    Uh, Dave, I'm no Jeep expert but if the doors were off wouldn't the windows be gone, as well? I can understand putting the controls for the windows and mirrors in the center stack but I assume it's to make the doors lighter and easier to remove.

    Looking back at a vid you've posted a while back, this really shows that you've come a very long way to become the CZcamsr you are today. Great job on your accomplishments Dave!!!

    I always laugh when people mention the window controls in the centre dash as an engineering consideration for taking the doors off... EXCEPT.... if you took the doors off the windows would come with them, so there is no advantage to putting it in there or the centre console vs on the door other than if for some bizarre reason you took the two front doors off, but left the two rear doors on in a JKU which is unlikely and a little strange. The mirror control on the other hand does make sense as you can mount them on the pillars once thedoors are off, although most people don't bother with the nuisance of unplugging them and re-routing them again each time, and instead just pop $10 angled mirrors on the pillars (or like me add the pillars and little mirrors on the vents too).... but at least the mirror controls have a raison-d'etre.
    This seems parroted by so many reviewers so I'm assuming it's provided to them by someone or they just copy each other once someone said it after searching for the switches.

      The reason whey the controls are not on the door is that the driver side control would have wires for every window in the jeep instead of just the two for its window. Basically by locating the controls in the center the number of wires needed in the driver side door is reduce from 14 to 4. That makes the wire loom simpler mechanically which is handy.

    • @KnightShadey
      @KnightShadey Před 9 lety

      swaustex While that is definitely a more valid point than most, even that is not a considerably large harness and would easily fit inside the existing loom that currently incorporates the mirror controls and heating wires along with the window controls. Just look at the harnesses in a Patriot etc, and they are still rather small in diameter. Those mirror heaters need larger wires than the window motors (which could share a ground [though that would mean only 1 window at a time]), and removing the and their wires perhaps would avoided the heated mirror wiring recall/fix.
      Also the number of wires could easily be greatly reduced by simply having them controlled via the CANBUS system. So really it's not a feat of engineering, it's still more of a lowest common denominator , possibly for reliability through simplicity, rather than any special technical consideration.
      To which a far better wiring and engineering consideration, to me, would've been to mount the mirrors independent of the doors which would free up additional wiring/space, and also make it easier to remove the doors without worrying about purchasing additional mirrors for driving with the doors off (even if it's just stick-ons for the vents).
      I have no issue with the placement of the window switches, I'm a veteran user, so to me they are natural and easier for both driver/front pass to control than typical layouts, and similar to my second vehicle in HS a 325iX which had them located near the shifter knob.
      However, it still makes me laugh when reviewers spend more time on the window switch placement than on truly practical and defining features, mainly because it confounded them for a few minutes, and thus they felt it worthy of mention in a review.

      If they had all 4 on the driver's door like most cars do, if you were to take off the driver and passenger door while leaving the back doors on such as what people do with little kids, the driver would have no control over the back windows.

    Gas mileage mentioned here is deceiving.He said 18mpg city.21 hwy.
    That is the short sport model on summer tires and no head-wind.
    This long wheelbase Rubicon,with the heavy axles,and m/s offroad tires,would make for much lower gas mileage.Offroad,in 4x4 high,slippery condiions,would be lucky to get 12mpg.;and in Low range 4x4,deep snow,10-8 mpg.

    I still don't get why the window and mirror controls aren't on the doors. If they come off.....you can't open the windows or adjust mirror, so what's the point of even having those controls not on the door?

      Real jeeps don't have power mirrors and windows, nor do they have 4 doors. Don't worry, this is a knock off. lol In all seriousness, think of the weight that could add to removing the door. They already weight about 40 lbs a piece. Ounces make pounds.

    • @Ampwich
      @Ampwich Před 9 lety

      Crw5555 Real Jeeps? Jeep is the company. Idk why people keep talking as if it's a class.....suv is the class people...

    • @Crw5555
      @Crw5555 Před 9 lety

      You took that way more literally than I intended, buddy.
      It was a joke: Jeep is the company, but in my opinion, the only vehicle they (or anyone else could) make worth driving is the Wrangler. And not long ago, you could only get a wrangler with 2 doors. A lot of 4 door owners are called soccer moms, minivans etc just as a way friendly jab for the extra room/doors/space. Once/if you buy a Jeep (Wrangler) you'll see more of it.
      Also, back in the day, Jeeps were very primitive and basic. Crank windows, manual locks and transmission. I only look at buying Jeeps that have that "rough" feel to them. A lot of my wheeling buddies have unlimiteds with power everything, navigation and such. But it just isn't for me.

    If it cost $30,000 it would be the best 4x4 vehicle on the market.

      Even better, the well appointed Willys Wheeler is under $30K, it's most of the way to the Rubicon reviewed here but with Dana-30 front / Dana-44 back though.
      I got my 2012 4dr Unlimited Rubicon similar to the one above (but in Dozer) for $34K after rebates (and before trade-in value was deducted)... and it IS the best 4x4 vehicle on the market.
