yet, so they look up to this person's 'confidence'. Then if you say "doesn't that person seem a bit fake to you?", everybody glares at you and thinks you're just jealous because that other person is so much better at people skills than you. So your only option when other people praise this individual is to agree and say "yes, they're so friendly and charasmatic!", just so you don't come across as bitter. Sigh.

Roger Froger Let's not call people pathetic. They are just trying to fit in. Although I agree with you. In social situations there have been instances where I've met a few people who, like me, don't mind being silent for a while or just observe the game, or whatever we were doing but feel the social pressure to keep talking and to keep socializing (I can almost see it weigh on them, and on me quite often). It's just weird, dealing with people.

I just try to get them to relax and be themselves. They only do it because they think they have to because nobody will ever accept them so when they realise they don't have to try so hard then hopefully they'll stop. They're victims of isolation just doing their best to be valuable to you so just show them how. Doesn't always work but it's worth a try.
